- Could the Lexus LX470 /100 Series Toyota Land Cruiser possibly be one of the greatest vehicles ever made for those seeking adventure? Or, did Toyota / Lexus ruin the Land Cruiser by taking it into the luxury segment?
In this video, I offer my full thoughts & provide a thorough long-term review of my own personal 2000 Lexus LX470, which I have owned for the past 3 years and 30,000 miles.

As a 2000 LX owner as well... This is really well put. A sophisticated tank 🙂 The trade off for poor fuel economy is that you just cant justify spending 40k-80k to replace it. I mean a new Wagoneer is not much better at the pump, so you just think of it as a slight fuel tax for a SUV that could seat 7 in a pinch. I find it to be pretty friendly to work on, parts are available and straight forward to replace bits along the way, something that I did not experience with previous German cars we have owned. I replaced the head unit with a Pioneer Nav/wireless Apple CarPlay unit that makes it feel 15 years younger. Other than that, we have a mechanic that we trust, maintenance costs are reasonable, and keeps us feeling confident in our old rig. I am happy in the 100 series Land Cruiser ownership, low depreciation and look forward to future adventures.
The 76 is the best offroad suv of all time. The Lx and gx are the best SUVs sold in America.

@@WheretoNextOverland They're as good as you build it. You have to decide if you want an rock climber or highway cruiser/offroader with any build or brand. My GX is built to be good at everything, and great at nothing.

I bought an lx 470 brand new in 2002. I’m still driving it as my main transportation. Never owned a vehicle this long. Has 214,000 miles on it. I have pulled trees over , pulled a ton and half of stone on my trailer with it and towed my motorcycle all over the country. Other than basic maintenance, tires , batteries, brakes, and timing belt change every 90,000 miles , the biggest repair I had to do was a power steering pump. As the man said , this is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I’m 76 years old and when I go I’ll leave it to someone I really care about to keep it going.
That's amazing that you bought it new and still own it! At 214k miles, it's barely broken in 😆
My parents bought the one I own now back in 2002 as well. It’s my daily driver and it’s almost at 210,000. Same story no major issues other than the AHC going out about 10 years ago… replaced it and still working to this day.
I'm almost certain if people actually loved their cars like you do, they'd last long. glad to hear it's out there still kickin!

"It is a Toyota Land Cruiser." The LX does have better leather and more sound deadening insulation. We added some window tint to the front DS and PS windows to reduce the greenhouse thermals and my A/C unit loves me for it. Our Jeep buddies are still rubbing their eyes after seeing our '05 LX go where they advised was a "Jeep Only" set of trails...on the same outing their wives couldn't believe my wife feel asleep for a couple hours while they reported of neck and back pain from being thrown around in their Wranglers... ; )
Haha. Yeah, that's one of the things I love about the LX. To those who don't know, they assume it's just another run of the mill "soccer mom" SUV. Always funny to see the look on their face after it just trundles up some gnarly terrain without breaking a sweat!
Purchased a 1999 LX470 new. It now has 340K miles and continues to be my daily driver. I do all maintenance myself, and I have never had any major engine mechanical problems. If you use Toyota/Lexus OEM parts you won’t have to repeat maintenance for a long time. Major items replaced were the starter and radiator at 275K miles, and the rack and pinion and power steering pump at 325K miles. Oil changes every 5K miles and still has good compression with no oil burning. Gas mileage remains the same as the day I purchased it - horrible!
300K on my 2001 LC. Bought a 2000 for my college aged daughter. I Ford F150 broadsided her when running light, driver's side. The LC gave up its life for hers. She came through unscathed. Love them!
We have a 2006 LX 470 with 251000 miles, and we absolutely love this vehicle! When driving it I feel supremely confident in it’s ability to handle the task of getting us fro point A to point B and do so comfortably! Thank you for your video !

Bought my 2006 LX470 in 2007 with 3k kms on it. Now it has 490k kms and has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. 2" Ironman lift, SCS F5 wheels, and headers with full exhaust is all I've done. I loved my 80 series but this thing is so much better to live with, especially climbing hills at altitude.
Since you mentioned wind noise, that's thanks to several extra pieces of weather strip around the doors. One guy tested noise levels after adding them to his Land Cruiser and found over 10db of improvement at highway speeds. Then the LX470 has extra sound insulation, thicker windshield and laminated windows.

