- Wow there are some really terrible parts of Alabama, I'll tell you that!
Sweet home Alabama. The state known for its peanuts, college football, and, of course- southern hospitality. While Alabama may sometimes be overlooked, there are many areas in this southern state that are exceptional. And, let’s not forget - at a time when it’s really expensive to buy a home ANYWHERE in America, Alabama’s cheap living is becoming a big selling point these days.
However, if you’re looking for a place to move in Alabama, the places we’ll talk about are not those places. How do we measure a bad place anyways? We look at things like crime, poverty, blight, bad schools and home prices. Plus, we took into account YOUR opinion Alabama! You people have been telling me where the worst and best places are to live in your home state. So, while there’s some southern charm in many places in Alabama, the ones we’re going to talk about are certainly not very…charming.

I am a 28 year life long Anniston Resident and we owe are downfall and contamination to Monsanto!!! They buried hazardous waste in our dirt, dumped tons of chemicals in our creeks till they turned blood red and killed everything in the water and then they had a 700 million dollar settlement with residents in the 2000s. Largest settlement in US history at the time. Sadly most residents didn’t even get over 10K and couldn’t sell their homes. Trapped…..
I like how he just says crime. It's murders, robbery, rape. I have lived in a lot in these towns and Tuscaloosa is getting just as bad. We have gangs but nobody wants to talk about it, constant gun violence involving minors, drive by at the public pool got a 3 yr old baby. It's getting so bad here .

@@taniyiab so is kidnapping , car theft and shoplifting but , if you don't have kids, a car , or own a business you aren't going to worry about living in that area. Random shootouts are worth mentioning because some of the crime is just drugs and that's everywhere but I feel like he should describe the crime.

The crime is so bad here, the only reasons I'm still here is looking after my 96 year old mom and I can't afford to move after she passes. At least they're getting the crime in Gulf Village down. I don't hear gunshots much anymore 🤷♀️
"What's the difference, there all crimes?" Some crimes are much worse and much more harmful than others. There is a big difference between petty 'crime' (stealing candy, or minor vandalism) and Serious "CRIME" (Murder, Rape, Felony assault with a weapon, or mob violence) that leaves someone dead or permanently disabled, or living in permanent pain for the rest of their lives.
I am born and raised in Birmingham. I agree with the points said but the city is progressing. It’s a beautiful place and there’s a lot more to see than what was in the clip.

I live in Birmingham as well and there are beautiful communities here and the city is now thriving with plenty things to do. If it is so bad why would they be having the World Games here??? He needs to dig deeper with his research.
How the HELL did Selma not make this list? I live in Montgomery and I would live in "bad parts" of half of the other cities, before I would even think about living in Selma.

I’m glad we moved from Los Angeles to Madison, Alabama in 1995. It’s a fast growing city with growth which brings ppl from everywhere.
Madison is considered to be part of Huntsville that's where I live and it seems your close to me
@Ray Ban apparently Madison Alabama is not small enough because there is people moving in from west, mid west, north and south. Madison is between Birmingham and Nashville, Tennessee. HBCU colleges Oakwood and A&M Huntville. Military Base Redstone. It’s a lot packed into this small city.

Our Poverty isn't that bad compare to just the City os Los Angeles plus I live here in the Northside of Huntsville where Madison is considered part of Huntsville like Beverly Hills to Los Angeles and it's not the only wealthiest city in the state...Mobile and Huntsville also make that list but Montgomery and Birmingham not so much
@Ray Ban Madison has way over 50k and We have a lot of Entertainment including Flow Altitude Roller Time Parkway Place Mall and Bridge Street and so many more Entertainment like Von Braun Center and Space and Rocket Center, And speaking of Space and Rocket Center it is the Base of the whole space division of NASA around the Country so that's on Big Industries along with ForestWood Farm and so many other industries
And We do have a lot of Food options and diversity at Parkway Place Mall, Snappy Pizza, Marcos Pizza, Snappy Pizza, Mello Mushroom, Village of Providence l, Madison Square and Zacs Kitchen! And of you want some Chinese Food and Japanese Food go to Nori Japan, Panda Express, China Master, or Nothin But Noodles.
And the Crime Rate is Low safe and Fun Fact Huntsville is like a 15 minute drive from their and its the 2nd Biggest City and has the Largest Population in Alabama and President Obama and Trump visited here and Answer me 1 Question which is do u Like in Alabama Madison or Huntsville and if not stop telling me what ik about my Birthplace and Hometown and stop believing what u here from Videos and the Internet and Listen to what Me and Jacqueline Woods( People who live there) Know what they know about Our City and also 😉 Nick Johnson did a great job on the video and I won't respond back and Bye👌

