- How to Copyright an Album of PUBLISHED works.... If you are looking for a tutorial on how to register groups of works that have NOT been published, please refer to the US Copyright Office's tutorial video here: • Group Registration of ...
If you wish to register your copyrights with the US Copyright Office for musical works that HAVE ALREADY BEEN PUBLISHED this is what you need to do:
Step 1- Create an account with the U.S. Copyright Office (free)
Step 2- Fill out a standard application for Sound Recording copyright registration.
When you enter the Author's information, make sure you tick the "Sound Recording" box and add "lyrics and music" in the "Other" box
Step 3- Submit your application and pay the fee ($65 if you're registering an album, as of March 20th, 2020)
Step 4- Follow the instructions you receive to finalize your application.
In the video above, I'm walking you through step 2 in detail. (Steps 1, 3 and 4 are super straight forward, you'll figure those out for sure!)

As of either march or April of 2021 the copyright office added a new category just for albums that allows up to 20 songs per registration PLUS allows album art work to be included. Sounds great, right? Remember in the video the lady warns to make sure you are getting sound recording protection AND lyric and music protection? Well, the new category created gives two choices: Music and lyrics OR sound recordings. Not both in one registration. Be careful that you are properly protected
Hi. What's the difference between music vs sound recording? Thanks
@@eLLBdotmusic music is A# Bb Em7 and recording is sound waves saved in a playable format.
Thank you for this comment. To be properly protected, you have to do BOTH.
****Everyone**** Please be aware that the rules have changed, as of March 15, 2019 with regard to registering "Multiple Works". In other words if you are registering more than one song you need to pay close attention, as the Copyright office has changed their procedure and no longer accepts the "Standard Application" for multiple works; instead they are using "Group Of Unpublished Works". If you attempt to register more than one song using the "Standard Application" you will pay $55, and they will only register 1 song. You can use the "Group Of Unpublished Works" to copyright up to 10 songs for that same $55. I know because I made this mistake and the government will not allow you or help you make this correction. I am now out $55.....
So how do I publish Multiple works that have been published already? I was assuming standard because the new option says for unpublished multiple works but my content is already published. Is this maybe the reason every time I attempt to move forward with multiple published work it’s only allowing me to put in one international standard number (isrc) that was confusing me because I have Multiple works so I will need to put in a isrc for each song
@@hoodmakertv1434 Honestly my best recommendation would be to call them directly, as their customer service is actually very, very good, and they can tell you what you need to do.
That is not correct according to their website. It specifically says you can use the standard application to register 1 collective work and an album of songs is a collective work as per their help pages. It sounds like you did something wrong when you filled in your information. copyright.gov/eco/help-collective-work.html
@@stevenleonmusic has anyone determined whether Destiny or Steven is correct in this instance? I'm having trouble confirming a definite answer.
@@jackkerwin744 I have an open case with the copyright office right now for my first album. Unfortunately it has been that way for 2 months and I suspect they have a huge backlog so I have no idea when I'll have an answer.
Thank you for your very helpful information Question what is the current fee and how many songs can you list for that same fee per year I have many
Yes I have a question: for the author sections; once we put “sound recording” and “other-music and lyrics” do we have to send the audio AND a music sheet (composition) of the song at the end of the copyright process? I don’t know if that makes sense
Did you ever find the answer to this question? I'd love to know too
Same here
So I'm copyrighting a album of 8 songs, two of the songs have featured artist, do I would still list just myself as the only author correct ??
Hello Joyce Im Mvice. Thank you for this video it was very heplful i just have one quick question im a recording artist i write my own lyrics but i buy beats with exclusive rights. So my question is when it comes down to copyrights when i register the s.r copyright is the beat also being copyrighted under my name or do i have to do that separate?
you would have to liscence rights for the beats your using first then copyright your songs. Hope this helps. : )
How do u right the acual lyrcis qritten
Hi everyone, Hi Joyce,
Thank you very much for the information, very helpful,
I will publish my own album, will try to do by myself, to the online platforms such as Spotify, Itunes, CZcams etc..
I live in London, for Copywriting, I was wondering if I do copywriting US Gov platform, does that protect my work globally or only in US, in that case do I need to do also in The UK as well,
One last question, is there any helpful information about self publishing for the online platforms?
I would be glad,
Thank you in advance...
Denis.
Hi Denis, as far as I know the Berne Convention means that if you register your music copyrights in the US, you're covered in the UK as well but I'm not a lawyer so you might want to ask the US Copyright Office directly.
Here are a couple of posts you'll find helpful about music copyright and self-releasing music to platforms like Spotify:

