As someone familiar with fake fur and how insanely bad that is for the environment (and anyone inhaling it) using existing animal fiber seems very ethical. Ash turned out fantastic! Great work as always !!!
I think it's mainly that using real fur goes against the film's morals. How can we watch this film and listen to what it's saying when the puppets are literal foxes skin being posed. I think it's maybe fine but using wool could have worked, at least they didn't buy new. I'm also against most taxidermy though as I think it's disrespectful to the animal.
Well, if we want to be environmental friendly, we need to use sheep or llama wool (or others). Because getting it doesn't harm animals.
Cause if you mean to kill a real fox for the sake of some doll, then it's absolutely unacceptable😠
Both the ppl above me need to chill
@@user-bk1kt6ee5wThey seem pretty chill to me
@@oogyboofI think taxidermy when it comes to insects and ethically passed birds is somewhat okay as long as it is treated with respect. Mammals is a bit of a tougher one. If the animal died of natural causes, sure. But usually when an animal dies of natural causes, the pelt wouldn’t be good enough quality to taxidermy. Hunting is definitely an iffy thing, but if the meat is completely used up and then the animal is taxidermied with respect I can somewhat understand that. I don’t understand trophy hunting nor taxidermy when it comes to pets. It just depends on the person.
Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of my favorite movies! What a delight to see two of my favorite things come together!!
@@ville__huh r u ok?😂
@@ville__sir this is a wendy's
As a person who dives into vulture culture and taxidermy, I think as long as Wes ethically sourced the animal fur from already existing products/humanely euthanised animals, but also, I haven't really found much online about Anderson using animal fur on his puppets?? Maybe I'm not typing in the right stuff, but even just looking up 'did wes anderson use real animal fur on his puppets for fantastic mr. fox?' comes up with like, just one article.. So maybe he wasn't rlly using animal fur on his puppets?? :(
I agree! He was repurposing things that already existed. He didn’t buy raw fur or anything of the like, he just found things that already existed and gave them new life.
I think too many people don’t understand that fur and animal products can be sourced ethically. Yes it was made from real fur but Anderson didn’t actually kill any of the animals. Honestly, it’s likely that fur would have ended up in the trash.
Which is where the fur would have gone initially if humans hadn't taken it, ethical or not. Nothing wrong with letting the fur go either.
my question is: was it his idea to use repurposed hair or was it the artists involved that chose this since they are quoted in saying that Wes's decision didnt sit right with them, so they looked at more ethical ways to achieve the look Wes demanded? Bc the way the quote is, it sounds like using used fur was not up to Wes. Wes just wanted the aesthetic.
@@hotwaterisspicy yeah!! that's what i was thinking too tbh!!
The artist themselves cant make the decision at the end since they have to get it approved by the director and producer so i assume they came up with ideas, went to anderson with the ideas and thats how they were able to get repurposed fur.
Her hair omg!!? How is no one talking about it 😭
I literally shouted omg her hair 😂 my dog got so confused 💀💀
I thought she looked different lol.
Idk I just didn't pay attention to her appearance at all. I just focused on her artistic project
This movie has been a comfort film of mine since I was a child I always felt so seen by Ash as someone who is neurodivergent, possibly autistic, and also has a learning disability so when Ash and his mom has that talk about being different in the sewers I felt so seen you did Ash so much justice Etellan he looks absolutely amazingly
As someone who also has autism I totally know how u feel!!
@@realname6857 SEE YOU GET ME
@@ville__ Are you okay in life? Mentally? Physically? In general?
im so sorry that first reply had to be the first reply you got to this comment. 💔 Me too! i’m autistic, and i love ash and the movie. 😊
Same here!! The movies v good at portraying that experience. Sorry that *that* had to be the first reply, youre not alone here
Ash is one of those characters that I forget exists, but when I remember them, it's just immediate love and appreciation for them. Ash is such a good study on growing up and being a weirdo. Great doll, as always.
