    • @maggiedk
      @maggiedk Před rokem +29

I totally agree with this on its own, but are people forgetting the way Sookie told him (not asked, told) he was getting a vasectomy? She sprung it on him right after having a baby when it was something they never discussed prior, then a nurse immediately came to take him to get the procedure. He said "they sent the big nurse" (a large man) and she joked "just in case," like, just in case he tried to fight it. And just so we're clear, this is also illegal and immoral.
Getting to make your own reproductive choices goes BOTH ways. It's not okay that she tried to force him to have a vasectomy, and it's not okay that he didn't tell her he didn't get it. I don't think it's fair to only put that on him when the idea of a life-changing procedure was basically forced on him.

I think if you’re talking about gaslighting, Dean is the gaslighter tm, whenever they fought he made her think it was her fault EVERYTIME, she was the one to apologize over and over even in instances were it was clearly him overreacting over simple stuff, that is gaslighting in my books. With Jess instead of fighting Rory would always just talk to a wall and then shove her feelings down and pretend everything was alright bc Jess was so emotionally unavailable. Now with Logan you fail to mention that whenever he felt like not running to Rory’s side the moment she felt like it is bc he was going through his own problems ( she is really self centered and feels her problems are the only important ones) when he doesn’t want to go to lanes baby shower is bc he just lost a huge amount of money and everything he was working on (if I remember correctly) he was dealing with rejection, disappointment, expectancies and failure and what did she do? Brushed it over and get upset bc he didn’t want to go to the baby party of her friend he doesn’t even know and probably wouldn’t be very involved bc it’s kind of a personal event idk I feel like the difference with Logan is that it’s a real relationship and more balanced where yeah they have disagreements but they work through them and for the first time we get instances where she is not always right which give her a more complex character than always being miss perfect never does anything wrong is the big victim of the whole charade

I actually like Jason, in regards to his flaws/quirks. I'll defend his character arc.Let's start with the separate bedroom. He had chronic insomnia. Which is why he slept in a different room. He was upfront and honest with Lorelai about that. In Regard to Richard, Richard is also toxic in that whole deal. Jason was screwed over by Richard and lost his career. Jason really trusted Richard and wanted the firm to work. Hence the lawsuit/ and income to figure out what he needed to do with his life. Understandable.
Regarding taking revenge on his Dad, Jason's Dad is a bonafide psychopath. The way he turned out is good based on his upbringing. Jason wanted to branch out and be on his own and his best shot was partnering with Richard. Jason's whole arc parallels Chandler arc on friends another character with a dysfunctional family background. He grows through his experiences.

The reason why I'm team Jess over Logan is because he grew and mature. He encourages Rory to be the better version of Rory while Logan didn't care if she was the wort version of herself as long as they were together.
A lot of people blame Emily and Richard for Rory's downfall but to me it was Logan influence and the world arround him she was obssesed with being part of his world. Emily and Richard always wanted Rory to be a journalist and encourage her academic success; they never wanted her to be in trouble or break the law.

But, we never actually see the evolution of Jess. He's horrible to Rory, shows up after over a year to beg her to run away with him. Then, the next we see him, he's suddenly settled down, successful, and supposedly knows Rory better than she knows herself. We never see that work or that connection growing. It's fan service for drama and not actual character growth.

Just in the same way we didn't see Rory's evolution from hard worker to entitled woman who doesn't have underwear, sleeps with a man already in a relationship and ignores the man she is actually dating.

