As an Excavator by trade. I recommend getting a dozer and a large excavator in there to speed things up ,then finish with the small stuff.If you rent the x2 pcs for a week you will get the project moving along.

I had a job where me and a crew dug out a really mucky pond. i can remember we used a long reach track hoe and then one day they brought an old dozer like d6 size put that in the bottom it was awesome. One of the dump truck drivers got in a head on collision. so i didn't get to see the project all the way to end. Love watching your videos brings back good memories.

Rent a larger excavator and a highlift and you would be done in a day, use the tractors to clean up around the pond. Good effort with the equipment you have but sometimes you have to change plans to end up with the right outcome Good luck enjoying watching the series

You know before you ever started the pond didn’t look that bad. But when you have the tractors and excavator in there boy that thing is big.
Heads up I told my cluttered garage to get ahold of you to help him at his new place. I couldn’t think anyone else that hold do a better job on the task that he is doing.
You may already be past the point where this is feasible, but one thing you could try would be hitching your small DK dump trailer behind the 5E, and loading that out with the mini ex, if you are in a place where the tractor can get close enough on solid ground. Looks like it could work, but I know that sometime the camera angle is deceiving. Great video again, really enjoying the pond series!

Looks like you need some mud mats..! You can get down in the Middle and start bailing it out from there..! Get them up to solid ground so the tractors can move it..! You may even have to move it Twice before the tractors can reach it
I am thinking that they are doing well with the equipment they are using, but I would think a large excavator and a dozer would have the pond cleared out and a good layer of clay spread by now.
Wait till winter and the frost that firms the ground. That is the answer to the tractors getting job done
You need to start further out of the pond with your ramps. Try to have the depth you want down in the ramp before reaching the pond. This makes it much easier to move in and out of the pond as you are on stable ground the whole time.
Good progress even with the muddy conditions, hopefully there won't be any rain in the forecast and give the mud a chance to dry out a little.
Probably the most efficient means of digging a pond is to use a drag line. It is what sand and gravel operators use to get all the sand and gravel out and leave a pond when finished. The SCS (now called Natural resource Conservation Service ) also often used a drag line when digging a farm pond. There is no wasted motion.
I like that you're trying this with the tractors as content to watch and to show the limitations of these tractors. Also the fun of digging. However, there is no question that the right equipment is to rent a dozer and a large excavator. And a dump truck or large dump trailer.
I'd say at the very least using the current equipment you should dig out a larger ramp area sloped shallow enough to bring in a dump trailer and have the buckets filling the dump trailer instead of moving it all bucket by bucket.
that pond is becoming a giant project. i love kens bolt on hooks. i got two with the clevis mount for the backside and the differential lock pedal. great products.
You need are about two hundred boy scouts with shovels. They help you and they earn a badge in the process. It's a win win proposition.

You need some railroad ties that are bolted together as a support pad. Lay them in front of the mini and drive up on it dig out what you can then move the pad forward and dig more. About 4 ties would be wide enough for the mini to sit on to dig.
Awesome. Like working concrete with boards to kneel on. And he is using the equipment he has, which I think is a founding principal of this channel. It does have tractor in the title not skid steer time with Tim.

Ditto…that right hand door kit seems so natural, so necessary, and the kit seems so stock, it was hard for me to remember it didn’t come from the factory that way, like it should have. Great stuff.
Should be filling that bucket of the 5series then backing down and pulling up piles that you stage with the mini x all the way to the flat top with that blade and let the little machines scoop those piles up
Tire chains work great on front tires make a hell of a diffrence
When excavating ponds I tend to dredge it from the center and work my way to the edge and let it dry out and it’s easier to get out when it drys

Tim, you could definitely use a dozer to move that stuff and shape that pond. But then using what you have is more challenging.
Dozer most needed for shaping. Really don’t have any idea how I am going to get it shaped reasonably without a dozer!
@@TractorTimewithTim with Summer quickly ending In NW PA our Falls can be pretty wet the further in to Fall we get. If you guy’s are the same this could shut you down until it either it freezes or warms up again and dries out.

That, combined with trade shows and other commitments will make this a challenge!
One of the handiest tools on our small farm is a dump bed wagon. I have a small 2-ton hydraulic lift wagon that I pull behind my Ventrac and load with my CUT FEL I may have to use the FEL once I dump material (a brush pile for example) to move things around, but it avoids multiple trips like you all are doing. Loading up a trailer with the excavator would speed things up for sure.

