Amazing Scenic Drive Through Wind River Canyon - 2500 Feet Deep - A Must Do Route To Yellowstone!

This amazing drive cuts through colorful canyon walls 250 stories tall, with rock ranging from 220 million to 3 billion years old, making Wind River Canyon famous among geologists for its extensive and scenic exposures of rocks. The Wind River Canyon is a crack in time, 17 miles long, 200 to 3,000 feet wide and 2,500 feet deep. The road through the canyon has over 300 feet elevation climb southward and crosses rocks recording about 3 billion years in time. This short drive offers history (it borders the Wind River Indian Reservation) as well as geology. The Wind River has cut this canyon right across the Owl Creek Mountains that were uplifted 50-70 million years ago. That means the river is paradoxically older than the mountains! US 20, the Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway includes a number of homes along the highway and a Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad line. The north end, where we begin this drive, is at the Wedding of the Waters, where the Wind becomes the Bighorn River, and we travel upstream to the start of the Wind at Boysen Reservoir & State Park.

Thermopolis is at the intersection of U.S. 20 and Wyoming 120.
From Yellowstone 14/16/20 & Cody, take Wyoming 120 south.
From Casper, take U.S. 20/26 west to Shoshone, then U.S. 20 north.
From Lander, take Wyoming 789 east to Shoshone, then U.S. 20 north.