Jason Digger was surprisingly my favourite fit for Lorelai. I thought they had a complementary sense of humour, they had the same upbringing, which led him to understand more than her other companions her difficult relationship with her parents (which is a huge part of Lorelai's life), he balanced her bubbly personality and she balanced his stiff one. I just was so sad that it went so wrong professionally with her dad because they were so good together. I feel like when there was a problem they would solve it so easily together and were really respectful of one another. I also think that, many years into a marriage, when you start to fall out of love and the passion fades, they would have developed something further that, a companionship that would replace it and make them last.
Also, he didn't treat her like a goddess who can do no wrong, it would have been good for her to have someone who makes her acknowledge certain behaviours of hers. I think they would have made each others be the best version of themselves without betraying who they really are.
I love Lorelai with Luke as well, but for myself I'd rather have the kind of relationship Lorelai and Jason had.
For Lane, obviously Dave. Lane and Dave would have been my favourite couple, and would they have made them the principal characters of the show, I would have been here for it.
For Rory, I thought Logan was the best fit. Same for Lorelai and Jason. They have the same upbringing, he doesn't treat her like a goddess of fairy, he helps her being more responsible and aware of who she is (the episode where he reminds her she is not from a poor upbringing and she had lots of privileges handed to her), he truly loves her AND appreciates her, it is not just passion. Like Jess, he has this passion for literature, and he could easily provide for her baby.
They really made sense together and bring the best from one another. Though, I have a sweet spot for Jess, and I love the way he matured. I just think he is too good for Rory now and deserves someone less egocentric. (I love Rory, I just think she is very main character, and I think Logan would appreciate that more, and that Jess could do better with someone more caring and empathetic) I mean, I never saw them discussing Jess's trauma. The abandonment, her mother's return like a flower as if nothing happened and that Jess overreacted... anything. They would only talk about Rory's problems.

This time after watching the show for the 100th time, I've realized how good he is except when acts a little needy and I realized how sweet even Alex was, even max who had his flaws was really good, lorelai, I do love her but she's quite selfish at times and Luke keeping her out of his daughter's life rubbed me the wrong way too. And Rory, God, how did she think that it was okay to treat her grandparents as horribly as she did when she dropped out of yale. Granted, they shouldn't have taken her in or supported the decision to drop. I think Jason was a great guy, honestly, smart, funny, not as loser like as Christopher, well, I guess no guy is as pathetic as Christopher on the show. • @sofiaisverydepressed4801
    @sofiaisverydepressed4801 Před rokem +12

Just a preface, I hate AYITL and will not be including that in my summaries of each character.
Also just wanted to add that Chris was so disrespectful to Lorelai before they split, he acted as if the only reason she didn't want to leave stars hollow or have another kid was because of Luke, and not because of the fact that she raised her daughter in stars hollow and that it was her home, or the fact that he brought up the whole kids things randomly at night and acted like it would be ok, even though he was not present during Rory's life and Gigi was in Paris and he hadn't seen her in months.
Jason didn't listen to Lorelai when she told him to leave the weekend of the dragon fly opening (arguably one of the biggest moments in her career) and lied to Luke telling him that they were still together despite the fact that he was still suing her dad.
Max over stepped lots of boundaries put in place by Lorelai and wanted a larger role in controlling Rory's life despite her still being his student, also his entire proposal was so messed up.
Logan was immature throughout his relationship with Rory (so was she) but he actively wanted to get better, the reason why he didn't push Rory to go back to school and resolve things with her mother is because he has a bad relationship with both his parents and didn't entirely understand Rory and Lorelai's dependency on one another, he always showed up, he loved her through and through just like she did. Also Rory's decisions were entirely up to her Logan was not responsible for how she chose to live.
Jess went after her multiple times while she was in a relationship, and constantly egged Dean on just to get a laugh, I am not saying that Rory is innocent in that situation. He was an incredible toxic boyfriend, constantly putting his own problems onto Rory. He made her miss her prom that she had looked forward to her entire life, he left without a word and then came back a year later and told her he loved her then three months after that he shows up at her dorm as she is packing up for the summer and bombards her with his ideal situation, wanting her to go and live with him in New York. He is an asshole of a human being to be honest, he thinks he's better then everyone else cause he reads and has good taste in music, he treats most people around him like shit. And lastly and most importantly he SA'd her, and then never gave her any explanation as to why, I have seen people argue that it was just a misunderstanding, but Rory clearly says "no" "stop" and "wait" multiple times and the only reason he did was because she pushed him off her.
Doyle was an amazing person for Paris, especially after she was groomed. I truly believe that the only reason he even tried to kiss Rory was because he was incredible drunk, not saying that being under the influence is an excuse but it was not a decision that he made consciously.
I despise Lane's storyline, she deserved so so much better, so I inherently don't love Zach but as the seasons go on her becomes more and more likeable. I really hate the hole "him being jealous of Brian" story line, cause I just scream at my tv "WHY DON'T YOU WRITE HER ONE THEN!"
Richard does a lot of bad shit but so does Emily in the end of the day they care about each other and their relationship is equal, they love and respect one another, but more importantly care for each other. Even if they do so in unconventional ways.
I truly do love and adore how much he understands both Lorelai and Rory, I do really hate him in the valentines day episode as well, but in terms of the April situation, I can somewhat understand how his thought process the main and only one to blame during that hole thing is Anna, she kept April from him from over a decade and then got made when he wanted to see his own daughter.
I love Jackson and Sookie in the beginning but he became so unbearable in later seasons. It is like the writers didn't know what to do with him so they made him an annoying baby. I understand that the way Sookie brought up the vasectomy thing was wrong, she should have talked to him. But not only did he not get it after giving their second child the longest middle name ever!! HE NEVER TOLD HER AND THEN WAS UPSET THAT SHE WAS STILL MAD AT HIM LATER ON.

