    Really amazing to see Yeovil as it was when I was a lot younger. I can remember Bides Gardens as if it was yesterday, then they built a road through it. Also I can remember the George Hotel in Middle Street, demolished to make way for a supermarket at the time called Elmo. Would not have been allowed to happen today. The video is wonderful trip back in time, Trouble is it makes me fill old now

    What fantastic footage. I was born in Yeovil in the 40s.This brought back so many memories: the "Yeovil Junk" train between Town station & Yeovil Junction; Ninesprings, when the Three Bears Cottage was still there & lived in; the Odeon ( from the roof of which I think many of the panoramic views were taken. Yeovil was a lovely,elegant town. It is such a shame the Council bulldozed away so much of its historic past in the cause of traffic flow & parking. Particulalry scandalous was the way the 15th Century "George Inn" was pulled down because it was siad to be dangerous for pedestrians to walk in front of it (there had been one fatality over the many years), then in less than the space of a year they pedestrianised Middle Street!. They also pulled down lovely Georgian Cottages in Peter Street to provide a car park, not to mention Summerhouse Terrace, Talbot Street and other buildings to make another one at the foot of the town. I came upon this lovely video by way of a clip showing skaters being mugged by 8 year olds.What a contrast! Didn't recognise the place, so much has gone.

    Loved the film so many memories especially the Albion which I used as my local. Looked hard at the shoots of the Convent girls walking past the Black Horse as I went there . What a lovely place Yeovil use to be,glad I left before it was completely ruined but it`s still my hometown Poor old Bides Gardens picking up the Horse Chestnuts in the Autumn on my way to St Gildas and the Odeon Saturday mornings those were the days!

    Brilliant video. Remember the Hospital being built and Queensway. Wish the town kept Bides gardens. Lovely to see the buildings in lower Middle St, including the Coronation Hotel and the building down Vicarage St, including the Albion where my mate Jamie lived, his parents use to run the pub in the early 1980's.

    The Luftwaffe were nothing compared to the town council. I was born in '78 so only got to know Yeovil after the planners had wrecked it - what a shame.

    Wonderful to see my home town before it was ruined. My late father was gardener at the old Hospital when I was born, which was 1953. I was actually born in Balidon on West Coker road. the shot at 33.40 I believe is at the rear of Ninesprings. By an incredible coincidence yesterday (9-10-2015) I was looking at old photos from my mother who has just died, and there we are at that very spot. Thanks for sharing this memory-stirring video.

    It all went downhill for Yeovil after they widened Recklesford to form a town center by-pass. To do this they destroyed the attractive Bides Garden, and demolished the fore-court of FW. Saunders then Rootes Group Dealers destroying the business of a good local employer firm of whom I was one. Return to Yeovil? Never, never, never.

    Nick, the cine film on which this is based was made by Mr. Brown , the manager of the cinema in Yeovil. He appears on the film, as does his wife. Although I guess that he is now deceased you should make reference to this in your introductory notes.

      John This film was taken by my father not anyone else.

    • @johnmwarr
      @johnmwarr Před 5 lety

      That's news Nick as I have known of the film for a number of years and assumed that Mr. Brown was the original cine-photographer. Is the gentleman in the film your Dad? Maybe the significant part that the cinema roof plays in the film lead me, and others, to the wrong conclusion.
      Either way it is a splendid record of times past which will never return.

      @johnmwarr Před 5 lety

      Well there we go! I have recently done exactly the same with the intention of doing an updated version of the film. Did you digitise the film or did your Dad also live in the digital age and was therefore able to get the cine transferred? Either way, the record is irreplaceable. ~ Thank you.

    How splendid Yeovil looked. Proud residents and happy. What a tragic change since then thanks to thoughtless planners and changing values driven by the socialist politics of envy.