I was stationed in Birmingham for 5 years. Admittedly, I was worried about having to move there. Fast forward 5 years later and it was simply the best place my family and I grew to absolutely love. Heck, we're planning on retiring in AL based entirely on our experience and the real southern hospitality that we received.
I would rather live in any small town in Alabama than a town in California or New York.

Born and raised in hartselle Alabama says the cops being on a I was bullied in school power Trip good little town for the downtown looks like something out of a western perfect place if you want to be bored to death the hospital I was born in in 1970 has been torn down we have no hospital built a new police station just to not use it and pay the county to take the prisoners but we have elementary schools and a high school that are bigger than most colleges makes no damn sense summertime with the humidity is unbearable unless you've been here who am I kidding you can't never get used to it but roll tide

@@tinarobinson6902 there are plenty of other places besides alabama and georgia, there is a whole world out there, full of varied dynamics, economy, weather, etc. go explore and broaden your world, i agree i lived in atlanta too, it sucked, but i have lived all over ; so i have a wide experience; i found i have been most , active, healthy, and happiest in east florida ( jupiter, palm beach gardens, vero beach )

I heard from a native of Alabama that Selma was one of the worst places, but it's not even on the list.
Selma is the highest crime rate. Must have picked it up from a cracker jack box from the 60s.

I grew up in the Anniston/Oxford area,crime and poverty, struggling to get a good paying job are the reasons I left. I live in Baldwin County now, I do not regret my move at all.

I have fond memories of growing up in Selma in the 70’s and 80’s. It is so sad what has become of it now. A lot of political correctness and voting for the same corrupt people and high crime are a lot of the reason.
I moved to AL 3 yrs ago from California. I was happy to hear I don't live in a dump. It's not great but home prices are affordable and there is even water here!

Ohhh my God!!! I'm in Clanton. And let me tell you my family migrated here from Mexico 30 plus years ago and we love it here. Crime rate is low and schools are great. Who cares about movie theaters 30 min away there's a lot of peace here!!!

This town has really worked hard since our former mayor passed due to COVID, and our new mayor is working hard to make improvements and bring more business to our town. We lost four textile mills but have replaced them with Kia Manufacturing and other much higher paying jobs.

Yep, Attalla used to have steel mill that employed alot of blk people. Gadsden had goodyear that employed alot of blk people. Both are gone now. Attalla looks like the slums and Gadsden not far behind.
Prichard is ROUGH. You don't want to end up there even on accident. Accidentally passed through there going from across the bay up to north Texas. It's surreal how awful and blighted it is
I use to work and live in Prichard eight mile area and while at work I had my care broken in to be was held at knife point while I was six months pregnant and he held it to my stomach!

