When Carson asked "What's a typical day for Paul McCartney?", he should have said "Wake up, fall out out bed, drag a comb across my head,..."
lol. Good answer!
lol
Paul: "Yeah, well, you know John, I wake up. I get out of bed. You know, I drag a comb across me head." John: "uh huh. I did not know that. That's weird. Weird, wild stuff." Ed: "Ho, ho ho!! Funny!! Funny!!"
Fantastic!!!!
It kills me that my own sister (we are Boomers) would totally NOT get the reference!
Wonderful post!
Lynn Turman Another excellent post, and another which my sister would totally NOT get! Love the references, and the plausibility as well as the satire!
Paul has always been blessed like a fine wine. He just keeps getting better and better. The charm, the light-hearted good wit, the good looks, and the talent, so much good stuff for one man. I'm sure that the ratings for Johnny's show that night looked pretty good too.
Underneath the playful, light-hearted exterior, Paul really is a bit of a scholar and a philosopher. At any rate, he's really thoughtful and has a good head on his shoulders.
Yes, if you love fraud and the occult. Billy's teacher was Alistair Crowley. Btw, we all know how controlled CZcams and media are and, how much they censor truth, and why your comment shows more likes than mine.
And a fan of lucifer
once in a while an angel that composes brilliant songs is sent to Earth to give all nations musical joy. Paul is one of them. From New York City, musician Frank Branden.
Paul and Johnny played answers off each other, and the humor was great. Johnny knows how to play and work his guests to make it a fun night, ....
I was with my friends an we got in line to get in around 4am. It was the largest line up in the history of the show, up to this time. Got back around 11 hours later with our wrist bands. Got within 20 feet of the magical door an it was packed. So there were about a hundred of us left out side.. They film it at 5pm. Made it back home to video tape it.. But my copy isn't that good. Do have the entire show on tape. Another friend an I were able to get in during April 92 to see The Kentucky Headhunters. One of our friends was an usher. We sat right behind the roadies an ended up getting the entire band to sign this great band photo for us. So close but so far. It was fun anyway. I did see Paul an Linda at the premiere for the show in Westwood California
Johnny: "Do you still compose?" Jeeze!
@ Charlie Reinhardt. Give Carson a break! He couldn't get McCartney to relax and reveal what he is really like as an individual. For Carson that interview must have been as difficult as a dentist pulling teeth! Carson was understandably searching for any question that would get McCartney to settle down and feel comfortable doing the interview. Unfortunately McCartney just would not relax and be more interesting.
@@michaelbarlow6610 I like Paul, but the other three made for more engaging interviews, esp John.
Two legends
Paul McCartney and Billy Shears . . 100%
Its rare Johnny interviewed someone that was more famous than he was. He seems to approach this interview like he knows that.
Wow he is just his usual gorgeously handsome self here. (Paul, I am speaking of) He looks every bit as good as 20 years previously. (Even a little better in my opinion)
Lisa K. True, he looked fantastic until Linda died. Then he aged quite a bit and started relying too much on plastic surgery, although in his 60s he still looked very good. But in 1984 he looked just like in the Beatles, only with a greying hair. Very handsome man he always was. He never put on a lot of weight ,or lost a lot of weight as John did, so he always looked his best.
+Fer Abra yeah I don't like how he looks now, not because of his age. Surgeries ruined him. He almost looks like a lady. Weird.
elcaifo exactly. He does not age gracefully.
+elcaifo It's becaus it's not him.
Maggie M.. It could be his twin brother. mileswmathis.com/paul8.pdf
Paul always being good looking , now he is much older but the talent always been there. His music will go on forever.
In my opinion, having expectations of what Paul (or anyone) should say or do or how he should act in an interview only sets you up for disappointment. He's a great singer and songwriter, and from what I've heard, compassionate and generous. Until you have accomplished and experienced what Paul has, would those who have negative opinions about him mind just shutting up?
would mikeCrook mind just shutting up?
yes, he minds.
mikeCrook needs to shut up
+mike crook Quiet
Finally found the entire hour. Now just need the time to get it together an post it
I have seen zillions of Paul McCartney interviews. He just doesn't seem like he is into doing this interview.....he probably forced himself to do it to plug his movie
+inkey2 -- Carson seems completely uninspired here. One of his worst interviews.