I was always under the assumption that those were red grapes on his carton? I've actually never had a purple grape, just green and red, but I suppose the availability of certain varieties is different everywhere. About the sourcing of hair - the way they handled it for the movie sounds very safe, repurposing vintage items is always better than finding new things. The way you found material also sounds like a great solution. I totally get why Wes Anderson would have wanted real animal hair, and I don't think he intended to be harmful, but maybe he could have communicated with his dollmakers more about sourcing so he didn't sound as suspicious, haha! Amazing video as always! They're always so calming, and the artwork is beautiful. Thank you for making one of my favorite characters look so lively and colorful!
I agree with the fur issue, if he repurposed found items like coats I don't see a problem. Only if he was actively hiring hunters to get him fur would there be an ethical issue in my mind. And fun fact, the juice box might show apples as a little wink to grape juice mostly being made with apple juice! Apple juice works really well as a "base" juice, so a lot of "100% Pure Juice" uses it as a base, it helps with flavor of some fruits and to stretch the juice they're making, like grape juice. Pear juice also works like that. They can still call it 100% juice, and "no sugar added", since technically they're not actually wrong lol.
@@SharauniThat’s actually really interesting! I always wondered why a lot of juice cartons would say “100% fresh orange juice” but then you look at ingredients and there’s at least 20% apple juice 😂 I suppose the wording is the loophole, like you said. Same seems to happen with smoothies, a pineapple, coconut and banana smoothie that I like to purchase sometimes also contains apple, strawberry and orange!
Concord grapes are more of a purple grape ! 😊
i think you're right, about the grape juice. It's red grapes & the one that's cut in half is DEFINITELY a red grape cut in half if you look it up :)
Welcome back!!!
To answer your question about how ethical it is and how I feel about it...personally find it okey if they truly just repurposed preexisting material and even used their own hair xd
If it was from animals that would've been killed for the sole purpose of creating these masterpieces I would've been against it.
Agreed! Synthetic furs/yarns are also just plastic lmao and when crafting with them you inevitably get it everywhere and it contributes to microplastic pollution (as well as the energy/resources it takes to make the fibers, like i doubt they're using solar panels at their factories lol) Which isn't to say there arent more ethical ways to use synthetic fibers, like buying second hand or harvesting it from an old costume, just that there's ethical dilemmas any which way you do it. And whichever one is Most Correct is gonna depend on who you ask. The same can be said for if it's even something an individual should feel responsible for in the first place.
(edit: At the end of the day? Real fur/leather/etc is always biodegradable.)
Seriously? You all think it's okay to kill animals just for dolls? It's totally unethical that's disgusting. F@ck the masterpieces made this way. The real animal is masterpiece: beautiful and alive.
Maybe the art for which someone's life is sacrificed is wrong? Maybe we don't need such dolls then? The base of the doll is made of plastic, isn't that bad? Make it out of clay then.
Like, "oh no, fake fur is harmful! Let's do even more damage by killing a bunch of animals". Wow.
Killing animals for fun and entertainments is something that should be left in the deep past.
If we really wanna be eco friendly we can use the fake fur made of sheep, goats, llamas
Exactly. Pre-existing fur and pelts is completely fine, especially if sourced ethically (from natural deaths). Farming for fur and killing for fur is an absolute no-no.
@@ghoultooth I'd like to add that I think sourcing fur from euthanised animals is OK. For example if the animal had a terrible disease and got euthanised, I think it's ok for its fur to be used. No euthanasia for the sake of just using the fur, though. That's just sick
Gnawing on the table shaking the bars of my enclosure this is SO good
I love this comment
Such a cute doll. owo
Also. The Fur thing.
Since the Fur was Repurposed from other things instead of being made for this purpose, i see 0 issues with it. They also never went to source new fur if they needed a specific color, they instead used their own hair. There's no harm in it.