This is completely absurd. My husband, 9 year old son & I just sold our 1 br Brooklyn apartment, where the quality of life couldn’t be much worse, and bought a beautiful home in Anniston. It’s halfway between B’ham & Atlanta. We absolutely love it, and we are glad to have a quieter life than we would in Homewood or Vestavia Hills. Sure, there is a rough part of town, but it’s easy to choose not to go there.
I live in Toney, Alabama which is right next to Madison Alabama. And I LOVE IT! I have 2 acres of land and a beautiful 2000 Sq ft house, 4 beds and 2 baths, 2 car garage, and I'm surrounded by land and forestry. And I only paid 152,000 for my house. And the crime rate is low, because we all own guns and we can open carry legally.
Tuscaloosa should have been on that list too. Crime rates are crazy there, slum lord housing mixed in with high concentrations of overpriced student living buildings, extremely high population of homeless and people with psychiatric problems, the hospitals are terribly overpopulated, underfunded, and overwhelmed. Not to mention the constant construction and massive traffic issues. Especially during football season.
I was born and raised in Bessemer. Finally moved out of there in 2020 because of the crime. Was once a really nice town.

About 10 years ears ago Birmingham raised sales tax to fund a sewer system . It went over 10% so folks just stopped shopping downtown . Major stores moved outside city limits . So the sewer project never got near made and it went bankrupt 🤔 city never paid for work done ☑️
But they insisted they still needed that big sales tax %%%

In PA the enacted the Johnstown Flood tax on booze to raise $ for the area and was to be temporary. The Johnstown Flood was in 1889.

And a host of other Republican funded junk bond dealers and trough feeders, many of whom were indicted, convicted ,and spent time in jail. Also, Bessemer isn’t a suburb. Never has been.
I'll never forget a few years ago Prichard was on the news celebrating one week without a murder, ONE WEEK! However while the news was live out in the street doing the report people started coming out to be on TV and someone got shot 🤣😥
Nick, I've stayed in Birmingham twice, near the 5-Points area on the southside. Really enjoyed myself and no crime problems ... though I was mostly parked across from a police station! Really enjoyed the city though.
I was born in Anniston and live right on the outskirts now. Anniston is definitely not the dump this video portrays. $100K will definitely not buy you the biggest house on the market (unfortunately). While there is crime, there are also great things. Our children do graduate and become productive citizens. I am a proud graduate of Anniston High School with a Master’s degree. My cousin just graduated from college last week. My niece is enrolled in college right now. These videos and think pieces often deter growth. That’s why we have a Community Garden. I was born in Montgomery in 1943. Dad was Army Air Force @ Maxwell and he stayed in the service after the war. My Mom's parents lived there and I loved to visit them. Last time there was back in the late 1960's when Montgomery was still a pleasant, sleepy state capitol Sad that it has declined so m8uch.
I'm currently studying the Birmingham area looking for historic buildings connected with Great Depression era New Deal projects and the large number of abandoned houses you see on Google street view is depressing in addition to the general decay. Historically, the woolen and textile mills that used to be in New England all shut down for non union states in the south.

I live in one of those cities that you mentioned. I live in Atmore, and my aunt is the council woman. She wasn’t happy with this. I subscribe to you and like your content on the most part. This is a reality punch in the gut for our town. But t to be honest. Atmore has a lot of good things going on as well which is helping us make steps in the right direction.

No matter the city the county or state EVERY state has bad areas so trash talking only certain places is dumb .
Me and my family visit Birmingham a lot, we love it it’s so fun! We visit my moms side of the family there, and they love it. Yes there are Burglars. But most of them don’t come near the house. But I love Birmingham it’s amazing!
I understand that this is some people’s view of this city, but coming from a point of view from someone who lives in the Bessemer area. You only showed the south side of Bessemer which alone now has a brand new recreation center and walking trails. Bessemer is also home to several major companies which provided jobs for this area like Amazon dollar general Carvana Home Depot Milo’s f Fed Ex and Publix.

Right he should not be speaking on things he know little about. The bad part is inglenook not Tarrant. Tarrant has a history that made it the way it is. But he doesn't live here and cannot articulate how it became like that. Got to love how he speaks with such confidence.
Jobs like amazon and fed ex aren't what you call stable jobs and places like dollar general suck ( they are easily robbed because the employer doesn't care!) Besides that more GOOD job opportunity are needed.