+mrswimmyboy Carson has always been a light weight when it came to interviewing and that's the way he liked it. He stated once that his goal was to (I have to paraphrase this because it was long ago) make the guest feel comfortable and look good so yeah he was the usual uninspired Johnny. But all that being said....Paul really does not want to be there. He looks like he is hot and sweating a little, he loosened his tie, he kept nervously shaking his foot back and fourth in the beginning, the delivery of his words seemed flat and not the usual upbeat Paul. I would not have noticed it had I not already seen endless McCartney interviews
+inkey2 - Far worse than the usual uninspired Johnny. Never makes his guest laugh or feel comfortable, or even interacts with him much. Has no angle at all: ie. "guess you're tired of the same old questions", "your fans weren't even born when you were a Beatle..." etc. Ultra lame and no chance for a good response. He was not as bad as Tom Snyder with Lennon though. Snyder established himself as "the squarest man on earth" and "utterly out of touch with today's youth", but at least he asked real questions. Carson? Not so much. His staff must get some blame for this. Maybe Carson watched the Snyder interview and was psyched out :^)
inkey2 ~ I bet you haven’t seen him in the Documentary Called = “The Winged Beatle” Boy That is some amazing footage & a must see for anyone that is a true fan of the Beatles. . .
@ inkey2. Johnny Carson was not a "lightweight" as an interviewer! He was a very good interviewer. It is just McCartney is a lousy interviewee! He just can't relax in a TV interview and be more revealing of himself. Letterman had the same difficult interview with McCartney on his "Late Show" when McCartney appeared on Letterman's show! Does that make David Letterman a "lightweight" interviewer? No, of course not! A person can be the world's best interviewer and still wouldn't be able to get some famous people to open up about themselves. Many famous people are just lousy interviewees. A perfect example was Jack Palance who was boring when he appeared on Bob Costas' late-night interview show on NBC during the 1980's. After the interview was over and the TV cameras were turned off, Palance proceeded to tell Costas some really interesting stories to which Costas replied, "Jack why didn't you tell these stories during the interview?".
Paul is gracious
Farley: "Re...Remember when you did...Abbey Road?....And the song...The End?...Where it said..."And in the end...the love you take...is...equal to the love...you make?"
Paul: "Yes."
Farley: "...Uh...Is that true?"
That was AWESOME!
Paul was always humble, self effacing and friendly
LOL! I just saw that about a week ago...Really funny :) Chris also interviewed about 6 or 7 other superstars. It was all in one show. EXCELLENT!!!!!
There is a story behind it. When the Beatles first came to America in 1964 they of course went onto the Ed Sullivan show, who at that time was much bigger than Johnny Carson. Sometime later, John and Paul went on The Tonight Show without George and Ringo. Because they made their big splash on someone else's show, Johnny booked them on a night when Joe Garagiola was the guest host. They resented that. Paul only appeared on Johnny only once or twice more and refused to play any music.
Awesome!!!!!
P.i.D . .
It is difficult to comprehend that the man sitting in this chair could not leave his house in 1964, 1974, 1984 -when this interview was conducted - and today, 2023, without causing mass hysteria, I mean people FREAKING OUT, showering him with love for the hours of aural pleasure he and his mates gave us during that wonderful period of 1963-70. (Not to take away from Wings and solo Macca) God bless our Paulie! FABS4EVER! 💚
1,000th viewer! Love Johnny and Paul!
Paul wasn't working with Johnny enough in this appearance.
Yes, Johnny was trying, Paul was being a little difficult.
Not to 'scotch at the myth', but Paul was never too exciting in interviews. John Lennon, on the other hand, was most engaging. Ringo too. George, sometimes. But they all seemed to do well, collectively, as The Beatles, even McCartney. Imho.
He didn’t need to. Paul ranks above Johnny.
Another Great Documentary About Paul McCartney is Called = “The Winged Beatle” it’s one of the best films about The Beatles to date. . & shows a side of Paul McCartney Never seen to the public before. .
In short a must see for any True Beatles fan. . . The Best Of British Youth culture ! ! ! *
John, Paul, George, and Ringo. Way too much talent for just one band. In any other band, George would have been the leader. The beatles Never before, and never again.
I hear you, but NEVER say NEVER. On a slow night, I saw a television special with co-workers about how all the networks went to 24/7 coverage of the Kennedy Assassination in 1963. Respected newsmen were saying how unusual that was, and how, in the age of cable, we would NEVER see anything like that again. I turned to my younger co-workers, and said that was just asking for some future trouble. About a year later, we got 9/11!
NEVER say NEVER... Eventually, some future social phenomena that rivals The Beatles will come along. It's only a matter of when.
I've always wondered what would have happened if Paul never met John and vice versa. It was a perfect combination.
@Shoshanna That's as clear as mud.
johnny was amazing
During his interview of Paul McCartney on "The Tonight Show" , Johnny Carson must have been thinking, "What in the world do I have to say to this guy to get him to relax and open up about himself so that the audience can get an idea of what he is all about as an individual?".
Paul is a sharp looking dude here.
A musical genius and a comic one.
It took another few decades for Paul to lower his guard in interview settings.
he was in a band from Liverpool
never heard of them
First I’ve heard of that. What were they called?
Uselessjoe ~ Yeah, That’s Right it was Billy pepper and the pepperpots ~ With The One & only Billy Shears . .