It's amazing how Toyota still makes the LC today. What an icon! The best vehicle ever built IMO. I remember when we were in the Middle East, lifted Landcruisers outfitted with heavy ARB bumpers are what they use to haul and deliver our laundry. I told myself we overland with this vehicle and here you use it for peasant work! 😂
Right?! Here in the US, it's considered a luxury vehicle ... but elsewhere in the world it is the ultimate workhorse.
I’ve owned my 06 GX470 since 2008. These vehicles are unbelievably well built. They are also fairly easy to work on as well.

Welcome to that sweet LX life! As for the maintenance, mostly it's just a product of owning a 23 year old vehicle with over a quarter million miles. It's insanely well built ... but at that age and mileage, random things just wear out

The Hawk LTS brake pads combined with a quality brake fluid such as Motul RBF-600 will definitely help the braking performance. Honestly with those two simple things alone I believe you’d be satisfied with braking performance. Maybe something to consider next time you do pads. Good luck with the LX470! Mine has been great so far!

Agree on every point as I too own a 2000 LC with 186k miles as of 6/11/24. I just love it.
I don’t love fueling it though and I wish they would have come with larger tanks for long distance driving.
They're such awesome trucks! And yeah, it's weird to think that with a 24 gallon tank, I struggle to get 300 miles of range haha.
absolutely love them had a 99 it when from a street princess to a off roader to system show truck and on transport i lost it going down a big hill of ice one day ill get another one

Sure, I'll engage. I have 386k miles on my 2002 LC which I still daily drive and have had for 12 years,. I added front and rear lockers, 2" lift, sliders, bumper, roof rack, armor, upgraded the tech etc. We literally call it our "adventure machine". It's perfect for family adventures/camping/overlanding. So much so that I plan to drive it another 10 years. There just is no reason to replace it.

I bought a 2006 LX a few months ago, it is an excellent rig. I agree the adjustable shock dampening work great, I don’t know if Lexus updated the brakes since the 2003 facelift but my 06 has excellent brakes.

I have an 06 also, complete with “night vision”. Everything still works. Just replaced the timing belt after 212,000 miles. I love my truck.

It works well in certain circumstances. If you’re on a rural road at night, you will see deer (for me it’s elk and bison) and other animals if they’re standing on the road way before you otherwise would. But it doesn’t work as well in rain/snow or fog.
@@charlesschroeter753I totally agree. Pretty awesome technology for something 17 yrs old. My father lives in the mtns and there are a ton of deer up there. Running the night vision is great up there.
I miss my 2006 LX470! My dog misses it too -- the large greenhouse meant tall windows and she could see out and that made her less nervous. I'm in a 2020 4Runner TRD ORP now -- great car, just very different -- and my dog doesn't like it quite as much.
Our dog loooooved the LX! Agree about the large greenhouse .... plus I LOVE that the windows in the backseat go all the way down (a rarity these days)

They're amazing vehicles, but in the UK the petrol costs £1.47 a litre now !

I would agree, the no squeaks or rattle surprised me the most about this 20+ year old suv. My new pilot has interior rattles and the build quality was not what i expected from a new car.

I own a 2002 lx470 with 210k. My parents bought it new and I bought it from them a few years ago. The AHC went out on it about 10 years ago but was fixed and has been working since…I heard from a Lexus tech that shops were filling the AHC hydraulic fluid tank with windshield washer fluid! It makes sense that that could happen and I know ammonia would ruin any seals in the system.
Ouch! Windshield washer fluid?? Wouldn't put it past 'em. Yikes.
I own exact the same model (2002), same color. 180k miles. Imported from US, as this model was never sold in Europe. It runs on LPG so quite economic with €0,73 per liter (sort of). I transformed it into a overlanding truck. Rear locker, steel front/rear bumper, winch, roof rack with RTT, 35inch BFG AT, replaced AAC with Coils with Koni shocks (was still functioning), 2 inch lift. I removed the third row to maximize storage space and reduce weight. It a surprisingly good overlanding truck. In fact, it's the best truck I ever had and I will never sell it. They have to pull the keys from my cold, dead hands.....:) Get a lot of thumbs up during the week from people who love this truck also. PS this truck also has a much thicker paint and better insulation. Did you know the engine was originally engineered as an aircraft engine, which may explain the insanely reliability and durability?

How did you do the conversion to LPG?
Its done by a certified LPG fitter. Not a DIY job as its not allowed in my country.

