Tip #11: There is no shame in turning around if you do not feel comfortable with the situation.
Offroading can be overwhelming if you're new to it, and it can be hard to be the one to turn around or skip a part of a track if you're driving with friends. But thats ok. Panel damage suuuuuuuuucks!

Excellent. A couple more... When dropping down a steep hill and your Jeep dips causing you to fear a rollover, do not stab the brakes BUT turn in the direction of the dip. It's counterintuitive, but realize when your wheel makes contact and your rear is in the air, the jeep will drive in that direction as opposed to the wheel turned harshly to the opposite, aiding in the rollover as a "pivot point". If its too steep, gravity will win, however I'd rather be in this guy's jeep than a super high center of gravity, 4 inch lifted crawler.. The opposite is true for a steep hill climb with a sliding front end (turn opposite of the slide) if uncontrolled.
Always try and reach out to other jeepers I don't care if it's a wrangler X stripped to the bone. We all have the same problem, lack of wingman when wheelin. Even the so called clubs are somewhat stagnant for various reasons.
Never let someone else tell you where to drive or what to drive over. If you are not comfortable with it, Don't do it. They aren't going to help with the repair bill.
Lastly... Never rush. Think of it like golf.. Let the blowhard Super wheelers "play through". The true jeepers will help and encourage.

"When in doubt, check it out." I almost learnt that the hard way when I was 18 years old and blasting on the scrambler on a Sunday afternoon. I was charging towards a big soil bank with the idea of jumping over it. Just before I hit the bank the little voice said: Stop! Look! I did, and found that big bank was the excavations for a very, very deep hole.

All good tips and I hope everyone follows them. I am an old Jeeper and still do not have a much needed item you do, a winch. I would advise even newbies to get one. I had one on an older Jeep that I used on my farm/ranch and they are very handy even here in East Texas. I have done 4 wheeling in Co. so remember guys going up hill have the right of way. Be careful, go slow, be courteous/helpful and have a good time. Joining a local will help you a WHOLE lot as you never know when you'll need help on the trail.

These are good tips. As someone who also wheels a stock jku sport, I got some tips from other people when i go with the forums.
    1) use 4low on longer descends, it keeps you more in control of your speed. You use your breaks less, and it keeps your trans cooler.
    2) know what the traction control system can do.
bonus (learnt from my dad towing dirtbikes to riding spots behind 4x4's in a e30)
When you feel like you are starting to loose traction(and dont have tcs), you can pull up the hand break 2 or 3 clicks, and that will help fool the diff thinking the loose tire has traction.

If you're lucky, you wont be stuck pinned under something or bleeding... I guess it depends on how big those balls are.

    • @everettdurst1
      @everettdurst1 Před 7 lety +24

Fundamentalist American, I agree with you, but for a beginner, I have to agree with Bryan. Your experience, I would guess, has taught you to bring food and water, fire starting gear, and likely an array of self-recovery equipment. A beginner hasn't learned that yet.
I have wheeled alone for many decades, but I started out with friends and learned after many trips what I need to have in order to be self sufficient. I go overboard and have a 60" hi-lift, hand winch, bumper winch, 200+ feet of chains and cables, straps, on board air, full size shovel, axe, pick-axe, food, water, propane torch, cash, and a 45. And I keep rain gear and warm clothes in there year-round.
I do like being alone out there, and I accept the risks, but I minimize them. It is still best to have two rigs, but not always an option.

Pretty good list. I am not sure I would hook a winch line up to the back of my receiver. The hook should be secure and I just don't see a way to secure it to the back of the receiver.
Airing down is spot on except go lower. Like a lot of people have said, 15lbs is okay. It makes the ride smoother, gives you better traction AND makes it harder to pop the tire. Think of how much easier it is to pop a balloon that is full, same with tires.
You didn't mention being on designated trails. Everyone, please stay on the trails.

Oh just a couple of more things from wisdom. One, get a good trail rated snatch block. This simple doubles your pulling strength. I burned up 2 or 3 winch motors (Ramsey winch) trying to get the winch to do more than it was supposed to do, like pulling big tractors out of mud holes, winching bush hogs from over 100 yards away that were mired in mud and the like. Believe me, you can buy several good snatch blocks for what a winch motor cost. Two, if you do like to go alone, crazy, get an extra 100 feet of cable, you'll need it; from experience you gain wisdom.

Did he say "30psi" is the lowest he would go? Keep going bud, 20-15 psi. I used to run 12 in the back and 15 in the front on the beach and dunes.

When using a snatch strap always use a dampner in case something breaks nothing will come flying through a window.

so how do you go about this safely ? like have them full psi at the gas station and take it out once you’re off-road on a slope ? what about when you are done off roading and need full psi to get back on the road?

    • @richardkd3048

@@nelsonbelson4849 well I had a 12v compressor that I used to hook up to the battery. But recently upgraded to a twin ARB pump that I hard wired into my cab.
If you don't air down to go 4x4ing you need to rethink life haha

Get a shovel, and a real recovery kit, when off roading a shovel, high jack, traction mats, can be your best friend.
