In this weeks Questions and Answers we talk about balance beads vs traditional wheel balancing, what is the status of the GMC T6500 that I want to build into the ultimate towing/overlander rig, why people choose Hydro Assist instead of Vacuum Assist and how to straighten a bent axle housing.

12:26 balance can also change if the bead slips on the wheel. Which is much more common then you think!!! Also- beads help adjust for needing to rebalance as the tires wear down. (Worked for a tire shop for 8 years)

I’ve never heard of beads till today. Is there any reason I can’t use these on a normal car? Like my wife’s car is a Chevy Bolt it’s incredibly sensitive to tire noise and the winter tires tend to have just a bit of imbalance in them at high speeds.
      Thanks

    Manual brakes for the win.
Best feel, works with dead engine and with boost.(turbo or roots) Try running boosted up Pikes Peak, let off, hit the brakes and pray. “Storing” vacuum or hydro boost is temporary. There’s a place for power brakes…. Going to the grocery store…. Hehehe…

Toyota axle straightening (Ford 9 , 8 inch etc.) "Fabricated housings". I would also recommend dropping the center section back in and snugging it up after you have gutted and stripped the housing to help keep it from possibly distorting. Use a "shoe" (Steel saddle) where the bottle jack contacts the housing to spread the load so it doesn't dent or deform the housing. I have a massive I beam for the base of my axle fixture (Straightening, welding, gearing, etc fixture) put a 20 ton jack under a hollow tube and go Magilla and well,,,,,...

I don't recommend balance beads for tires on rigs that air down and up frequently, and certainly not on Jeep JL or JT models. Airing up adds moisture to the inside of the tire and those beads will eventually start to clump, especially with small portable air compressors after a trail ride. JL Wrangler and JT Gladiators are very susceptible to "death wobble" not caused by worn parts, but due to tire balance. I've been bead free for 4k miles on a JT Gladiator w/ 37x13.5 on beadlocks with zero balance in all 4, smooth like butter to 85mph. I air up after wheeling frequently and ran balance beads and developed death wobble in a rig with 9k miles on it, nothing loose, nothing worn....vacuumed out the beads as recommended by my local 4x4 fab shop, and not a problem since. As with Ian, I run beadlocks with no balance on Milestar Patagonias, and they are perfect. If I didn't have beadlock wheels, I would have them balanced with stick on lead weights.

Typical engine vacuum is 7-10 psi (14.7 psi is theoretical max - i.e. 1 atmosphere). For a 12 inch diameter diaphram with a 3 inch diameter hole in the center, this will provide 740-1000 lbs of force. I think that's what you meant.
