I was in the Jolly Rogers from 85-89 and made two cruises with them, once on the Nimitz and then the Roosevelt. My favorite design was when the AJs went to the inside, making room for a much larger Ernie. My recollection is that the VF-84 was on the ventral fins, which I did not like (the engines leaked a lot, and the ventral fins looked trashy all the time). Also, the drop tanks were gloss black with the gold chevrons, I didn't like that much either. The show birds 200 and 201 were painted far too often and the pilots reported that the additional paint noticeably affected the top speed and handling of the aircraft. I don't think the Navy cared since those aircraft, being at airshows and big game flyovers, probably increased recruitment.
Thanks, that's some interesting info there. It must have been quite an experience to see these jets up close for real. How often would these aircraft been cleaned, and how often were they repainted? As far as I see 'VF-84' was removed from the ventral fins by 89, now I understand why :D I have yet to find a photo of the black drop tank, that must have looked cool.
Yes, VF-84 color schemes are accurate, as I remember them during my time. During deployment it seemed that more aircraft got the low-vis gray treatment. The hi-vis paint scheme did look outstanding/awesome! G Hood, MM1, 82-86 USS Nimitz CVN-68

I always love your paints, the only thing I would request, is that you would have given more variety to the Modex numbers. Instead of repeating 201 and 202 maybe give us a 205, 207, and 210.
I make whatever skin I have enough info about. I have to figure out the BuNo, the names on the canopy, have enough reference photos, I can't just put whatever modex on there and invent the rest. Also, these were not in service at the same time - and there was a 200-201-202, etc...each year.