Your description of the interior and the balance of old and new was perfect. I briefly owned an ‘03 Land Cruiser, wife didn’t like it so we got rid of it (she has Sequoia now which she loves). It was a tank, I fell in love with it. I’ll get one of these 98-02 so I don’t have to deal with the awful touch screen, to replace my ‘98 LS400. 3 kids and 2 dogs in an LS400 is a challenge…
If you are going to own a 20 year old vehicle like this you must be willing to DIY the maintenance and repairs. These vehicles are surprisingly simple for the most part, and all the info is out there. A FWD V6 crossover is a nightmare compared to working on a V8 Toyota.

I'm definitely a Toyota/Lexus fan. I own a 200 series(looking to trade up to a 300 OR 250 Prado). 300 on back order, so to speak and ordering a 250 Prado tomorrow.
Have owned a 120 Prado(3.0L Turbo Diesel) and a LT2000 Celica. After doing about 600,000 Km between them I have never had a breakdown, rattle, squeak or component failure. They just keep going and going. They don't have the most power. My cruiser with a twin Turbo 4.5L Diesel only has 200Kw. But it gets me everywhere I have wanted to go, with ease.

I used to drive a Landrover Rangerover and the air suspension was always acting up. I had to ride it rough to the shop too regular. Love my 4unner looking at a 2000 LX now :)

I have a 99 lc100 with rear locker and it seems unstoppable. It has 310,000 miles and runs flawlessly.

i have 2006 lx love it this is my second one first one got wreck
From many years of 80 series and 100 series LX mileage experience....the braking system in a 100 series is very good. What makes it seem a bit longer to stop is due to the heavier tires and wheels. One of my 2000 LXs has 33' tires with heavier steel Tundra wheels and even then the braking is excellent.
Also, unlike the Land Cruiser, the LX has a sound dampening system that really makes for a quieter cabin.
Too be fair to the 100, it stops. But having grown accustomed to smaller, nimbler vehicles ... the braking distance does take some getting used to. It's just a lot of mass to slow down...

Once upon a time the LX’s also seemed to be substantially cheaper that the LC used. I think the word has gotten out and that is over.
In the middle east the 100 series also had the 4.5L inline 6 from the LC80 and the LX450

Glad you brought up upkeep costs for the hundred series. I have owned four Land Cruisers, an FJC, and many other Toyota products since the early ‘90’s. I have been overlanding and using my vehicles for that kind of use since than and while I do fully agree that Lsnd Cruiser build quality and durability is unparalleled, any 20+ year old vehicle requires regular maintenance….. all the rubber bits like belts hoses, seals… it doesn’t matter what make, any vehicle will suffer from reliability issues if not kept on top of. Even the most durable vehicle in earth is only as reliable as the upkeep it has had. Furthermore parts on Land Cruisers are really pricey so someone going into a purchase of a 20+ year old Land Cruiser needs to go in eyes wide open. If you aren’t doing your own service budget in baselining it and have peace of mind. It’s always preferable to pay s premium for a nice example that was owned by an enthusiast or owner with a detailed service history. Mileage is less of an issue than upkeep, buying one that has been religiously maintained will save you potentially a ton of money even if you pay more up front. I ran a Discovery I fir a couple of seasons and it performed flawlessly despite having Provo the worst reputation out there. I had an 80 series that I used hard and neglected birfiekd service and did a lot of water crossings in and had a bunch of reliability problems with due to that (totally my fault of course) so I guess, go in eyes wide open. They are only as good as they have been kept up at high mileage. The 100 series is a sweet spot right now, fully depreciated, they made a ton of them, and they represent a great value. I miss ours and kind of want to find another.

'98 and '99 100 series you could option a rear locker...the LSD were on one's that didn't have it
True for the Land Cruisers. But in the US, I don't believe rear locker was an option on the LX? Although I've heard it was in Canada?
Point ON - 100% - I have a 2000 LX470 - 245K miles, and it looks and rides like the day I purchased it. EXCELLENT SUV- I get offers to purchase my LX all the time. Everything you said is on point.
You fit in a Miata 😮 recently upgraded my V6 4runner SE 4th gen to a V8 SE w/ 159k, power delivery is a lot smoother; MPG is at 11/14 city/hwy w/ 285s. Installed a Gibson exhaust but it’s too mild to appreciate the V8, looking it upgrading to a carven R or flowmaster super 44 soon.
Fit probably isn't the word I would use, but I'm able to cram myself into it 😆
I've thought about an exhaust to wake up the (silent) V8. A little more noise wouldn't hurt.