I listened to their version of she loves you it sounds nothing like Paul
Ryan Hannon ~ Yeah Right, He looks nothing like the original Paul if you Check Out a Video Called = “Paul is Dead/ Faul McCartney/ Plastic Macca On Waxe Radio w/Tina Foster. .
Her side by side photographic evidence in colour is some of best to date and clearly shows that we are looking at two completely different individuals. . . Sergeant Pepper Was the start of the new band and a funeral for the original Beatles. . .
I wish they'd have talked about Yoko. He as my favourite Beatle.
Wouldn’t it be great to have an interview with McCartney as a musician for musicians??? Asking every bit of things us musicians would really like to know about his art and NOT the celebrity persona.
Now you can watch McCartney 3,2,1 where he discusses his back catalogue with producer Rick Rubin. Fascinating stuff.
@@Lily_The_Pink972 cheers! I will look it up.
love the beatles
Especially love "Mr. Robison94", the geek with the cigarette......probably dead by now.
Paul did a brief tour of England with Wings in December 1979. His February 1980 tour of Japan was cancelled after the Tokyo pot bust. Other than a few charity appearances (Live Aid, Prince's Trust) and TV guest spots, Paul didn't play live again until his 1989-90 world tour.
I had a crush on him in the 80s, I was just a school kid.
at 2:00 I was singing A Day In A Life in my head
The interview needs Chris Farley
+JazzKeyboardist1 Remember when you were in the Beatles?
Julio Gomez..The Beatles were a hoax? coo coo cachoo
+JazzKeyboardist1 - Yeah, that was great.
So Paul "wasn't really dead?"
JazzK ~ No, He Just grew 4 inches, his feet changed from size 8 to size 9-5 , his eyes changed from chocolate brown to hazel, The parting on the Left is now a parting on the right & the mole next to his right nipple has disappeared. .
Not forgetting his earlobes , chin & Teeth . .
McCartney being an asshole? I am a retired tour and studio musician. I knew all of the Beatles. McCartney is one of the nicest people in the music business. This man personally pays all operating expenses for a hospital in a rural area near his farm. ALL EXPENSES! I have seen him send things to people in need without recognition and change people's lives while demanding no one know who made it possible. Remove the cleff from your sign in, you have no idea what it means to be a successful musician with the power to change lives. Perhaps there is an asshole here, but it is not my friend, Paul.
Wonderful post, thank you! CZcams is rife with nasty little peckerwoods and it's great to see someone stand up to them with real first-hand experience.
+musicguy1100 Clearly you've never read the book BLACKBIRD.
relicofgold
Care to fill us in on what that's about?
It is a bio of Paul's career, warts and all. He was a jerk to his Wings people and the ultimate tightfisted tightwad. A good read if you want a balanced view of Maccy.
+relicofgold But before that there was the real Paul ... who was warm and charismatic,
I still have the entire show.. Am planning to only put on Paul. Don't know if the You tube censors will let me include the music. just need the time to make the video. Running late now. Will do a test run with the music an I might have to cut it.. Will see when I get that far. Working on Harrison Tribute first
Its Paul being Paul, take it or shake it.
Pauls about 40 here. Looks great.
Paul learned to do interviews over time.
Paul Mccarthy very handsome man. My brother looks like him.
Audience: (cheers)
Paul: (finger to lips)
Adience:
Paul:cute dead cold eyes ^-^
Marianna Adams ~ Yeah, Dead Cold eyes. . . Check out the The Documentary Called “The Winged Beatle” all the Answers Are iN There. . . The Rotten Apple Series is also well worth a look 👀. .
Paul looks great in blue. I think it's his color. He should avoid white shirts.
Billy don’t look to bad either. .
I grew up with Paul and that may be the most handsome and best dressed I've ever seen him.
@ Lisa K. -- Wasn't it Robert Redford, not a bad-looking chap, either, who said a man's face isn't interesting until he's in his 40s and Life's etched a bit of character in it? Which is why I'm so drop-dead gorgeous now--I've already scooted WAY past my 40s. Life's etched all kinds of things into me.
+John R. Fogarty I'll bet Robert Redford said that on his fortieth birthday. Crying into the mirror.
Sure wish i could run across the entire special night. My video copy from that actual night is not the best quality.
What year was this? Around 1984?
There just MIGHT be something to the theory that Paul still held some resentment that, years ago, he and Lennon were booked on the Tonight Show (plugging the newly-formed Apple in 1968) on a night when Johnny was absent, and had to appear with a lackluster substitute host (Joe Garagiola) instead. Other than that, maybe they were both having an "off" night - Carson is vamping with his staff-provided talking ponts, and McCartney doesn't help matters much - he looks bored.
nice
anyone know where part 1 is?????
LOL Paul
"Do you still compose? Do you still like to sit down and write?" . Uhhhh yeah? Johnny wasn't thinking there.
