I agree that allowing a player to use his PC kompromat doesn’t make much sense if it’s been revealed. But, it could work for me if the PC’s still hidden.
Using Kompromat on your revealed PC is one of the few rules that feels like they put in for gameplay balance despite not being thematic. With bribes, you can bribe any other character so they could make the rule thematic. With K the tile limits you to one character, so picking up your K would just feel bad without them allowing it. It is unthematic to not punish a player for blind luck, I guess.
I was thinking now about the possibility of playing a Kompromat on my own Revealed Player Character. It's a bit of a stretch, but imagine this: in the past, I did something illegal (I put up a criminal scheme, for example) that actually enabled me to execute a free action now. However, I knew that some compromising materials could be proof that linked me to the crimes. I refrained myself from doing the free action the scheme would allow me, for worrying that the Kompromat could be out in the open. But I managed to secure those materials, and because of that I am not restricted to act from that fear. In summary, the thematic interpretation of using a Kompromat on yourself would not be threatening yourself, but making sure that you cannot be threatened by someone else and thus cashing in the results of the crimes described in the Kompromat. What do you think?
Of course, it's up to you to use your own view of the story behind Stationfall. That's why it's a great storytelling game. And by doing so, you agree with the original rules. For my part, I'm still not convinced by this self-kompromat issue. Feeling relief, as you suggest, would unlock a free action until the end of the game, no ? Why a single free action only when playing the Kompromat ?