I will say, If you want to keep your AHC and increase payload ... your best bet is probably to install a pair of King Springs in the back. That's what we did and it allows the AHC to function normally even with a 200lb drawer system in the back
The 80 series land cruiser (lx450) is talked about a lot lately and the number of decked out 80s is increasing on the public trails. I love the Ifs 100 series way better. Having owed both as well as several others I can tell you the comfort level is way better. The v8 is a huge upgrade from the 80 series as well. For those of you who need the solid axle, the 105 sold overseas is the exact same vehicle with a solid axle. With a little effort you can change to the solid axle. Also, I agree with the split tailgate comment. No other setup will do.
The 80 is the Land Cruiser I lust after ..... but the 100 is probably the one I'd rather own for how we use it

I found ours on Craigslist in California. When I was looking (back in 2019) there seemed to be a much greater supply of LX470s in California than there were here in Seattle. So, i found one at a used car dealership through Craigslist that had a solid service history, spoke with them a bit and then flew down the next day to test drive it. Ended up buying it and driving it home that day!

I'm from WA aswell, I wanted to get a lx570 but ended up getting a 2014 sequoia platinum (wanted the lexus luxury)
but I have a 99 gs400 and never understood why the 4.7l 2uzfe made so little power compared to the 4.0l 1uzfe
espically at the time like in your video while the gs400 was making 300hp the lx470 was only putting down 230hp until 2005/06 while the gs400 was cruising with it since 1998

Only a 600rpm difference in the powerband though 0.7l larger
Just always puzzled me why they went that route, only thing I can put it to is reliability due to lower rpms and better off-roading but they could've had more power but chose not to
That's a very good question! There's no doubt that 2uzfe it is an EXTREMELY under-taxed V8. Perhaps Toyota wanted to make extra sure they'd last forever given the use-case? Off-roading, ability to run on crap gas, durability for towing? Just guessing though...

Thinking about buying a 1999 one built for overlanding shocks, snorkel, etc. 262k miles for $7,500 but it’s got bad O2 sensors so going to try to talk him down to about $6,500. What do you think?
The price seems reasonable/ good, but it depends on how much of a basket case it is. Biggest things I'd be looking for would be rust underneath and if there is a good history of service records
Do you ever wish you picked up a newer model LX470 or has the 230hp 4 speed transmission been okay?
I would say that it has been just OK. Not great, but not so bad that I wouldn't buy another 100 with a 4 speed.
She ain't quick ... but still happy to cruise at 80 on the freeway. Biggest gripe with the 4 speed is that it gear hunts at higher speeds going up hilld... especially when cruise control is on.
But I've also not driven a 5 speed to feel how much of an improvement it might be.
Still, it's not like an 80 that struggles on the freeway

@@AMRAP keep in mind that 2000 was the first year that got ATRAC ... which is definitely beneficial offroad. Unless of course the 99 you're looking at is a LC with a rear locker
Pretty impressive that the air system is original. It has been fixed though right? Not very many of those made it over 200,000 miles without those things being rebuilt, or replaced.
It hasn't been rebuilt. I believe at one point the previous owner replaced the front struts due to minor leakage....but the thing is, they probably didn't need to be replaced. AHC is honestly very reliable but ONLY IF you know how to take care of it. Most dealers and independent shops either don't know how or refuse to do so (which is annoying) ... so they just say it's "bad and needs to be replaced".
The only thing I've needed to add are heavier (King) rear springs to help support the extra payload of a 200lb drawer system in the back + our loaded up truck.
As long as neutral pressures are adjusted periodically to keep them in spec, the system can last a long time. I'm hoping it keeps on going, because I honestly LOVE AHC. It's an incredible system.
It is not an air system. That probably has a role why it is so reliable. That being said many people ( myself included) changed it. In my case I did not even try to fix a minor issue with it as I put reliability over comfort. Probably not the wisest decision in retrospect , but the OME has been really reliable and good when loaded up.
Can you tell me about wheels and tyres specs? Any rubbing?
Tires are BFG K02 285/75/16. They did not run when I had the stock wheels. They did rub a bit once I put on the wheels (SCS F5). Had to do some trimming of fender liner. They still rub occasionally on the top of the fender when hitting a big bump. Not bad though. It's the offset that causes it

Fact that this came out 5min ago and I been trying to decide between a Sequoia or LC100/LX470 is a sign. My wallet says gen 1 Sequoia but my soul says LC/LX.
The LC / LX are just SO damn good. Sequoias are a great budget choice though, IMO. Tough decision!
LX/LC is definitely next level compared to most anything new and certainly much better than any other 10+ year old vehicle. They wear very well. I have four LXs with over 250k miles to prove it.