Watch his 2010 interview with Letterman, the same relaxed appearance.
This looks like it may be Paul plugging, 'Give My Regards To Broadstreet'. If so, it's from a 1986 appearance, not '84.
Broadstreet WAS 1984. PRESS TO PLAY came out in 86.
Now he has fans who are grandchildren of the his former fans :D

Well i tried to download the show with the movie promo and cut out Mary Gross and the Magician. Guess what happened. It was blocked globally. So i am going to try just using Paul's Interview and cut out the music. Sure wish i could figure out You Tube's double standard. Some seem to be able to post anything. I just don't get it. Paul didn't look too interested in being there ... Johnny tried his best as always ! Let's remember, Johnny was from the pre-Beatles Elvis era of Frank Sinatra .......
The one & only Billy Shears ? ? ? *!
Why do people wanna believe he's an asshole? He's perfectly polite and charming!!
Johnny seems to be really shy in front on Paul, he’s also playing with his hands and talking to him like a distant cousin lol
There's another theory I've been smoking. lol
Do you still compose? C'mon Johnny!!
+brugglesby To which Paul should have replied, Do you still host a talk show?
Which Carson would say Yes and laugh his ass off. He was the best. There hasn't been ANYONE who has topped him since.
McCartney hasn't written anything interesting in decades.... Carson was right to ask!
FreeSociety1 He didn't ask him if he was still composing well.
+FreeSociety1 that's rubbish
Ouch!
Ringo was the fun beetle
i think he's playing around with johnny.
He was only 42 years old here.
I was admiring Paul's boots when I suddenly realised how wrinkled his pants were. Jeez, Paul. Don't they have a trouser press in your penthouse?
Here's a question never asked: "Why do you think Mark Chapman didn't shoot Yoko while he was at it?"
Why would Johnny repeat a question stupidly asked by Joe Garagiola in 1968?
do you miss the Frantic Years?
No, I will meet heather Mills soon
LOL.. I bet Sir Paul Twists and Shouts realizing he has a child with Heather Mills?... And which restaurant is Heather Mills favorite? IHOP?
wow... lot of tension between these two... whats going on there?
Paul you`re suppose to promote your movie. Johnny didn`t invite on the show to cut the chops.
Somebody gave Paul a nervous hair cut that week. If you look closely one side lock is shorter than the other especially if you pause at 1.46.
i like Faul anyway ... and we all know that but it's OK, William is also a Genius, no matter what
Go to hell with that stupid rumor.
Pfffff not again!!!!!!!!
i remember ...more like 85 or 86 at least , love both dearly ... however i thought paul could have been a little more grounded .. .. you know what i mean .
Where's the Walrus?
Gary N ~ the walrus is Dead
The next day, Paul had some veiled regrets about doing The Tonight Show (though he doesn't actually say that): "We were a bit nervous with each other. He stuck it to me, Johnny. What do you call it, sandbagging? I love it! Cheeky boy. I enjoyed Johnny, he's an American institution."
It's pretty obvious to me at least that Carson didn't like McCartney, or resented him, or had no use for druggies as he thought McCartney to be, or something. His January 1980 monologue about Paul's drug bust is legendary, look it up on here. As for Paul, he was infamous for not giving anything to an interview he didn't want to do, and that appears to be the case here.
James I'm sure Carson knew he was talking to the imposter Faul
@@troyannbladsacker1811 I only found out about this recently. Is the real Paul, John halliday?
@@j.sherlock7213 Imo he is not. He is much shorter than bio Paul. I believe the imposter is William Campbell or Shepherd or he also was called Billy Shears. Check out his intro into the Beatles in Sergeant Peppers. Let me introduce to you the one and only Billy Shears. Listen to Mike Williams. Lots of good info. Glad more people are finally seeing the truth.
Paul did not make it easy for Johnny.
Paul McCoolguy
Yeah, Carson had a few inane questions in this clip. "What haven't you been asked?" Really? What an absurd question. He obviously didn't really show Paul much respect by not bothering to think of some interesting questions.
"Do you still compose, write songs?" Yeah John, I write my own material, (that is kinda the main reason why I'm here, d'ya think?)
Johnny seems a bit intimidated.
Terry you need to look a little deeper. Paul/Faul is very likely a illuminati and Carson is just a average Mason
@@randyjohnson6845 Ohhh please!!! Not the 'Paul is dead' bit again. Gimme a break! Some conspiracy theories just never die.

That is one sexy, handsome, confident man. Actually two, sexy, handsome, confident men. Love them both so much.
talk about absolutely no chemistry at all......whew, kind of hard to watch.
hahaha.
it sounds like he didn't really wanted to be interviewed at the time. he does not like interviewers nicking at him (not that johnny was an ass, i thought they did very well together.)
