  • NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Crescendo 381) Out of Los Angeles, this obscure 'Wall of Sound' production from December 1966 is quite a stunner to say the least. Recorded by a rock group of teens from Oceanside, California, lead vocalist and composer of 'My Son', CRAIG CARLL was barely seventeen years old and managed to slip quite comfortably in the Bill Medley style of 'Blue-Eyed Soul' singing. While the band composed, performed and stayed within the garage rock & roll style on their handful of recordings issued on Era, GNP Crescendo & Feather, this single really stands out. Unfortunately, upon release of the record, it was getting play on the east coast but was quickly pulled from the rotation after Geoff Bradley, a former arranger who worked with the group claimed to have co-wrote the song. On the west coast where the band's followers were, they thought the group had sold out and went mainstream. A magnificent production that really should have had a better fate than languishing in obscurity.

Craig Carll was my grandpa on my mother’s side of the family. I never personally met him but I’ve only heard good things about him.

Hi Dan. I recently discovered this absolute gem of a song. Question: Is it true that Geoff Bradley wrote the lyrics to this song, or did Craig write them? Beautiful song either way. It should have been a massive hit.

My name is Geoff Bradley and although I think the Lyrics was a really good band & Craig was an exceptional singer, I wrote "My Son" the day my boy was born..Craig asked me if he could record the song & I said sure, go ahead...I didn't say that he or anybody else could claim that they wrote it..Like I said before, Craig was a great singer & songwriter & the band did an exceptional job on the record..Also, kudos to Gold Star Studios for a killer production & to Stan Ross for being the life's blood of the studio and all the music that came out of Gold Star......R.I.P. Craig Carll & Stan Ross...

The Wrecking Crew, the artists, the songs, the productions, the times, all made Gold Star Studio quite a special place.

loved hearing them do this LIVE, Oceanside Community Center dances, back in late 60's. Also on TV8 Dancetime. Hopefully someone will re-post that video of The Lyrics doing My Son, and So Glad. Loved that so much. What North county memories.
