I know you had to suppress the music for copyright reasons, but it's amazing (and instructive) to see how much of the magic of these scenes is lost when Howard Shore's score is not there! Great reactions btw.

Loving your reactions to these movies!
Frodo left the company before Gandalf returned. He doesn't know Gandalf isn't dead or that Boromir is. Thank goodness for the extended version. The scenes of Boromir in the past with his brother and father that are essential for understanding are not included in the theatrical release.
Gandalf is a supernatural being; a servant of the demi-gods who serve the one god, Eru. He can never 'die' as in permanent death. His body is only like a garment to cover his spirit. His spirit returned to the land of the demi-gods where he was clothed in a more brilliant form and given higher power. He is still Gandalf, or Olorin, his 'real' name among the beings of Valinor, his home.
His mission against Sauron is not to use supernatural abilities, but to encourage and support humans in their quest to overcome evil. He uses light as a weapon and that only in dire circumstances.
The books are amazing, but bring up so many hints of ages past that I became desperately curious to know what those stories were. The Silmarillion tells that history. It's a difficult book that must be read more than once or twice to be absorbed, but is absolutely worth it.

These movies are masterpieces, yet somehow the books are better (in my opinion). They were written to be one big book, simply titled The Lord of the Rings, but Tolkien ended up splitting it into three novels, which themselves are divided by smaller books. The descriptions of the land are vast and atmospheric. A lot of people get overwhelmed by them, but honestly if you surrender to the ride and fully immerse yourself in them it makes for such a rich experience. And it all serves the overarching themes of the books and the world.
Just be prepared for them to be *very* different. These movies are by far the best adaptations we've gotten, but they are adaptations of lengthy and lushly-written books, and so the filmmakers had to cut a lot, even in the Extended Editions.

The Numenorians were a race of superman. They were descended from a union of men and elf, which is why they had long life and superhuman abilities. But their kingdom sank below the sea, and they arrived in Middle Earth thousands of years ago, founding the Kingdom of Gondor and Arnor. Many of the noble families in Gondor still have the blood of Numenor in them, making them above other men. Faramir, Boromir and their father both have Numenorian blood as well (Although not as pure as Aragorn's).
Arnor was overrun by the Witch King centuries ago. Aragorn is descended from the lines of both Anarion, the King of Arnor, and Isildur, the King of Gondor, on different sides of his family. So he's the rightful King of both realms (remember the two big statues in the first movie? Those were Isildur and Anarion; the brothers who were Kings of the twin kingdoms).
Yes, this is the same Gandalf. Or at least the same entity wearing that name and face (Gandalf isn't his real name, and he isn't really an old man). Although his personality is a little different; he's more powerful and has renewed purpose.

The Ring is slowly taking our good little Frodo with its evil power, that is why Frodo loses it more and more and that is why Sam is so important. Without Sam by his side, Frodo wouldn't go far. And that is not his fault, he's a good little Hobbit but the Ring of Sauron is just too strong and too evil for anybody to resist long. It was too strong for Isildur, too strong a temptation for Boromir (who was a good man too in spite of everything), even very powerful and wise and good characters like the Elf Galadriel or Gandalf don't dare to take the Ring : they know they could first defeat Sauron with it but in the end they would become great power of evil themselves...

The Undying Lands is a place where the valar, angelic, god-like spirits of immense power and rulers of the Arda (World) reside. Only the Elves are allowed there, due to their immortality. Long ago, after the Arda was created, Morgoth, a rebellious vala rose against the other valar and Eru, the only true God, wanted to become a sole ruler of Arda and all the beings living on it. Morgoth was the most powerful of the valar, and long he had the upper hand in his fight against his peers. The very corruption of Morgoth went to the matter of Arda itself. Elves are made out of the matter of Arda, so their bodies became suspectible to Morgoths corruption. Undying Lands is the only place, where the very presence of the Valar holds that corruption at bay, therefore it is the only place where Elves can avoid the effects of that corruption; had they stayed in Middle Earth, their physical bodies would eventually fade, leaving only their souls wandering aimelessly and without bodies. The Three Elven Rings were partly created to keep that corruption at bay, and hold back the decay of time. Should the One Ring destroyed, those Three would also lose their powers. Should Sauron won, the Elves would not have any other choice than flee Middle Earth. Either way, the outcome of the War of the Ring will be a bittersweet one for the Elves.

Tolkien loved trees all his life, and his work treats the wanton destruction of trees as a serious crime, maybe even a sin. Also, as a young student reading MacBeth for the first time, he was very disappointed when in the end the prophecy about the moving forest is boringly fulfilled by soldiers using branches as camouflage. In a lot of ways, the destruction of Isengard is what he wanted to see from Shakespeare!
