Kitchen staff definitely deserve a day off. As a passenger I don't feel it would be an inconvenience or disappointment to have each restaurant rotate being closed one day out of the week so these guys can get some rest. (Buffet might be a different story).

How about hiring more cooks. That’s insane. I honestly believe , if the average passenger knew that cooks didn’t get any time off , as well as working the hours that they work. They would demand that these cruise lines change how they do business .

That's a lot of hours and a lot of hard work, I suppose you can eat well, and save a lot of money. No time to spend it. He's right about a day off - very essential to recharge your batteries.
One day on a ship I was on, they had a cookery demonstration in the atrium. The head Chef showed us a variety of of specialities and haute cuisines etc., with a commentary all the while from the Cruise Director. During the show, the CD was interviewng the HC about his job etc. he asked what he cooks for himself when home, out of all the fabulous dishes of the world at his fingertips. The reply....? Beans on toast 😆.

Love your videos and how they make it easier for us to be closer to our crew and provide them with the proper appreciation and get along well with them. I'm 63 and she's 57 so we're not super demanding. I'm an experienced sailor with an O'Day 37 sailboat. As an engineer I know what's involved in running the massive ship. Lucy, I love all your videos that show the different departments on a cruise ship.
I especially love this video about the cooks life on Virgin.
You think a big cruise ship could spare at least one day a month per person just so the cooks can get a day off. I can’t believe people work six, eight actual or nine months on a ship without a day off. At least people in the shops get to have a half-day off or can work in incentive to get at least one full day off. It must be terrible for housekeeping, and FNB not to have any days off on their long contracts.
I’m sure if other cruises saw your videos, Lucy, they wouldn’t think twice about keeping the gratuities. They added onto their cruise, fair or even give extra gratuities to the kitchen stafff who may or may not ever see it tip. On a cruise ship, you might give an extra tip to your waiter, but they’re just bringing you the food. Imagine the poor chef and cooks behind-the-scenes slaving away, making your food I never ever seen that extra tip. Makes me wanna tip to the hard-working people behind-the-scenes on