But regardless of the dilemma. Ethically Sourced Fur is still technically better for the environment compared to Plastic Fibers unfortunately. Cheap Plastic Fibers aren't Biodegradable, which just adds to the Harm of the Planet, during and after the creation of it, but not everyone has the money to buy the Safe, Biodegradable Plastic Fibers, so, this will always happen.
I digress. Repurposed Fur is always a good thing imo, because it already happened and no new animal was harmed for the project, along with no plastic fibers that are bad for the environment and peoples lungs when loose fibers fly around were being used either.
I had to get raw alpaca hair from a local farmer for a werewolf baby doll and I just straight up told the farmer what I was going to do with it. She was delighted! You'd be surprised how much fun telling people about your uncommon hobbies can be. 😊
They used real animal fur for the puppets? That's genius!!! It deepens the message of the movie, it makes the puppets more real, it connects the character's struggles to real world struggles!
im not sure how it deepens the message of the movie for Wes to choose to do what the villain of the film was doing. Wes wanted it for the aesthetic and the puppeteers found a more ethical solution bc the request didnt sit right with them.
Very much the opposite unless with "deepening the message" you mean that humans are cruel and irresponsible towards other living beings..
@@neonice Then you have an extrenely surface level view of using animal products. Roadkill exists, zoo animals naturally passing or passing due to medical needs exist, there is nothong wrong with using parts of these animals for art.
@@hotwaterisspicyWes Anderson used a previously manufactured fur coat to create living figures. You are so blind. You’re the kind of person that shouldn’t be allowed to view art because of how poorly you interpret it. Please try using your brain more often.
@@k9_kadaver you're missing the original point here. of course animals dying of natural causes exist. but that wasnt the message wes anderson was making, nor was it how the OP of this thread is saying. Wes liked the aesthetic of animal fur and the puppeteers were tasked with making it happen. they found the ethical solution. Not Wes. Wes was just focused on making his film look the way he wanted, regardless of the ethical implications of it. And animals dying of natural causes does not negate that humans are cruel and irresponsible towards other beings (and fellow humans) both those things can be and are true.
Welcome back Etellan, hope you are doing ok. Ash from Fantastic Mr. Fox looks amazing. I wonder if your going to continue the Monster High revamp series, see you next time.
Omg, literally screamed at the sight of this, favourite movie , favourite character. Great job :)
Aw Ash I love him! This is such a gorgeous piece!
Also, I have the opposite opinion about the fur usage actually!
Using existing furs is a way to give them a second life. Bring actual life to something that was long dead. It's sad that animals were killed for the furs... But what makes it even sadder? If these furs are just destroyed. They would have been killed for nothing. This is a beautiful way to pay hommage and not just let deaths be wasted.
I think reusing and upcycling animal fur is quite a sustainable choice, not to mention that we are already living in so much plastic, no need to make new when you can reuse some coat, that's eaten by moths or like you said, shaven furs and hair
It's not like creators of the movie specifically hunted down some foxes for that (or commissioned so)
Taxidermy also exists and can be ethical too, so, idk
So very very excited to see an etellan upload
It's lovely to see you! You've been missed. This project was quite a challenging endeavor, but you persevered. Fantic little fox.😚🧡🦊
It turned out amazing, you can definitely see the love that went in ❤
7:53 also, the little Stephanie Cameo 😂
I don't think I've ever been this early to something in my life - so excited to watch this!! Fantastic Mr. Fox is probably my favourite film of all time and your work always makes me so happy 🥰
Best crossover ever
I just watched this movie again with my little brother, and he loved so much that he’s reading the book. I’ve always been fascinated with the art of claymation, and Fantastic Mr. Fox in particular, I’m so happy to see your interpretation of it ❤
Welcome back Etellan! Your Ash from Fantastic Mr. Fox is so stinking cute! I love hearing the little facts you put in your videos. I had no idea the puppets in the movie were made of real animal fur! I always thought the fur movement in the movie was so unique and thought it was cool because to me it almost looked like there was a wind breeze which brought more life to the characters.