Yes to all your points. Jess was super disrespectful and he was the real beginning to the cracks showing in Rory’s character. She became a cheater when she began emotionally cheating on Dean with him. Dean did shady things later on, but he took the breakup very well. At first anyway. Jess was super nasty to him and then all surprised when Dean started messing with him and then super insecure and disrespectful to EVERYONE. He never wanted to go to prom, town activities or to meet Rory’s family. I’m glad he grew up by the end of the show, but if I were Rory I would avoid him since there’s too much negativity there already.

    * Jealousy/Rage fo 99% of the love interests. Christopher, Dean, Jess, Luke...even some of the other male characters (like TJ).
    * Zach .... I'm just going to say it, he wasn't on the same intellectual level as Lane. Overall a nice guy? Yeah sure but IMO they should have stayed friends. Because the way their characters are, I always thought it would be a relationship that would quickly fizzle out. So the wedding just felt like a bad plot point (not to mention the pregnancy). Plus, they didn't have chemistry

Luke. Next question. Consistent, loyal, good-hearted, and more of a father to Rory than Christopher ever was. The April stuff got messy, yeah, but I fault that more to a jump-the-shark plot line and bad writing than a flaw in his character. He was really just trying to do the right thing.

I don't see how being married for 40 years is a good thing, there are so many toxic and violent relationships that keep staying together for all the wrong reasons. Now, being in a HEALTHY marriage with good communication, respect and fidedility for 40 years, that is good. Richard and Emily, while yes they love each other, fight a lot, dont communicate well and its a HUGE red flag that richard didnt tell Emily about his female friend he was lunching for years.

I love your video and I agree on so many things you said :) after watching it, I did the same (with the pros and cons) and, adding a lot of points here and there and I am pretty close to your racking.
I defer on some, like Jess. I am a huge fan of him, he is my favorit but for me here you talk about how they were as boyfriends so yes I put his abilities of growing and how he is after the break up a good influence to her but just for 1, maybe 2 points, but when he is actually her boyfriend he was, in my opinion, less good than Logan for example.
Also, I changed mi mind about Jason Stiles over rewaching the show and for me he is way better then a lot of the others. He can't sleep in the same bed then someone else, so what? I meen, I found Lorelai so difficult and alway wanning her way, about her habits, she compromise so rarely that I like about Jason, he has his own stranges habits and for once, she compromise and accept that every things can't be exactly how she wants. Also, she has her responsabilities in the break up, she clarely didn't was in love for choosing her father, who decide to back stabbing Jason, over him and he choose his carreer over her...
(My racking: 12: Christopher 11: Dean 10: Max Medina (wasn't that perfect: he compromise Rory's wellbeing over un crush and after rushed into a proposal without really knowing Lorelai...) 9: Jess Mariano (over overy thing else he did rong when he was with her, I really didn't like when he said that he attempt to activities of Stars Hallow when he wanted to get with her but now that he "has" her he doesn't have to do the effort ... and if you take point from Christopher for not understanding the relationship between mother and daughter, it's the same for Jess even more because he reject also Stars Hallow (i know he has issues thats why I care for him but that's still don't make him a good boyfriend), 8: Zach, 7: Logan, 6: Jason Stiles, 5: Doyle, 4: Richard Gilmore, 3: Jackson, 2: Luke, 1: Dave :)

