When I was a kid around 10 or 12 I and another boy spent about 45 minutes alone behind a stage with Joe E. Ross when he visited Lewiston, Maine. Got his autograph, too. He was so kind and sweet and entertaining. There had been a small turn out of children but am glad I stayed behind.

The pet shop scene at 18:00 is one of the all-time funniest tv scenes I have ever enjoyed watching! Absolutely solid gold laughs, and the camera focusing on each parrot (mynah bird, etc.) makes it that much funnier in hearing each one repeat the episode title: "I Hate Captain Block!" And then the great switch at 24:47 with the parrot then saying/teaching the others to exclaim: "I Hate Gunther Toody!"

    Pippykins,
I am thrilled at having found these shows.
I was born in 1960. I was raised on shows like this. These shows take me back to when I would get to visit with my Gram and her sisters.
I want to subscribe to you, but I don't know how much it costs. I am afraid I'll get myself in a mess.
I don't really have anyone I can turn to for advice.
I feel like I'm cheating you by not subscribing. I really love these shows.

Please, if there is anyway you can tell me what a subscription costs, I will be very grateful.

So did Lewis, actually. He loved Gwynne and he loved being on the Munsters, but he always maintained that the writing on Car 54 was better.
The trouble was demographics. For a show to get really big it had to appeal to us baby boomers. We were too young to “get” Car 54, but the Munsters hit us just right.

Notice how Toody flubs on the line "Lincoln's Gettysburg Address" at around 10:37. This series is really so good. Hard to understand why it lasted only 2 yrs. I think it's the only series that comes close to absurd comedy. It also makes uses of the snowball device so common in the old Laurel & Hardy shorts (Big Business, etc.). Nat Hiken was really a genius. I can't understand why the later Munsters with this pair has become more popular. Unfortunately thus far episodes are not available for that series (only a few features), but from I've seen in the features and clips it doesn't compare to this series. Hiken of course had nothing to do with Munsters. Incidentally, so many actors here became alums, including Ross, Gwynne, Al Lewish, Charlotte Rae & Toody's wife came from the Bilko show as did Ross (even Gwynne appeared twice in Bilko.

“Car 54” was brilliant. Nate Hiken was a genius and there was no end of brilliant ideas in sight. But NBC got too greedy while negotiating for a third season too late for Nate Hiken to go to the other networks. So Season 3 got canceled before it could begin.
“The Munsters” aired on September 1964 on CBS and also lasted for two seasons, followed by a feature movie “Munster Go Home” In 1966.
According to Al Lewis and Fred Gwynn, “The Munsters” was already running out of fresh material, old gags were being repeated and they were using scripts that had previously been rejected during the first season.

Hard to believe this series didn't get re-newed for a 3rd season! What was the network thinking? Surely not the ratings,i've heard they were good for both seasons. Anyone know why it was so unfairly axed after 2 years?

the show died because its creator Nat Hiken died. many of the cast believe it was Joe E Ross (Toody) that gave him the heart attack!

@@josephlaperuta1124 Hiken died in 68, after the show was already off of the air, so?

    • @michaelmckenna6464
      @michaelmckenna6464 Před 5 lety +1

The main problem was that NBC had a hit and knew it. So the network got too greedy, demanding a larger share of the profits and Nate Hiken refused to accept the conditions.
But by then, it was too late to negotiate with the other networks. So the series died right there.

I have a similar parrot…a Yellow Naped Amazon…who talks like crazy, 3 years old.
I forgot all about this episode, but now, I’m going to try and teach him to say…
    “I hate Captain Block!”
