Tolumnia are the cutest little miniature orchids- twig epiphytes that need to dry between waterings, and I have finally become successful with them. Happy birthday 🥳🎂 Great little orchid haul you got there. I'm very keen to see how you transition the beautiful little cattleya from organic to inorganic, and the care and maintenance steps you take over the months to settle it in. I have quite a few young orchids around that size and smaller, and nothing to really go by for repotting and transitioning. So I'm hesitant to do anything, which might end up being detrimental to them. Thank you for sharing these little darlings 💗
Hi Megan! Maybe I will have to start a series with these mass repots I have done and follow them every few months as they adapt! I always mean well and start projects like that, then run out of storage space and accidentally delete, or forget to make the updates! I will try harder since you would like to see the transition, it can be my motivation 🙂 I love catt seedlings around this size, seedling is maybe the wrong word since they are just out of that ultra fussy seedling stage, and seem to adapt quickly and grow quite fast! But catts are secrets my favourite because they do so well in LECA in my climate. Thanks so much for watching, have a great day! 🙂

Hi Tina! Thankyou! I am getting really into them, my first few I really struggled with letting them dry, you know me, I like wet roots 😅 which of course leads to dead tolumnias. Lava rock and well ventilated pots seem to be my saviour for this, as I can leave a little water reservoir, it dries within a few days and then I water at the next weekend, satisfies my need to leave water in the reservoir while also drying enough for the Tolumnia! I did so well with my first ones growing in moss, in tiny pots, on a heat mat, they would dry in a day though so I thought to improve the setup, and killed them 😅 They don't like too much of my version of love 🤣 so happy to have finally found a balance! @@TheOrchidRoom Well now you've gone and convinced me, but I need to watch this space for how well they adapt to semi-hydro.
Oh they don't do well in straight semi-hydro- they need to dry between waterings 🙂 Exceptions to every rule, and tolumnias are notorious for this! Lava rock or river pebbles are your best friend with them if you want to grow them potted in inorganic materials. Net or tiny clay pots allow you to leave a slight reservoir of water, like in the orchitop, which will dry in a few days so you can get them on a weekly cycle in hot weather, and that just about fits them well. They're twig epiphytes from Jamaica mostly, they want rain and then pretty fast drying as an ideal, or they can rot.

Ha that's hilarious, I'd got Zelenkoa onusta from Petren's Orchideen couple of months ago too. Much smaller than yours but I enjoy the journey of getting orchids to flower even more than flowering itself. Repotted it into lava rock and rock wool mix. Hopefully it will like it but if its a rumbler, it will go on mount.

Hi Milan, I totally agree with you, I'm happy to have small plants and watch them grow up! So funny we got the same plant around the same time. I have made a little DIY mount for this guy, I don't really want to pull the cork apart for it though, I tried a corner and it has such delicate roots, think I will massacre them, not a fan of that idea. Does cork decompose badly? What would happen if I just left it on the cork and strapped that to the new plastic mount? That's the direction I'm leaning!
@@TheOrchidRoom one of my quirks is having orchids that have the same name (or similar) as people I'm close to. Miltonia Queen Ann (my mum's name is Anna), Ada aurantiaca (my sister's name) and Zelenkoa sounds similar as my very good friend's surname. So I had to have it 🤷🏼♂️
Regarding ageing of Cork it crumbles eventually into small pieces. If cork of your Zelenkoa's isn't very thick I'd just stick it onto your plastic mount. If it is thick maybe try to cut back half of. Watch your fingers though. Good luck 🍀🍀🍀

Happy birthday, nice present! I love Tolumnia too. After a couple of single plant purchases I bought a flask just to see if I could do unflasking. Got 14 plants growing on mounts and 4 in tiny pots. Cant wait till they are old enough to flower, I should get quite a variety of blooms.

Happy birthday! I live close to O&M in Germany and went to their greenhouses a couple of times. Great plants but I agree, the website is not really well designed. Good idea soaking them, I had some mealybugs on some of the plants purchased and also some with scale.
Thankyou! 🙂❤ That sounds great, would love to be able to visit a nursery! Bugs do seem a common theme- they must be against insecticides. In some ways that's not a bad thing. As long as I recieve healthy plants with good roots I'm happy to be on bug zapping duty! 🙂
@@TheOrchidRoom Not sure how they deal with insecticides in these nurseries. But I totally agree, rather healthy plants with some bugs than lots of pesticides on them. The first time I went to an orchid nursery was Schwerter - I was totally overwhelmed by the masses of plants. O&M is great too, just about half an hour drive from where I live :).

Thankyou. Yes, Cattleya leopoldii is fragrant 🙂 The green jade name comes from the green flowers of this variation of an alba colour variety. It is now renamed to tigrina. Very large growing though, this is just a young plant. www.aos.org/orchids/collectors-items/cattleya-tigrina.aspx

You had so much more restraint than I did on my bday haul. Lol Sunset Valley Orchids took my birthday money for aclandiae and coerulea crosses. Lol
Also I really want start some tolumnias. They are so adorable. Currently I just have an Ontolezia, which is 50% oncidium sotoanum, 48% tolumnias and 2% Rodriguezia. Currently waiting to see what it turns into since I can't find any photos of the photos or mature plants. Lol
That sounds like an incredible cross! I hope you get some fragrance from the sotoanum coming through on the little Tolumnia succulent structure! 🙂
@@TheOrchidRoom that's exactly why I had to get it. All I could think of was the possibility of fragrant flowers on a tolumnia fan! I'm hoping it stays mini too. Sotoanum seems to readily shrink (twinkles) so I'm hopeful! 😁
If you like scale or other little critters, order from Orchids & More. That's my experience in the past years.

@@TheOrchidRoom I've been rowing orchids for over 35 years now. So I bought from many "Nurseries" over the years. O&M has quite large plants for the price but many come to you with visitors you rather not have. I used to buy from them but not anymore, the same goes for most Dutch nurseries that still are around. One in particular as they are not a nursery but just sell orchids on,which they bought in and at far too high prices fr what you get. A nice web-shop isn't always what it seems. I now mostly buy from a few German nurseries, one in Belgium and one in the Netherlands.
Good for you, but we don't always share the same experience. I recently had a horrible experience with one of your favourite nurseries, and will not be ordering from them again. I also won't be slating them, because I recognise my experience is not universal.
@@TheOrchidRoom Well, on the positive side, O&M is a real nursery and mostly grow and produce their own orchids. And yes, their website isn't easy to navigate but its always been like that.

Great collection of orchids. I recently purchased a Tolumnia for $32:00. It's the size of a half dollar. How many years will it take to bloom?
I'm not sure, I've never seen a dollar- pounds over here haha. If it's a similar size to any of these in this video then it has the ability to bloom at any time, depending on care 🙂