I think it would be better to weight some of these pros and cons. While I don't think Dean, Jess or Logan were right for Rory, I would definitely flip Jess and Logan. Jess did encourage Rory but not really until long after they had broken up. He had anger issues too. He actively despised Stars Hallow, where Logan was ambivalent. He made it clear that he didn't want to take her to her prom or visit her grandparents. He did it eventually but complained a lot, making Rory feel bad for asking him to be part of her life. Logan at least made an effort to ingratiate himself to folks in the town when he met them, and definitely ingratiated himself to her grandparents. He wasn't a great influence on her. They're both so conflict avoidant that neither is a great influence on the other, but he also can't be totally blamed for her poor choices. She bears some of that blame. But most importantly, the thing in Kyle's bedroom was attempted assault. He tried to force himself on her. And he kind of did again when he visited her at Yale. He tried to convince her to leave Yale to live with him. He didn't listen to her even though she was in a lot of distress. How many times did she have to say no for him to hear her? He had the most character growth in the entire show and is probably the only character that became the best version of himself, but by that time he understood the damage he had done.

I agree with most of this, but as an abuse survivor who's been through real gaslighting, PLEASE stop using the term so loosely. Having a disagreement about whether something counted as cheating is *not even close* to gaslighting. It's crappy, it's selfish, and may even be manipulative, but it's NOT gaslighting. Using this term incorrectly is hurtful to survivors and makes it a Iot more difficult for those going through it to recognize it.
Gaslighting is an act of abuse done over a period of time where the abuser INTENTIONALLY tries to make the other person believe that what they remember or know to be true isn't true. It makes the victim question their own judgment and has negative effects that last for years. It can literally make you feel crazy, like you can't trust your own memories.

your opinions are completely valid but i myself being someone whos gone through gaslighting and have also discussed about logan with other people on reddit, there are actually several people who are indeed abuse survivors and actually do find logans behaviour manipulative or in a gaslighting manner. and i know some don't view it that way like you do and thats totally fine too. everyone is entitled to their own opinions and doesnt mean im wrong or that youre wrong. only that, just cuz u dont see it as gaslighting doesnt mean others dont see it that way.

    • @maggiedk
      @maggiedk Před rokem

@@zumann874 being manipulative is different from gaslighting, and gaslighting is a very specific term with a very specific definition in psychology. It's more than an opinion, it's a specific term for a reason, because gaslighting has very harmful and specific effects on victims of it. I do think it's fair to describe his behavior as manipulative. But it literally doesn't fit into the definition of gaslighting. I've studied psychology and have especially done a lot of research and talking to professionals about the effects of abuse, so I have a pretty good understanding of these terms.
And at the very least, if someone is going to describe it that way, they should provide the correct definition of what gaslighting is and explain how they think what Logan did fits into that definition. Because otherwise they're spreading misinformation about what gaslighting really is.

I think Jess' cons outweigh his pros.
He was in love with Rory yes but with the image of what he thought she was not with the real her.
He did not care that she was in a relationship.
He left without even saying goodbye .
He got mad and gaslighted her when she did not sleep with him.
He was super disrespectful to her family and friend : grandparents ,Lorelai ,Lane.
He did not participate in her life .(yes he went to her grandma's but he show out late and did not even try .
    He was not reliable.
He had anger issues (more than Dean)
Both Jess and Rory have abandonment issues and IRL that would never work.
I think these are major REDFLAGS not just cute cons.
Even if he changed ,he could not undo the hurt.
They have very different backgrounds .Rory went to prep school, she went to Yale, Rory was also the heir of the Gilmore fortune and she also had a very rich dad.

