Mercedes C230 Fuel Filter Level Sender Replacement and Fuel Pump Removal DIY (Mercedes W203)

  • ► The fuel level sender, which also contains the fuel filter on this 2007 Mercedes C230, was cracked and leaking on the top. Even after a poor repair with epoxy, it still smelled like fuel inside of the cabin. Our Mercedes Catalog Manager, Kyle Bascombe, walks you through the process of how to remove and replace the fuel level sender. This DIY will also help those who need to remove and replace their fuel pump as you also need to remove that to replace the fuel level sender.
While this DIY was completed on a W203 Mercedes C230, it's also applicable to the C280, C350, or really any other Mercedes W209. The process won't be exact, but close enough to where you should be able to follow along.

    Mr. Handsome is back!
I made the mistake of taking my w211 to the dealer for a fuel pump replacement. They spilled gas everywhere and gave me the car back in such poor condition I had to roll the windows down for months to get rid of the fuel smell. Ended up using baking soda myself to clean it all out.

I unfortunately bought a 2006 clk 350 last week and just discovered that the gas is on top of the fuel sender (breached the seal), so thankfully I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty and try this tomorrow morning! This is by far the best video for what I needed! My employee and I watched this last night (new years) and he said you have charisma! Well done!

This is by far the best automotive instructional video I have come across on line. Congratulations Kyle and your crew. You prove yourself to be knowledgeable, and experienced, and your production quality is outstanding. I have been a GM ( Cadillac/GMC/Olds/Buick) dealership mechanic for over 35 years. I especially like the fact that you included valuable tips with us that are only gained through personal experience, and you were very thorough in your explanations. You included tool and parts information and links. Although I am not primarily a Mercedes Tech. I AM subscribing. I like your style. One thing I'd like to give you a hard time about...you didn't replace the missing screw. I'm sure it was only to meet video time constraints. Thank you for all your efforts. You are appreciated.

Thank You, very complete well presented video. Explained a complicated fuel system repair and the bozo that messed it up before your repair. I do think I would have filled the extra screw holes and replaced the missing screws just to keep the cab sealed. Nice work, this will certainly save me time as I am forced to do the same repair now.

Good Job Kyle. It is good to appreciate the effort in getting spot-on video while working inside a tight hole. Your editing was very relevant. Your narration is indicative of someone who has gone through adequate technical education combined with good working experience. I have subscribed, and if you have new videos on Benz let me know. I use a 2016 GL450 but the tech info is relevant also. With a little digression here, I use to wonder why good technical topics like this don't have as much view as mundane ones. I could see 11 million views on "RESTORATION OF AN 1829 RUSTY HAND GRINDER" while this one can hardly get 25,000 views. A new 2021 hand grinder costs only $10. Whats up folks?? Our grey mattar may be toast soon if we don't work it up.

    NOTE: VERY IMPORTANT///////
This is the ONLY VIDEO, which shows the CORRECT REPLACEMENT PARTS for the 2006 to 2007, C230, Passengers side fuel pump. for vehicles with the FLEX FUEL engine..... Most of the other videos indicate the incorrect fuel pump....
From what I can Ascertain ......
There is a gasoline only fuel pump where the pump power wires are integral with the fuel level wiring harness, where fuel pump power is supplied from the drivers side (USA) fuel accumulator/level assembly
There is a Flex Fuel fuel pump (like the one shown in this video), where the pump power wires exit the top of the fuel pump housing (passengers side USA)
    ......
MOST PARTS OUTLETS ...... sell the WRONG FUEL PUMP .... for 2006 to 2007 C230 with the V6. as they do not distinguish between the gasoline and flex fuel vehicles. The two pump assemblies are NOT INTERCHANGABLE. and the GAS ONLY PUMP will NOT FIT the FLex Fuel vehicle or vice versa.
......VERY IMPORTANT..... Kyle makes ONE MISTAKE in this video, he refers to the fuel pump (RIght Side) with the power connector on the top of the pump, as a PZEV pump, where in fact that is a Flex Fuel pump assembly. The PZEV pumps are integrated into the fuel tank and therefore not removable. For PZEV vehicles, one is required to purchase the entire fuel tank assembly. Additionally, the Flex Fuel supply assembly (Pump and Accumulator) are not interchangeable with the gasoline only models
    Other than that...
    Excellent Job .... Kyle Bascombe

The fuel pump control module is sending 12volts to the fuel pump (old and new) and there is no noise at the pump. Is it possible that a defective pressure regulator is preventing pump operation?

Should we unplug the battery before doing this?

    • @tjhessmon4327
      @tjhessmon4327 Před rokem

Yes... Always unplug the main vehicle power source prior to working with the fuel tank and fuel pumps, Kyle mentions that early on.
Its equally a good idea to wear a grounding strap, and to try to use tools which are constructed to resist sparks
Also its best to keep a fire extinguisher handy
      .......
My rule of thumb is to drain the fuel from the tank once you remove the fuel pump (Right Side), in order to avoid a fire which can get out of control and be constantly fed once it starts.
Remember..... If you do this job yourself, you will be working in an area (once the tank is open) with gasoline fumes.
So, common sense tells you to remove as much fuel from the tank as possible...... have good airflow in the area your working within.... and be prepared for the risk of fire....

The external fuel filter is filter media container within a sealed cannister, there is no proper way to open the sealed canister to replace the filter media itself, therefore you must purchase the entire assembly.

Guy who did job previously: "OK nice, while that JB Weld dries up all I have left to do is to put these 6 fasteners in 6 holes."
*Drills 6 holes in the same area* (3:36)
*Realizes there are 6 factory holes that line up after losing 1 fastener*

You arent wrong George lol. All those bonus holes hurt to see, almost always better off DIY'ing jobs because no one cares about your car more than yourself!

I would not ascertain that German cars are unreliable ... all vehicles today are complicated.... and as the technical complexity grows. so to the risk of failure associated with such complexity.
German designs are no more unreliable than any other complicated vehicle designs. As a mater of fact, most fuel injection systems used in vehicles. are constructed using Bosch (German) components and or their designs.
Removing complexity from any vehicle, should increase its reliability, given that the components use are equal in MTBF.
      .......
Therefore, I don't agree with your blanket statement that all German cars are unreliable.

Is it safer to do this with a close to full tank of gas to reduce vapors? I see a lot of people do this on an almost empty tank but I would think that is more unsafe.

Less fuel in the tank will make it for a cleaner job. With the windows and doors open you will have more than enough airflow.

The fuel filter is integrated into the sending unit assembly.
