    I have restored many kits over the years and I have found that a really good way to restore old/rusty hoops is a combination of WD40 and ordinary kitchen tin foil, the foil is abrasive enough to remove the rust, but soft enough not to scratch the hoop, also to remove any badges that are glued to the wrap without damaging them, use dental floss to gently 'saw' away the glue.

    I re-wrapped my first Pearl pro kit many times over the years, until it was sold in 1985/6.
    I had to, as one of the toms supplied, was in a diff color. Tried many diff materials. Including metallic sheet an metallic brass.
    Finally I wrapped it in white plastic.
    The shells were phenolic so were in good condition. Only the kick were in wood fiberglass.
    All this was done in the UK, where wraps were not widely available, then.
    Thro my experience, I also wrapped kits for other people in a drum shop. I had a complete list of the sizes an lengths needed to complete.
    I used d/s tape to hold the wrap on the shell, then carefully mounted the brackets, holders an lugs, finishing of with a second strip of D/S tape, to seal it all
    As long as u started at right angles to the shell, u could be guarenteed to wrap them without gaps when closing up.
    I always did a good job, as it was important to produce a quality product.
    I loved it!

      @@stdrumsgmbh that’s awesome I’ll have a look! Is it still the case that all Pearl finish wraps on the market require 2 sheets for a bass drum? I’ve found printed wraps that are available in one piece but no actual Pearl wraps, and would it be that way on drums that come with a Pearl finish from the factory? Sorry for all the questions but I’ve been looking for a wrap for my kit for ages and have gotten stuck as I couldn’t find any sheets big enough for a bass drum and I’m not a fan of the double seem. My kick is 22x18.

      @boobtubenoob7061 Před 4 měsíci

      @@stdrumsgmbh sorry one more thing.. I notice your wraps in the video are covering the entire shell whereas I’ve seen others recommend leaving 5-10mm of shell exposed at the top and bottom so the wrap doesn’t interfere with the head seating on the bearing edge. Now I’m not sure which approach is correct haha.

    • @stdrumsgmbh
      @stdrumsgmbh  Před 4 měsíci

      @@boobtubenoob7061 all the delmar wraps come in sheets with a length of 54". They make the most high quality wraps and the colors are mostly still like the original vintage ones, so with these wraps you will always need 2 pieces for the BD. There are cheaper Chinese wraps that come in bigger sizes but mostly these are solid colors without these pearl patterns. Regarding leaving a gap around the edges: on oversized shells like gretsch it is absolutely recommended, but in our experience most shells are small enough that you can add wraps without having to worry about the heads fitting. If you run into problems later you can cut out a small window from the overlapping.

    A very lengthy and involved process. I much rather order my wraps precut and with the hi-bong adhesive ends. Wrap seams should meet at a pair of lugs, so they help hold the wraps tightness. Thanks for posting.

    • @DEVILGRAVEDIGGER
      @DEVILGRAVEDIGGER Před rokem

      Wrap expands and contracts with varying temperatures, so glueing is best as it prevents the wrap going slack.

      thanks for the nice feedback! unfortunately I am not completely sure which one it is. I checked on vintagedrumguide.com and it looks like the thunder king in the 1969 catalogue, with white pearl (original color). The "free adjust" double tom arms look pretty much the same, and so does the rest of the hardware. Regarding the shells I'm not sure though.

  • @ShawnxEdge
    @ShawnxEdge Před 2 lety +2

    You’re supposed to glue both the shell and the wrap for a very permanent and stronger adhesion. This will also prevent wrap shrinkage and wrap splitting later.
    I’ve wrapped almost a dozen kits in the past 2 years. I’m not a professional but this how I was taught. The rest of your video is perfect!

      we sell wraps in our shop stdrums.com which are made especially for drums. The most famous manufacturer of high quality wraps is delmar in the USA - they make high quality stuff, but we also got drumwraps for a lower budget.

    • @stdrumsgmbh
      @stdrumsgmbh  Před rokem +2

      basically you can use any small pointy thing to poke a little hole in the wrap from the inside out (we used a very small screwdriver in the video), and then use a tapered reamer from the outside to poke into those holes and really open them.

    Can I wrap over lacquered shells?

    • @stdrumsgmbh
      @stdrumsgmbh  Před 8 měsíci

      Yes, it's possible, however, we always roughen the lacquer finish with sand paper before putting the glue on there.
      The glue will stick better to a rough surface compared to a flat lacquered one - so the lacquer can not be easily restored when you remove the wrap. However, we are currently working on a project with thinner wraps that can be put on top of lacquer and can be removed without damaging the lacquer - we will upload a video on that probably soon

      Actually, we did sand it inside and outside - even though you can't see it in the video (you can see a bit of outside sanding at 1:48 though). We tried to make the video as a tutorial for rewrapping in general, and you don't need to sand every drum on the inside if you want to rewrap it.