@@jjuarez83 Currently four 100 series and one 80 series LX. Four are family daily drivers and one, '06 LX, is more used for our overlanding trips. I had another 100 series LC that I just sold recently with 470k miles. Thanks but no plans to sell any now.
I'm curious ... if you could only have one, would you choose an 80 or a 100? I LOVE the idea of owning an 80 ... it's peak Land Cruiser in my mind ... but I wonder if I would miss the extra power / comfort of a 100 (I suspect I would)
I just sold my 2000 LX470 with 365,000 miles on it. It was my everyday driver. I replaced the whole AC system ( I live in TX) so it was used year-round but no other major repair issues. I did the scheduled maintenance as per Lexus's suggestions as well as replaced the timing belt and water pump at every 100,000 intervals. I have 2010 LX570 with 180,000 miles on it with more creature comforts and I wish I had my LX 470 back. It was been the best car I have owned and I have owned and I have had other high-end cars. My son just got a 2001 LX470 and he loves it.
Wow, 365K miles and still going strong! I'm curious, what was it about your 100 series that you liked more than your 200 (if anything?).
It was a tank, it was durable, lower cost of ownership. not as much electronics, the 570 seems to have a computer for everything. The 570 I have replaced the radiator, alternator, transmission issues and now the accumulators need to be replaced.
@@WheretoNextOverland Another thing I like about the 100 series is the ease of removing the third road setting. In the 200 series, although you can remove it it is not made to be removed.

100 series are not all powered by a v8. They’re powered by two different inline 6s. One is the 1fzfe and the other is the 1hdfte

I believe the 98 & 99 LX470's did have a limited slip in the rear. Don't quote me on that but I'm about 90% sure that was the case (in US spec anyway)

Oh man, tough call. The GX is a great platform as well! Obviously they have their differences, but I think more than anything, the little bit of extra space in the LX was the biggest factor for us (we pack a lot of crap on our trips haha)

Good question! With the 33" tires I've got, I haven't felt the need to re-gear, the truck seems to handle the added size / weight just fine. I suspect that going up to 35's might be a different story though...

Honestly, it's hard to argue against the 80. If I were to try, I'd say that the thing the 100 does substantially better is eat up miles on the highway .... which is important when the trails you wanna explore are multiple states away.
IMO, the 80 IS 'peak Landcruiser' though. I'd love a 3x locked 80 series!
I'd have to give it to the 100 for "creature comfort" but I wouldn't hesitate if I had to take my 80 over several k' miles which I've done and "Unk", (that's my 80 series name) 😁hasn't let me down even w/ aprox. 355K on his clock!💯

10K for a well maintained (with documents) LX seems like a pretty good deal. As long as it doesn't have rust issues. Rust is the real killer of these things

@@WheretoNextOverland damn that’s a tough one, they’re both keepers for sure. I would do anything to make sure I can keep both because they are both very practical, comfortable, reliable and capable and both have been a pleasure to own, the 570 has more refinement and power but the 470 has this rugged rawness to it. Both similar but different enough. Honestly I can’t choose which to not keep, but I know that I would keep those two over any other truck, period.
If you can get the 200 you won’t regret it, but my advise is get the 200 if you can keep the 100 as well

Well, if we're talking about real, serious wheeling in trails rated as 'difficult', a Wrangler Rubicon or Sasquatched Bronco are in an entirely different league. Lockers, superior angles, better articulation, more ground clearance, much more protection from the factory ... the list goes on.
Sure, you can build a 100 up to do those trails, but you're talking about a LOT of mods and money to get a 100 to the same level as a stock Bronco or Wrangler.
Of course .... a Land Cruiser is superior just about everywhere else (like build quality and getting to and from the trails) ... but if we're talking strictly off-road prowess, it's not really the king of the hill.

nope, not all hundys have this engine. Outside the US most have the 4.2 ltr intercooler, turbo-charged diesel engine. tge 105 as the same diesel engine wzhout turbo.