Hello Nick , the Birmingham area , including all surrounding towns died when the steel mills and supporting industries dried up , now very little going on .
Montgomery , I live here , It's not for happy go lucky faint hearted people , it's ruff , tuff , and socially unacceptable , back in the 70's and early 80's it was nice , but has since declined through handouts and politics , same as Birmingham , until people in charge are held accountable for their actions , it will continue to decline into nothingness .
Same for Atalla, Gadsden area of N Alabama. They used to have a steel mill that employed alot of hard working blk folks and now its gone. Gadsden had goodyear and now its gone too.
I lived in Vestavia Hills 5 years now but I’m familiar with Anniston, Talladega, Birmingham, and all the Birmingham suburbs. I’d say that you were spot on with everything except Birmingham. Birmingham has a lot of great things going on even though it is affected by its poverty stricken areas the main body of the city has several sports arena’s great nightlife flourishing businesses and a population that participates in all of it. As far as good places if you mention Vestavia Hills I’d also mention Helena, Pelham, and most Hoover. Also if you show up to Alabama with $200,000 or less looking for a house you’re definitely going to be getting gunshots every night. If you want to buy a nice house in a decent part of Alabama you’re going to need 250 to 350K that’ll pretty much get you any three bedroom two car garage that you’re looking for.
I don't know exactly how long you've lived in Alabama, but I'm from BESSEMER and I know for a FACT that there are plenty of places in BESSEMER ALONE that you can live VERY, VERY NICE for UNDER 200K & not hear a gunshot unless it's New Years or the 4th of July. Mabey you're not familiar with BESSEMER or certain other cities for that matter, but I was born & raised there (45 now) and there are PLENTY of nice neighborhoods & houses for under 200k. Right now I live in the Clay-Chalkville area and my neighborhood is VERY nice and I don't hear gunshots often. The house that I live in is an older house that was built in the late 60's but that's what I was looking for because it's just something about the foundations & pipes and overall construction that was just much better back then. And my house is all brick, right at 3000 square feet and has one of the biggest & nicest yards you've seen......in that area. And I paid well under 200k🤷🏽♀️

i am from alabaster and went to school in helena they are some of the best places but yes the house situation if you wanna be in alabaster, helena, vestavia hills, mountain brook, hoover, etc. your looking at 250-350k we live in clanton now and we got a 4 bd 2 1/2 bath with 2 acres and a pool for 205k
@@drekafine8831 i’ve lived in Alabama since 1995. But I’ve also done a lot of traveling and lived in some other countries. You’re right I don’t know anything about Bessemer I like to live close to everything in Bessemer is more on the outskirts plus the school systems out there have terrible ratings just like metro Birmingham school systems greatly affect where I live because I have a child. You can find nice houses in any part of the city, but there are certain areas I don’t want to live in because of the education system. Nothing wrong with the area, nothing wrong with the people, Nothing wrong with any of that. That’s just how I choose where I live with my family.

LIME Decease every where in most areas is very high. Many don't survive it and pain suffering is horrible. Christians move in the areas expecting the God to take care witch is a horrible lie. Family's stay away feeling upset about thier loved onse who trusted wrong. most visiters don't go back even the family loved ones stay away witch is very horrible being poor as the suckers of the God they believe.

I had a feeling Huntsville would not be on this list and I was right. I have never been to Alabama but heard nice things about Huntsville, that it is a booming city with relatively low crime. I would like to visit.
Huntsville is great, but I worry about the future growing pains. If it ever turns blue, it's doomed.

Great video! I have to say there are some awesome people and places in Alabama. It has its small towns with their own troubles but overall some of the most generous and hospitable people live there! Top places are Huntsville and Baldwin County for sure. Huntsville has so many job opps but needs more stuff to do. But as for Deep South AL, The beaches in Gulf Shores/Orange beach are so clean and well maintained. Has plenty of solid restaurants! No wonder a lot of people retire there. Fairhope is a diamond in the rough. Very cute and peaceful spot to vacation. And the whole eastern shore on Mobile bay is booming right now. I love that it’s growing. Hopefully more companies come and open up job opportunities.
Orange Beach is one of my favorite places in the US. I've been looking to buy a second house in orange beach. Would be much easier to go deep sea fishing on the weekends with a place to stay!

