  • Recorded by Cheney Otis and Eric Thompson at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles, CA on August 31, 1962. Features Carter Stanley, Ralph Stanley, Curley Lambert, Vernon Derrick and Roger Bush. This performance, minus the reprise, was issued on the album “The Legendary Stanley Brothers: Recorded Live: Vol. 2” (Rebel SLP 1495, 1970). Song is traditional (related to the songs “I’m Nine Hundred Miles From Home” and “Old Ruben”). This version based on recordings by Henry Whitter & G. B. Grayson, first issued as “Train 45” (Gennett 6320, 1928) with a second version issued as by Grayson and Whitter as “Train Forty-Five” (Victor 21189, 1928).

    Well i done left ; this here done me in. Keep tossing love sugario hearts. On down the road shine moon bottle and i am 4000 miles frommy home kind ladies and gents. I even have molasses stains and all of it ....!!!!!!

      This is my absolute favorite rendition of Train 45 - the tempo and Carter's vocal bring out a surprising depth of feeling missing in the faster performances by others. J D Crowe's supersonic rendition is a different animal altogether - no feeling, just impressive notes. Sad to say, Carter sounds drunk. He was dead of alcoholism four years later in 1966.