I recon a few good things of Jess that I didn’t pay so much attention during the show but, when he was Rory’s bf he was awful. He confuses her mind so much and the show don’t show it too much but that kind of relationship at that age could have created a lot of insecurities into Rory. I see he is better when he grows up, but he’s not Rory’s love interest by that time, so. I feel with Logan, Rory faced independency and she’s not used to it, she is very co-dependency of everyone around her basically. Rory being around Logan makes her reveal who she really is, an influential person with her values a “bit” messed up (she started showing that downfall way before meeting Logan, when she first kissed Tristan, or when she kissed Jess, and didn’t act well after any of both situations) so for me Logan makes Rory be who she deeply is

Like giving Rory space to be who she wants to be is a really healthy sign in a relationship, for the first time a guy she was dating didn’t idealice her, he just let her be and loved her anyhow and he had his own path, for the first time she wasn’t with someone whose whole life revolved around her and she didn’t know how to deal with it (we don’t talk about Logan in AYITL)

  • @brandiejaniece2305
    @brandiejaniece2305 Před 9 měsíci +2

Every list I see ranking these guys always negates Rory's personal responsibility. No one made Rory cheat 3 different times, quit school, steal a yacht, or take that stupid internship that would break her confidence solely because Mitchum wasn't up her ass like everyone else in her world was. Her momma told her not to take it but she didn't listen. It was her selfish privileged attitude that grew overtime that led to these things.
It wasn't Logan's job to make her go back to school. If Lorelai couldn't do it neither could Logan. That was her own journey. Logan let her be an adult and live in her decision while he continued school. Even the party boy knew he needed to finish school.
Jess came back for two whole episodes where we learned he wrote a book. That doesn't make him suddenly perfect.
Can we also remember that Dean was a 17 year-old boy without a fully developed brain yet people are expecting him to be totally mature and perfect at communicating. Many of the things people point out in his angry or insecure moments are a direct reflection of Rory messing with his head and stringing him and Jess along at the same time but gaslighting him every time he expresses concern.

Actually I like that Logan was not comforting Rory all the time like so many of the other characters did. He was not okay with the fact of her dropping out of Yale, he wanted her to succeed her dream career and did not just settle with the idea that Rory was doing her grandmas job at the DRA. Also when Rory wrote that article about privileged people, he brought her down to earth when pointing out that she was not any different than all the people she was criticising.
Personally I wouldn't go for a guy like Logan, but in Rory's case I think he brings out lots of her best character traits. (Let's not include the NEW YEAR season). And they make a great couple that challenges each other in an uplifting way. Not to forget he even let her live at his place. I think that there are still flaws within their relationship/ their characters just makes them together more realslistic. And to point something out: he never bailed like Jess did. And he never forcer himself on Rory like Jess did. He has his bad moments but I think they are more connected to his Family problems. And last but not least: they have an understanding how it feels like being that privileged. Only Rory tries not to see it - because she doesn't want to portrait herself in that lense. Logan knows where he comes from and doesn't lie to himself about it. Still a di** sometimes tho.
But I never understood why marriage would have meant the inevitable end of their relationship. I think it might just been for the dramatic end plot. I like that Rory's end goal of the series was not getting together with a guy, but it was not really necessary to break them up either.

You say Jess wanted the best for Rory a lot. Meanwhile his communication and the fact that he was just leaving all the time let to her being extremely sad and anxious for most of the time in the show involving him. He definitely loves her and might even want the best for her. But the truth is he did not do a lot to make her feel at her best within their relationship. He was a troubled teenager and they were cute together for some time. I never forgive him or the show that he forced himself on Rory at the party because he was in a bad mood. Also they never discussed that moment any further. Yes he told Rory that she was stupid for leaving Yale and he wanted her to go back to her studies, but so wanted Logan. Logan as her current boyfriend at the moment knew that he would not get trough to her if he was saying it directly to her. At that point in her life she distanced herself from all the people she was close to when they started to talk 'sense' into her. Jess was the only person who got to her because he was not available in her life and she held a high opinion of his thoughts - which is nice but this Situation showed me that they had been growing apart for a long time already. He might have wanted the best for Rory but he took himself out of the picture and never truly came back to stay. So there is no chance in hell for me that someone who is not actually seeking out contact would be a good match for Rory. Because she tried, but he was busy with himself. They might have worked together if they met later in life but they definitely were not great at being a couple during the time of the show. He was hurting a lot and Rory acted stupid around him, not in a healthy way.