I've cleaned out ponds with a cat953 963 and they work great on ponds like that.
That job might be a cool test for a case dl550 minotaur, but with enough time you will be successful. Great video.
Tim, I always enjoy the on-the-job perspectives and lessons learned you experience through your projects, it really does show how things would turn out if we all went into these DIY.
10:09 I do wonder if it would have been more effective to position your excavator where the tractor keeps almost bogging down; pile your spoils/material on the hard level ground off to your left (facing into the pond) or pile 180 behind you. at least until the ramp is made.
Or work it out so your collection crew can drive down, through the pond and up out the other side you made the ramps in the previous video.
Before this project I had thought a tractor and compact/sub-compact excavator would do the trick for enlarging and deepening our 0,35 acre pond; after seeing this I'm thinking something with bit more bulk and muscle, would be a wiser choice.
I wonder if Volvo would agree to you show casing one of their EC230 Electric Crawler Excavators haha.
My fear is the deeper you go the wet is there or makes it wet. Might be endless pit. Maybe some dry dumped on it and it gets damp and dry on that to make it dryer. Might need a circus tent over the pond to keep it dry. and add fans to blow through. I think fill dirt is best.

Back in the 1960s, many farms had farm ponds built by the SCS for water supply and fire protection. We went swimming in them as soon as the last bucketful of soil was removed. We could feel the cold water from springs welling up in several places in the bottom of the pond on almost every pond I swam in. I later went to work for the SCS after college. Your land is so flat, I don't think artesian springs are your problem. Most of the ponds eventually filled in and eventually reverted back to the wetland they once were, sealing off the springs in the process.

I had a neighbor do a pond. he started with a skid steer but that was not large enough. He needed a full sized excavator.
Tim, giving the project some thought looking at the aerial view at 20:23 mins into the video.
Assuming you intend the deepest point to be the very center and not offset to one end like a swimming pool.
Perhaps excavating the pond as a series of tiered concentric circles (like open cast mining) might be an effective way to dig it out without the issue of getting stuck, as the tractors could skim each ring on a pass gradually working each ''step'' deeper while your excavator reaches to the core and spreads the spoil on the last solid step (on which it sits) so a tractor can pass by behind you and ''skim load'' the spoils, as you would do going into a pile thats been back-dragged for pickup or as you would skimming a level with loader bucket on a driveway / site leveling.

Your working with what you got which it great yes might take a little longer to get to your end goal. May i sugest digging a long ramp all the way back to the garden get the least slope you can then swing the muck around into the buckets of the tractors use them like a mini dumper or if the budget allows get in a dumper. I don't know that I have seen every episode of this series but have you tried running laps around the perimeter with a box blade to try and cut the shore line angle to be less steep? To make it easier for the tractors to get in and out?

I hired a a crew a couple years ago that brought out a huge X with an 80ft boom, and now that my pond has dried up, I can now see exactly where they dug, I am betting the net effect of that 80 ft boom, amounted to about a 20-25 ft wide channel. I have no doubt that’s what you’re seeing with 20ft boom, something similar happening only scaled down to the 20ft compared to what I saw as a net result from the 80ft boom.
Tim, if you dig you a shelf where you reach the center and dug out the mud, put it on the bank for the tractors. Then, dig the shelf out. Keep the tractors on solid ground.

Based on your current equipment, how about digging a channel deeper than the rest of the pond to allow the water to naturally seep into. It should be about the length the length of the pond on one side. This would help the remaining areas to hopefully start to firm up a bit.
Tim, if you have any trade schools near by that teach heavy equipment class, that might be a good opportunity to bring some of their equipment and let students play around and get experience. Especially the difference in tractors vs heavy equipment.
So I’m sure u have figured something out but why not build a ramp for the tractor to travel on to get to where you need to reach with the dry muck that you have already pulled out. And a collection area. Then remove it as you leave

I have really enjoyed this pond series! You found a way to not only put useful hours on your tractor fleet but spend time with friends. In a world that moves so fast being able to have so much time spent like this is nothing short of amazing. I’m hoping this series spans several more videos. Keep up the great work!
I think an interesting comparison in future would be a JD 3046r compared to one of what you have found to be very elusive TYM T474C while it is officially in TYMs 2 series it compares favorably with the JD in length, width, weight, 3 point capacity, and loader capacity. But relevant to this video, the joystick in mine works easily. I would dare to say, that if after having experience with a T474 and it's value, that you as an open minded man would question buying green exclusively. (Here's the part that's sneaky) if Deere sees you considering their competitors that they have been ignoring, they might feel compelled to give you even more favorable lease terms on your long term leases to keep the green dominant on your channel.