Oh my gosh I missed you! This just made my day!!! ❤
I’ve been making dolls for over 30 years. I never have a problem telling vendors what I’m using their products for. Amazingly a lot of them don’t freak out.
this might just be my favourite doll created on youtube. this is truly incredible. the little cardigan is so cute and you can tell how much care you took into his fur. 💕
the scream i let out as soon as i saw the thumbnail!! not only is my favorite doll painter back, but she's making one of my favorite characters in my comfort film!! gosh 8 months is no joke, all that love and effort definitely shined through, and i would have watched an even longer video detailing the process of making Ash!! you've definitely outdone yourself once again, and this video was very much worth the wait!! 💖💖💖
How ironic, I've been subscribed to this channel for 3-ish years, and around the same time you started working on this project I watched fantastic mr. fox for the first time and had it become one of my favorite movies ever, the wait was worth it 🙏🙏🙏
I'm convinced Wes Anderson would sell his own mother for the perfect shot 🙌🤣
7:56 yooo rotten mango fan spotted!! Seriously though, Ash looks so amazing!! He looks so tiny omg, this might have inspired me to watch Fantastic Mr. Fox for the first time
Oh my goodness this is so beautiful I think hand placing the fur gave it such an amazing unique effect. Your dolls always have such breathtaking craftsmanship and detail and it really shows in this doll.
You call it pedantic, I call it discerning. A really great rendering of this character; very obviously someone you can identify with.
Welcome back, etellan~ I am so excited to see your process and the wonderful results at the end~
It might have been a very arduous way of adding the fur, but it translates your style so well! Like I didn’t think it would get your art style so well but you did it!
Also when the artist said they used their own hair: it sounds like they did that and lied to Anderson being like “yeah we used animals 👀” cuz humans are technically animals.
this is by far my favourite doll youve ever made. the thought and artistry and detail you put into it is amazing. this makes me even more excited for any other project you tackle in the future
He looks perfect! Thanks for not giving up on this project!
I’ve missed your video’s so much! they’re so calming and your intricacy with your art is so beautiful to watch (this doll is no exception). i love this movie sooo much so this doll is just even cooler to me
My mom was friends with the Anderson brothers in college, she said they were very nice and tbh I think they would love this and your entire style :))
This is absurd. She nailed the vibe. LOVE the choice and the fur is incredible. This doll has a soul.
Your dolls are just gorgeous, I love them so much! And you doing Ash is so cool and just perfect, I love it
What really blew me away is how you managed to ethically reproduce such authentic and similar looking fur. I can see there were many deeply challenging areas and learning curves, but the experience you gained here is unique and massive and your ingenuity in every part of the process was deeply impressive. This was fascinating, educational, fun and to me very engaging and funny and you cant argue with the beauty of the result. Bow to your skill for sure. All you learned here was well worth 8 months.
What an absolutely incredible doll! I can see why it took so long to complete. Outstanding! As for the ethical issue of using animal fur, I don't quite see the problem if the material was taken from second hand items of clothing. It's not contributing to violence or cruelty, I think of it more as recycling. Advocacy against animal cruelty is something I'm also passionate about. At risk of sounding militant, I think the best way to help them is to stop eating them... Again, the doll is beautiful. I'm a huge etellan fan. Keep creating. ❤❤❤
You could have easily given up and never let this project see the light of day but you didn’t. You spent an incredible amount of time and patience on this and it shows. You are so inspiring!!
He looks so precious I love him

Your videos always are so incredibly soothing - from your voice, to the songs you pick, and even the gentle and careful way you work. I'm not in my best place mentally and I broke into tears several times watching this video, but by the end of it I felt so much relief and peace. I’m so happy and excited to watch this!!
This turned out really awesome! All that hard work really paid off in my opinion!