Should I use the label I own as the claimant? Should I just use my name? Or should I add both my name and label?
so being published means to have your album out? if i would put it out on distrokid i could do more than 10 songs on just one application?. and would it have to be the same day when you copyright it
@@creativeproductive2304 if i would want it to be published would i do it after?
I wrote a lot of poems and sent them in to get copyright....what happen if I lost them do the copyright office hold them
sound recording vs Performing arts difference?
Thanks what if some songs have instrumental brats & some don’t ? What if you only have lyrics for some with no melody yet ? Can you copyright song lyrics without audio. Is it a limit of 10 songs bs poetry books can have more than 10 poems right ? What if we are the writer and we bought commercial use of vocalist & beats instrumental don’t we hold the copyright ?
I guess it is completely changed. I do not see album name or the songs listed (shown at 2:06) on the copyright website. Frustrating
is there a limit of how many songs you can copyright under collective work. I would like to copy 30 songs under a collective work.
Can you pay the fee if you are a nom us citizen? I do not own a master/visa creditcard. Only debit card from eu.
Hi, where you added 'Lyrics and Music' in other...would you also add 'produced' if the person also produced the song?
@@creativeproductive2304 it was because when I previously registered a song a few years back using the sr form the copyright office said I could add producer because I produced the recording too.

Hi, You don't have to upload any audio file or lyrics?
Joyce Kettering does it work for Canada? I’m in Canada I wanna copyright my music to upload it to CZcams
@@FritzMadness Fritz Madness wrote, “…I’m in Canada I wanna copyright my music to upload it to CZcams”
If your musical work is being infringed in Canada, then it’s likely being infringed in the US and other in countries.
International copyright holders from Berne Convention signatory countries, including Canada, Germany, France, UK, and Australia, are NOT required to register their creative works (made outside the US) with the US Copyright Office (USCO) to have legal standing to pursue US-based copyright infringers in a United States federal court.
HOWEVER, without a “timely” copyright Certificate of Registration issued from the USCO (i.e., the work was NOT registered BEFORE the infringement occurs in the USA or WITHIN three-months of its first-publication in the US), Americans, Canadians, AND international artists can ONLY pursue actual damages (typically the missed licensing fee) plus the disgorgement of profits (if any!) against American-based infringers. Actual money damages are typically LOW fees, and as a rule, your attorney fees will likely out-strip any money award you receive from a US court or via out of court settlement, making it financially impractical to pursue money damages against US-based copyright infringers without having timely registered your musical works.
Americans, Canadians, and other creatives who “timely” register their works with the USCO (in this instance, either before publication or within five-years of first-publication), receive “presumptive proof” (prima facie evidence) that they have a valid copyright, and the facts stated in their copyright registration application (who’s the copyright author, copyright claimant, year of creation, year of first-publication, etc.) will be deemed valid, unless disproved (17 USC § 410: Registration of claim and issuance of certificate).
Canadians and other copyright music owners who choose NOT to timely register their copyright claims with the USCO (no presumptive proof granted), will have to prove the their creation and copyright ownership before proceeding to trial (timely registering your copyrights with the USCO takes care of that problem).
So, even if you’re out of Canada, you should(!) timely register your music compositions and sound-recordings with the USCO for the point I made. Watch just the first 20-seconds of this copyright attorney litigator video to better understand my points: czcams.com/video/cBOKkrleY3Y/video.html.
And you should NOT upload, share, publish, sell, post, or distribute your music to CZcams or elsewhere until your music has been registered with the USCO. If your works are UN-published, you can register up to ten compositions AND their ten corresponding sound-recordings for US$55 (Group Registration of Unpublished Works): czcams.com/video/eR14iSM4esQ/video.html Registering published works can be costly, as you might have to register each work for US$35. If applicable to you, you can also register up to 750 photographs in a single application for US$55 total (not US$55 for each image).
Here’s a great summary on why Canadians and international creatives really need to register their copyrights with the USCO; just change the word “companies” to “creatives”: donahue.com/resources/publications/copyrights-registered-u-s/
Great question
Whitney Terrell thanks, I wanna copyright a lil demo I’m still not sure about this

Do you include other collaborators if there are such?
It’s not super easy to understand that’s why we are here at your video lol.
The title of the video should be How to Copyright an Alum of UNPUBLISHED Works. You didn't show how to find the ISRC # for the album.
If you upload your album on the copyright site, do you ALSO need to mail it in? Or is "just uploading it" ok as well?
If you have an album with 17 songs can you copyright the music and lyrics all in one? Or does it need to be seperate lists? I'd appreciate some help God bless you🙏
According to DRVP comment(see above), you can up to 20 songs.
What did it cost you
Where do you actually insert the sound and lyrics?
I don't know about the lyrics but when I paid the fee there was an option to upload audio files.
So if the album is already published, you can add more than 10 songs? And if its unpublished, it cant be more than 10 songs?
Joyce Kettering is it unlimited songs or is there a cap?
Joyce Kettering you are right, its however much you can fit into a album. They just replied to my email. Thanks for the feedback tho. Much appreciated.
very informative appreciate you ❤️
Jesus Loves You
U DIDN'T SHOW HOW TO UPLOAD SONGS.
How much does it cost to Copyright a 14 song album?
The limit is ten songs unfortunately. 😔
Its also 85 dollars
