stream trout fishing basics Its raining trout

  • Yesterday I went spinning for trout in one of my favourite small streams. What an AWESOME afternoon I had!
    I filmed this video, stream trout basics in the hope that many other people can learn a few tips and pointers, to ensure they can catch trout in small streams as easily as possible.
    Stream trout basics isn't technically perfect, but the action was red hot and the fishing was just insane.
    If nothing else, stream trout basics should help you find inspiration to get back out there fishing in streams and catching plenty of trout.

    I've known this bloke for 40yrs & if there is one constant about him its his fishing message. As he dragged me up tiny streams, over grown with blackberries or ducking under fallen trees, his fishing tips have always been the same and as I result, even I caught the odd trout. Great video my friend, keep them coming.

    The reason i think you lost that fish when it jumped you did not (bow to the fish) what that means is when a fish jumps out of the water and then renters the water the pressure the fish puts onto the line plus current is greater often than the line can hold. By lowering your rod tip as the fish renters the water the pressure is not so great and you will retain more fish. it is the one of 2 circumstances when you must lower your rod tip.
    The second circumstance is when you have a big fish on, in a fast river, the fish is heading downstream at a rapid pace, you cant follow it along the bank, you are loosing your line, there is not much line left on your reel and you are in danger of being spooled, take your rod or pole submerge in to the water and hold it there wait and watch the fish will stop taking line and turn around and start swimming back down stream try to remember this if you ever hook the fish of a life time and your breaking strain is way to light,

    got a big 5lb brown today which got super tired out and wasn't wanting to swim at all, so I went to swim him. He still wasnt kicking. I then ran with him over to some shallower faster water which was quite cold. I held him face into current in that for a couple of minutes until he started kicking a little. When I let him go he was turning sideways and giving up to the current so I grabbed him just before he was swept away. Then I took him 5 meters upstream to some cold yet 1ft deep water and got on my knees and sat there for a good 5 mins swimming him slowly. Then when he kicked a little harder I let go and he sat there of his own accord. I figured he would be ok to catch his breath on his own at that point and went to sort out my gear I left downstream. When I came back he was still in the same spot just chilling, and as he saw me out of the corner of his eye he immediately powered off into the deep with speed. Goes to show guys, dont give up on fish just because they are seeming like giving up, just get them facing into some current with plentiful oxygen and persevere, they will make it! This guy was hooked with a single hook in the corner of the lips.

    Interesting. Never heard of casting upstream. Must be a Euro. thing. Here in Canada we always work our way downstream using the current to spin the lure. Still, you caught a few so it's all good.

    • @darrend5741
      @darrend5741 Před 5 lety

      Fishing up and downstream both work well on the US West coast (LA all the way up to Seattle). If walking/casting downstream, avoiding disturbance of the water is VERY important, but possible. I agree with Gord235, casting downstream allows for a slow lure retrieval with a very fast blade speed. This drives the trout nuts and a bite is inevitable. So incredibly effective! I perfer a hybrid approach of walking upstream, and casting slightly behind me and sometimes ahead of me. It's the best of both approaches that serves me very well! Love the vid!!

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 5 lety

      Thanks fellas. I think casting downstream might be a really good idea in very wide rivers with lots of water buy unfortunately we fo not have too many rivers like that here in Australia.

      robbiefishing ok cool. I find it hard to reel when casting up stream. I think my lure is flopping around instead of the feeling that the spinner gives you when it's working properly. Should you reel really fast or is it a nice smooth reel action. And if so. If I feel like I'm reeling to fast. Then perhaps the water is to fast ???
      Also it's incredible how good you are at catching trout!
      Oh yea. If you choose braided line would you use mono or fluorocarbon as your leader?

    As an American living in Ballarat, I am loving trout fishing, but can't catch as many as I'd like. I've caught ONE in Wendouree... I am always eager to find decent places in Victoria so.... would you be able to msg me or post some of your favourite spots around the Ballarat region? Also, what gear/setup are you using? 2-4kg?
    Cheers

    It's better to drop them back because it keeps them from getting sediment in there gills when you release them the other way all that dirt sediment gets kicked up from them swimming off gets in the gills suffocate them

    Wow thanks for the video! i was just introduced to spinner fishing. it doesnt look like you put any bait on it, is that right?
    the person that showed me the spinners used a worm and a powerbait floating egg with the spinner. is that a good idea?
    also, i'm fishing in a much bigger river.

      Gareth Hodgson A decent fisherman can master all the arts. It all depends what you fish for. If you fish for bragging rights then fly fishing is your best option because it's the hardest form to master. Of you're fishing just to spend time in the bush and relax, you might prefer lure fishing. If you just want to sit in a chair by a stream then perhaps bait fishing is the best option.
      If you're happy sticking to one firm of fishing thays fine. I won't criticise you....I'm not like that! I just love fishing for everything going that it has to offer.

    You lost me at cast upstream with a spinner. Then I saw you toss the fish in the water because you couldn't be bothered to bend over and gently release it.

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 5 lety

      Nothing to do with not being bothered, that's just you making an assumption. I have a bad back and only band over when I have to. Anyhow, trout swim off waterfalls and survive so I'm sure me dropping it a couple of feet won't hurt it.

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 5 lety

      As for casting upstream, where do you suppose I cast? Back down into the water in which I just walked and stirred up? Up into the trees? Into the paddocks?
