Great to see this video extensively covered in Ben Wardle's new book; Mark Hollis, A Perfect Silence. The book is highly recommended, despite Wardle mistakenly crediting Edlesborough as being near Bedford.
Just finished reading Ben Wardle's book on your recommendation. Well written and interesting re Mark and his interaction with the music industry. I love this Dum Dum video as I was living less than a mile from where it was filmed.
And they still say that the English don't have a sense of humor. Mark had a lot, he was always smiling in the photos, how much charisma he gave us, just through his eyes 😍
Thank you Tim Pope for giving us such great video's of Mark Hollis and Talk Talk! Had you not made the clip of 'Such a Shame' we would not have the happiness of enjoying Mark's funny and adorable looks, as he hid himself most of the times behind sunglasses. Understandable though, being such a sensitive person. Tim Pope's 'I want to be a Tree' (featuring a.o. Hollis and The Cure) is also very sweet!
another huge thankyou here, been looking for this video for some time, as i couldn't remember which song it was for - and it is my favourite vid of theirs! thanks Saskia for the heads up on the other video - i will go search for that right now!!
PBS had a music video show called Color Sounds that would highlight vowels or consonants of the lyrics. They played all types of music. This and It's My Life were Talk Talk videos they played.
Quanto sarebbe bello che i fan dei talk talk potessero riunirsi in quel campo e cantare dum dum girl. Sarebbe un grande omaggio a un grande artista. Un modo bellissimo per ricordarlo e ringraziarlo. We miss Mark ❤️
Vielen lieben Dank für das Hochladen dieses Videos!! Immer wieder schön anzusehen wie viel Spaß diese Jungs hatten! Mark Hollis war ein begnadeter Sänger und ein Genie. R.I.P. Mark, i love you forever and ever!!!
The more I listen to hits of the 80s the more it hits me how the bass was such a groove. Songs like Head over Heels as well. Talk Talk are just one of those great bands from that time. A few hit singles but the albums are classic.
Back in the 80s I had a Now! pre-recorded video cassette with this video on it. I absolutely loved this song which wasn't a hit in the UK and that video was the first place I ever heard it. In fact I became a bit obsessed with this video that I used to watch it over and over again. I already knew Talk Talk from the singles they released from The Party's Over but this became my proper way in. Anyway, I think this is one of the greatest music videos ever made - most of Tim Pope's work is excellent - and it wasn't until years later when I finally saw Pink Floyd in Pompeii that I got Mark's reference. It also shows what a great sense of humour they had even though the music was anything but comical. Thank you for uploading this. And thank you Mark Hollis for the music. Sleep well, sir.
Shame it wasn't a hit single in UK, but least it w as in other countries like Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, + Switzerland! Least the album it came off of was a a hit in the UK-It's my Life 😁
uwielbiam:) swietna muzyka, zamieszanie i chaos, basista w chorku z tamburynem, ktory sie potem wywala na mokrej trawie, stad Hollis nagle pyta - are you all right? absolutnie kocham*
This is absolutely HUGE! Talk Talk are really unique. Their music was incredibly rich, innovative and original. And yet they hated the celebrity that came with success, and unlike most bands, their music became more and more complex, more and more musically rich and less and less commercial as they grew. Their video clips are all weird, funny and contrast with the depth and "seriousness" of the instrumentation. I think that reflects their disdain and cynicism towards the music industry as a whole. A truly phenomenal band, very talented artists who never took themselves seriously.
How does this only have 192 likes?!?!?!?! They must have had so much fun making it ♥ This is my favourite Talk Talk video - I have the Natural History Best of vids on a VHS video, but have no VHS player anymore!! as for the 1 person that disliked it, well the less said about that the better....
@@jennybrockartist You could be right! Feeling relieved and happy after singing the song, but as just being kissed on the hair by Pope? However, it shows their wit and joy amongst each other, so nice!
I saw this on PBS when I had just started the 5'th grade in fall of 1985. They singer was like being interviewed after an edited shortened version of this. I never new who recorded it or anything. Until I was looking at some songs of that year I guess for Britain charts, funny how I remember certain songs early in life once but never again but always remember them
Mafk hollis soy tu duum gierl por siempre mi hermoso hombre ke sueño tengo kw tener para poder tener un hombre komo a mark hollis solo soñar todo eso nos keda solo soñar 😢😢😢😢😢
"How are you my old china?" is cockney for 'how are you my dear friend'. Cockney is dielect which originates from the people of East London - Shoreditch, Algate and Whitechapel areas. It is based on ryhming. China plate means best mate. To say, my old china means mate or friend. Duchess for life means wife. So you would say, have you seen my duchess. Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells, the Guy Ritchie film, has a great scene where they translate cockney.

A common mistake

That intro with the “trousers” bit! 🤣
Great to see this back Rover! It was filmed a very short distance from my home & the area is little changed today.

Rest in Peace Mark Hollis. You are greatly missed. Your music will live on

Brilliant musicians. RIP Mark. ❤️🙏
how to record live vocals in a windy field with an unshielded mic as good as in a studio, that takes some production, especially in 1984.
I´m asking the same. May be proceseed in a rack there
This video and performance touches the very soul.
Thankyou.
Mark Hollis.. What a genius... What a great Band ❤️🌻
Mark Hollis would have been 67 today, 4th January. Much missed!

If you called a song Dum Dum Girl in 2021 people would freak out!
Evolution going backwards I'd say ;-)
Now.... in 2023 you get arrested😂
G-d Bless Mark Hollis. Only the good die young(er).
"Who is he?" says Mark to Lee, smiling so gladly "We'll like him"...
and I bet they stayed very good friends for the rest of their lives...
I think Mark says "I feel like him", calling back to their conversation at the beginning :D

Best song Roxy Music never wrote . This guy is a Bryan Ferry acolyte.
"Trousers, Tra, Trousies."
can somebody please tell me what they‘re saying starting from 2:58? i‘m struggling with the accent there 🥲
'How are you, my old China? Alright!!!?'

So the voice audio is live capture?