I'm far from an expert in any of this stuff, but following your the mindset of trying to stick with the equipment you already have... I think what I would try is on each end of the pond, make it bigger than you want to end-up with just to build an incline that is not nearly as steep and that has a better surface to travel across.
To that end, on the new access inclines you have dug out, I'd get some bigger rock delivered, or maybe find someone who is cutting down trees and use big chunks of wood to have a surface that isn't muck. Basically, just building a good temporary surface to get in and out. You see this all of the time on large construction sites during the phase where they are doing the dirt work... lots of 1-2" river rock around the entrances, temporary rock parking lot, etc.
Essentially; in this stage, I would approach it to build the pond for best access for the equipment you have, cheaply. Also, optimize to stack the muck in a way which minimizes travel time for the tractors rather than it being in one central pile. You can deal with organizing the muck and getting rid of it later. Once you get those things in place, and dig out the muck, then you can focus on undoing the access to shape the pond however you want.
You might need to dig way more out on the ends than planned just for good access, but it will make the process so much more predictable and productive I think.

You might want to dig a gentile ramp out the upper end of the pond into the draw so you can get in and out with the loader tractors.
How is a gentile ramp different than a Jewish ramp? :-)

Looked like the larger cab tractor wasn’t lifting the bucket up enough and was dragging mud trying to get out of the hole
Get dry material put a berm up in a square and throw the slop in that so it won’t flow back in the hole

Almost have to think Tim this would be one of those things where you try to do something with a project every day. Considering how the pond project started, I'd say it's steady progress. I'm thinking if Neil Koch wasn't busy with his, he'd bring his bulldozer over and you'd both have a grand time.

Slow going and it appears the 5 Series could use more rear ballast.
Ole Rex needs to learn how to boom up after getting a scoop on that hill. Bucket up and then he hits reverse, boom arms and part of the bucket are still on the ground, no wonder you’re spinning out.
Any lift of the boom on that pitch tips the tractor. Dragging the boom is only way out. Obviously this scenario didn’t work long term.
@@TractorTimewithTim gotcha. I guess then half buckets or a larger counter weight in the back should have been utilized it would appear.

@@TractorTimewithTim Think of the views though. Like a real crossover episode, with real work. Most of the time anything crossover is just a quick little job with the local person’s equipment.
Y’all could sync the editing together and release each episode close to the same time, and then make viewers go over to the other’s channel to finish the story line. And, with Christy’s drone skills this could easily be a million view project.
Also, get Deere or CAT to lend y’all the equipment local so he doesn’t have to transport. This would be great marketing for them, and a great way to show off their latest equipment.

Excavators are like pruning poles... you always need another 2 feet! For a couple hundred bucks I just upgraded from a 12' to a 18' Stihl pruning pole. How many more $10s of thousands to get 50% more reach with excavator? 😉
You know how to eat an elephant? 1 bite at a time! As long as time isnt an issue, you could do the whole pond with just the mini or even the 4075. Dont be discouraged, you will find a solution that works for you. I enjoy the videos watching and listening to you learning by trial and error.

Still fun at this point. In fact, a bit more fun right now since I’m seeing good progress.
Build a bench for the digger, where you can reach the muck, and place it higher up on a more accessible level for the tractors. When that is dug to dry, solid, build another, and work your way down to solid ground. And have the tractors stay on solid, ground. When your done, you should have that look you see in a large copper or ore mine.

I'm a bit jealous. I was comparing your 46-5 to my bobcat 335. With yours weighing a bit more, &(newer) they are very close on specs, and I would love the cab. And as to your ....dotcom buddy. I was a bit perplexed on your approach on not using larger equipment. But your theme, purpose on using the smaller, or size tractors that a lot of folks who watch your channel use, is the rational behind a lot of your decisions on your strategy on how to approach a problem. Yeah, like you said early on, yes a larger digger would be faster, but what would it take to do the job with what you have on hand.
Need more weight on the rear. That scraper blade is not near enough weight.
Need some mats to drive in closer.
Why are you not using mats (Railroad Ties) to allow support and traction on the ramp??

To be your best bet you probably need a Cat D3 to push that muck out of the hole. But truely your best bet is going to be rent a Long reach excavator. This way you sit on the hard pack ground and you can reach the center of your pond.
I still say you need a dump wagon to pull behind a tractor down in the bottom of that pond
The green dump trailer equipped with a 3 point hitch to gooseneck adapter on the tractor. Don’t load it full.
Are you going to run out of good weather to do what you wanted. Lots of muck.

I would be using a dump trailer connected to a tractor and load with the excavator so you don't move it twice
I feel like you need an extremely large excavator to handle that or you’re going to be there for weeks with friends moving that muck.
What brand and model of headsets do you use to talk between each other in the tractors?