I lived In Mobile and I am surprised that city didnt make it. Along with Bay Minette. Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are now eye sores since Hurricane Ivan hit the area and the cities handed out building permits like they where handing out free MnM's to kids on Halloween because they thought that the college students and snow birds will buy the condos (that started at $200,000) as well as pay the tripled home owners insurance because the insurance companies deemed the islands "High Flood Risk compared to the Mainland." The Gulf Shores area has zero going for it except for Lulu's Restaurant, The HangOut, Tanger outlets, Walmart, and the Wharf of Orange Beach (which is still struggling...several years ago half of the Warf's condos where bought by the Sherton Hotel company, and the rest of the condos where sold for a quarter to half of the price that they originally asked for when first built). Mobile is a dead city. The cruise ship terminal only lasted a year before the cruise companies deemed Mobile too expensive to dock compaired to Florida/New Orleans LA. Mobile Airport is a joke. Pensacola Fl Airport is modern in comparison and is cheaper to fly in and out of. Its not just Mobiles Airport that is a joke, its the other airports in Alabama. As someone who lived in California, Virginia, Massachussetts, and now Maryland. I will NEVER live in Alabama again for there is nothing that makes me want to stay. Cheap housing and extremely low house taxes is all the state has for it.

Honestly not suprised of anniston being #1, my grandfather, who passed away about a week ago lived there, he said it used to be a charming small town, now when your in downtown, you got a 30% chance of being robbed by someone, and a 10% chance in the edges of the city. Murders arent uncommon either, as there are 2-3 murders per year, or in other words, there is a 10/100000 chance of getting murdered. Dont ever go to downtown unless you want to see the lord above us

I live in Oxford/Anniston and work in Jacksonville. My husband grew up here, I don't think the PCB thing is much of an issue as it was 10 years ago (it should not have been an issue in the first place, but I'm glad it isn't as terrible)
Mostly the crime rate is high. But I would walk up and down Noble street in Anniston (drunk with my friends) in college weekly and thankfully nothing ever happened. I have friends that live in some of the historic homes near the high school and it isn't too terrible.
Overall, I think the city needs a revitalization of an industry somehow.
I love Birmingham. Great food. Beautiful women. Great extracurricular activities. My time there was really fun. Anniston is like a hour away from Birmingham. Not sure how you consider that a Birmingham suburb, it is not.

im from alabama and i was just WAITING for them to say the city i grew up in, but instead the city my mom grew up in was number 1 hahahah. some parts of alabama are horrible and ugly but other parts are so naturally beautiful and biodiverse, you have to see it
Tarrant is way closer to Birmingham proper than 30 minutes. By half at least. Altho it is NOT any better than you said, it's proximity to the city makes it more viable these days because if you are right on the edge of tarrant, you get plenty of land and privacy, but can be in the city in no time.
I've lived in several areas in Birmingham, and it's surrounding suburbs, and there are a lot of misconceptions about them I've come to find. A lot of the problems stem from neglect post white flight. Which is...understandable, as an order of operations anyway, but is very sad because there are a lot of people just trying to live comfortable, quiet lives. Much like anywhere, I guess.