A Big problem I think GG has is that once they want to create drama, they totally turn characters into assholes out of the blue. Dean had issues, but for the first seasons I was super team Dean, but when they decided they liked Jess better, they change him out of nowhere. Same with Luke in the April situation and many of the guys. Was never a fan of that

I'm not gonna say he's def the best guy in the show but I do think Logan was ranked too low. Some of those cons were things I hadn't considered before and I agree with you on 1. It being pretty uncool for him to not seem very interested in rorys life in stars hollow. And 2. Of course the year in the life affair was messed up, but that was also rorys fault. I think a lot of the other points about him being a bad influence on rory are unfair, she was an adult who could make her own decisions. I think he supported her better than almost anyone when she decided to take time off from Yale, he encouraged her to take breaks(that she desperately needed) I agree he was a jerk in the beginning, the way he treated Marty was messed up but I think he quickly grew, at least in that regard. I think over all rory and Logan had a positive influence on each other(excluding a year in the life, that whole arc was just wild) I think it was a wrong time wrong place kind of thing for them, Logan was learning to get his shit together(with rorys help, even though it wasn't her responsibility) but she just wasn't ready to do the same, even though I really think he would've been there every step of the way. What I truly believe is logans biggest flaw is the way he proposed to rory and after she said no the relationship was over. Wrong move for both of them I think. But that's all opinion and can be argued a lot of different ways, and I do understand why people don't like Logan, I just think he's not as bad as many people think.
What's not opinion and is just fact is that Dave was the best guy in this show and lane got cheated. Justice for lane, the show did her so dirty.
Jackson would've been tied with Dave if he didn't lie to sookie about getting a vasectomy, he went from on of the best to one of the worst in that one moment. It was super super gross and I lost all respect for him.

Men I hate:Jackson, Richard, Dean, Christopher, Logan (he could’ve just been in the next pile but the revival showed there was no growth and he got worse)
Men I’m like…yea he has faults but I don’t hate him: Jess (he sucked sooo much at first ngl, but he was entertaining, not cruel just clueless & he grew so Ig…but he sucked lol) & Michel (dude should’ve been fired)(he might go to the “hate” pile)
Boring but whatever: Luke (his fault was the daughter stuff), Jason, Max
    Love:Dave

Omg Jackson is so annoying and bitchy tho lol. Also you forgot Kirk! 😂😭 Dave and Jess are my favorites. Dave and Lane together really resembles my relationship with my boyfriend. 🥺 Except hes the drummer and I’m the singer songwriter lol. We have been together for almost 4 years now. ❤️ Dave is my favorite!!

if dave was the best gilmore girls guy and he truely loved lane then why didn't he make long distince work? olso dean should not have been soo low on the list because a lot of his cons were olso rorys doing and a reflection of rorys decisions and actions!

I cant believe that Jess near sexual assault is written off so easily for so many people just because he wanted the best for rory. Yes he grew and they were caused by a very damaging upbringing but the fact is he still tried to force himself on her because of his OWN problems. You don't treat ANYONE like that even with justifiable cause and he should not be forgiven just because we as viewers know what he's thinking. He also didn't try for her sake with the people she cherished, just like you said Logan didn't do either. I love Jess's character arc but I hate the praise he gets from the fandom because he belittled Rory so much even though his intentions were good. Both dean and Logan gave consistent love with much criticism from us while Jess gets praised for his inconsistent tsundere type of love.
And yes, my problem with him is his decision during his childhood but I think it's strange how forgiven he is.
