Dealing with Water Leaks on New Ford Transit Van Conversion

- Not only are the factory holes in the roof of our Transits notoriously poorly sealed and therefore highly prone to leaking into your beautiful converted van, but there are also bad welds on some Transits. I was one such unlucky person.
After finding a stream of water inside the rear pillar of my Transit after a drive through a rainstorm, I located an unfinished weld and sealed it as well as the poor little caps that Ford puts over the factory holes in the roof of your van.

I used Through the Roof for sealant: amzn.to/2PGhmlY
My insulation was safe because it is hydrophobic 3M Thinsulate: amzn.to/3e3hPcl

Not me literally searching about transit roof leaks with my roof dripping and this video coming up 😂
mariah nooo i am so sorry... do you think its those little caps? you should be able to push on them (gently) and tell if they have cracked and been letting water in.
also there is the poor welds/seals along the back that were giving me a probem...let me know if you need help
I have watched countless videos on van conversions. You are the only person to ever mention this danger. THANK YOU! You have probably save many of us from expensive repairs and major frustration. Love your videos - helpful and entertaining. You keep making them, and we'll keep watching them.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Twyla! I love making these and in my opinion they just keep getting better and more fun to make (just took the van out to cook my first meal in it here in the mountains in Colorado stay tuned, it's beautiful!). Glad they're helpful to you!
We have an 07 transit minibus! We had water coming in the back from 2 places ! We used roofing/cutter sealant which is part rubber/silicone. Then we used a product called FlashBand and covered every roof join and factory mount holes and so far not more water in the van !!! Cheap fix guys
better to be thorough than sorry! Sounds like you will never be sorry haha
Thank you so much for this my van has been leaking lots of water but we are unable to find the leak
ahh I hope this helped locate the leaks then! Watch out for random bad welds at other locations / seams in the van, too!
This is incredibly helpful!!! We wouldn’t have known about this at all, so thanks!!!!
Of course! Also...I just found even more poor welding spots up near the same corner as the original leak. I would just check each side of your van to see if welds look the same or different than each other. In my case the welds in the back on top both looked different and the reason was that the side I have been having to re-seal was a bad weld job. Keep your eyes open!
Do not use Silicone. It is not removal and can damage paint. Use Lexel or Seal & Peal. Glue thin 1/16" White Polystyrene 2" circle or square over each roof mounting point. If you ever want to use the mounting point you will be able to.
oo this is useful to know! thank you
It rained yesterday and i noticed a water near the ceiling and a lot of water near my passenger wheel well. So thanks for this video im going to have to check everything before i insulate
Super glad you're able to do this before getting far along in the build. I got so lucky seeing it before I had my paneling and cabinetry up...I'd recommend going overboard with the sealing. I went back 3 separate times each time just sealing a little bit until finally I got tired of the repetition and just sealed ANYTHING that even remotely looked like a weak seal / weld.
@@JeremiahLuke thanks for tip.
Glad I saw this. I've had water come in lately and I suspected the they bits but wasn't sure so now they will be getting sealed
so glad to be spreading the awareness... seal them up!
@@JeremiahLuke that's the plan for this weekend
We had a major tropical storm in SoCal. Taking my van to Home Depot and I hear this major sloshing going on in the back. There was 3" of water inside the van frame behind my driver's seat to the rear wheel well. Fortunately, I'm only starting on my floors. Trying to find the video where someone mentions a frame leak near the gasoline receptacle, by the driver's door. Filled all of the ports where the exterior plastic side molding enters the metal frame all around, sealed the interior. Also had those missing welds in the back of my high top transit. Near impossible to get the sealant inside it.
My Ford Ecoline same exact thing! Thank you!
you got it!
Thank you
Great video pointing out potential water leak areas!
Did you encounter any problems for door handles and the sliding door lock mechanism? If so, how did you fix them?
Same spot on my transit
That thinsulate good for hot and cold weather insulation?
Ford really sucks at building vans these days. They should have kept building the Econolines and just put on a longer and higher body. The Transits smaller engines last half the life a 5.4L flex fuel motor does. My 2012 E350 lasted 840K and was burning oil so I replaced with a factory remanufactured one. I do expediting and 95% of my miles are cruising down the interstates.
Nice video. Did it sort your leak?
Sure did! Zero leaks since then.
Ford is crap. How the heck could not they not do a better job than this. These vans are not cheap
agreed - I imagine it comes down to probabilities of those becoming a "major" issue needing action on behalf of Ford and then the cost over the sum of millions of vans manufactured of implementing a more secure (and expensive) solution.
Oh well.
They also have the wimpiest bump stops on the rear axels. Replacing those was one of the best decisions I made. Makes it feel less like a boat in a turbulent bay of water.