@@bonne_vie that could definitely be an issue, although I've never heard anyone outright complain about it. Which could be more a symptom of me not knowing as many people that live in tarrant as other places.
But I worked in the coal industry (specifically in Hueytown) for a good 6 years, and there were a few neighborhood complaints about a coal plant there. Reasonable to think that carries over to the other plants for coal/coke/etc in other areas haha

I grew up in Birmingham in the 1960s in the east side of the city it's sad to see it go downhill so much over the years it was a nice place at one time
As I watch this video, I'm doing street view on Google maps. It's a shame how city goes downhill in just a span of a decade. For instance, check "Judy A Collier, CRNP in Birmingham and turn on street view. 2022 - abandoned building that is missing windows, full of graffiti, etc. But if you switch to 2011 you will see a nice green place with neat shrubs and street light. It's sad seeing places like that

I spent 5 months working in Atmore. I can’t disagree with you about the town. But, there’s some great people there. They treated me like a king and made me feel at home.
I remember driving through Birmingham on the Interstate one night. Two cars were rolling up on in from behind. I saw muzzle flashes coming from both cars and realized they were having a running gunfight!!! Thankfully, when they got even with me, one passing on my left, with the other passing on my right; they stopped shooting. Once they got in front of me they resumed their gunfight! 😳😱

Native to Alabama, I’ve lived in Florida, South Mississippi, Florida, and Maine. People don’t give this state enough credit. Florida is my favorite but very expensive, but I’m back in Alabama. The only negative drawbacks like cliques and rural areas and some cities are not safe. Huntsville is booming and I would live here over Maine any day. I do love Florida the most, but it’s for the rich or those making over 100K. Maybe one day. ❤️

I was born in and grew up in Anniston when the city was at its peak (1960s and 1970s.) In that period, Anniston was as prosperous a blue-collar town as any. After the '70s, however, businesses and factories started to close up, notably Monsanto, Alabama Pipe, GE, and a host of textile mills. The closing of Fort McClellan was economically a disaster for Anniston. The closing of the fort along with the exodus of the factories with comparatively well paying jobs has resulted in Anniston losing almost 40% of its population since its peak population of about 34,000 in 1960. (If the Anniston Army Depot were to also be closed the whole area would ultimately blow away.)
The economic downturn has greatly changed the demographics of Anniston. In the 1970 census, Anniston had a population composed of about 80% white and 20% black; today the ratio is about 60% non-white and 40% white. Oxford, a city just south of Anniston, is now the largest city in Calhoun County; with a population of 22,000, Oxford's population has grown 400% since 1970.
There are two main parts of Anniston - east Anniston, which is predominantly residential, and west Anniston, where the factories, plants, mills, warehouses, and lower-income housing are/were located. Nobel Street, which runs through the Anniston downtown business district, is the official demarcation of the two halves, though Quintard Boulevard is more the effective divider of the city.
Even in the 1960s/1970s and before, west Anniston was rather scruffy; most of the money resided in east Anniston. Some sections of east Anniston have also waned, but it still presents more of an image of prosperity than west Anniston.
Anniston has certainly seen better days, but it's not quite the hell-hole so many in the media seem rather eager to portray. Getting congressional and state representatives who are more interested in helping their constituents than "sticking it to the libs" would go a long way.
I lived there in the Lenlock area for about 7.5 years before moving back to Huntsville. It wasnt near as bad as it was (and still is) portrayed to be. The city has its issues but the biggest problem we had was the pyromaniac methhead next door

Leighton Alabama, Muscle Shoals Alabama and Florence Alabama, are great places to live. I have lived in all 3 cities for 50 years, of my life. The people are down to earth and would help you if they can. But I love the country life, I like nature.

I live in Florence and for the most part it’s really nice and friendly. Plenty of jobs and low crime. But like all cities it has its bad zones.
Plenty to do if you have a boat or like to fish or hunt. Tennessee River and Wilson Lake are really nice here. Plus nice golf courses here too. University of North Alabama here and downtown has a lot of fun things to do and places to eat. I love the Boiler Room ( underground bowling. lol)

If I had the money, I would purchase some of those abandoned homes that are still in decent shape and move them out to rural areas and sell them for a decent profit. It’s a shame for them to not be put to good use with the price of lumber and other building materials sky high now.🤷🏻♂️
The old base(Ft.MCclellan) is a good place to live. It took some time, but the land is being redeveloped and new houses are being built near the bypass. Northeast Alabama is ok 🙂
