  • Neat - it's about time an affordable 100-400mm lens arrived on the Sony E-mount (and L-mount alliance) systems. Let's hope that one day it finds itself on Canon RF and Nikon Z mounts, too.

      Sigma and Tamron need to thank Sony for: (a) giving them the necessary tech info to make nicely compatible lenses (unlike some other makes); and (b) having a market large enough to be worth creating for!

      It simply shows, yet again, how poorly Sony treat it's body owners by providing reasonably priced native glass.
      Just don't mention how Sony ,by default, left it to Sigma to provide glass for the hugely successful Sony apsc range.

    Finding this video 2 years after upload - exactly what I was looking for. I had a Sigma 150-600 previously and it worked great. Obviously you can spend more, but for my use, I can't justify $2.5K on the Sony lens. If photography were a bigger hobby, maybe, but sometimes I go weeks/months without using it. I'll be pairing this with a Sony A6600 which is 3.6LB - very light. My prior setup - D500 w/ Sigma 150-600 - was 5.9LB. Weight savings is mostly for my sister - she loves birding, but had trouble with the heavier setup, especially if holding for a long period. She'll enjoy this one. Thanks for the thorough review.

    Hell of a lens! *Humble suggestion for your future videos* - in the bright light reflection part of the review (11:39), would be nice to see how good of a job the lens hood does because their design differs with each lens. Couple other things you could mention is whether a firmware update on the lens changes anything, or what version you tested the lens at, and on the photo samples, you could write very small in the corner of the screen the SS/ISO/F-stop settings for that photo, and/or focal length where applicable. Keep up the amazing work, I have been your ambassador on Reddit :D

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  Před 4 lety +26

      I'll try and think about that, but frankly...the lens flare section of my tests is fairly unscientific, so it might be tricky for me to find careful and fair way to do that, hehe :-) Generally though, with this lens, I only found any kind of problems when bright lights were directly in the image frame, so a lens hood wouldn't help in that respect. With firmware updates, I try to review lenses quite early, before the firmware updates come out. But I do sometimes mention them in the description (see my review of the Viltrox 33mm f/1.4), so keep an eye out there. Thanks for the comment, all the best!

    • @Eikenhorst
      @Eikenhorst Před 4 měsíci

      @@hardywoodaway9912 Indeed, it is almost double the weight of the 70-350mm and also more expensive. That seems excessive for 50mm extra reach. But this lens is now also available on X-mount, where it competes with the 70-300mm and it seems people are happy to choose this one instead for the extra 100mm reach there. (on the other hand, this full frame lens is lighter than Fuji's 100-400mm aps-c lens, but that one is f/5.6 at 400mm, but it does show that in general Fuji builds very heavy lenses!)

    The thing about Sigma is that they know how to make a lens that feels good to hold and is nice to look at, too. Nowadays, high quality optics are just not enough to distinguish 3rd party manufacturers from each other because it seems that they all can deliver. Sigma pulls ahead of the pack with well-finished lenses.

  • @HR-wd6cw

    Generally the sport mode for lens stabilization (in this case would be mode 2 on this lens) only stabilizes the lens when the shutter is clicked. Mode 1 on this lens (which is like Normal IS/VR modes on OEM brands) will stabilize the viewfinder as well but I think the effectiveness when the picture is taken is less (so you run a higher risk of of a soft image than you would with mode 2). That's really the trade off. For Nikon's, it's like using the Normal and Sport modes (Sport would be Mode 2 in this case, and Normal would be mode 1). You just have to decide which mode is best for the situation. Generally I've found Normal modes to work best if you're trying to photograph something still and you are still (you're just trying to counter any slight movement from hand holding on a fixed subject), and Mode 2 is for if you're not still (say your on a boat, or youre panning).

I'm considering a 2X extender, the Sigma 100-400, or the 100-400 GM. The Sony 200-600 is also under consideration, but I'm concerned it's too big to want to travel with or carry around just in case. I'm leaning towards the Sigma, but have plenty of options to consider and don't need to rush on a purchase.

    I just got my copy of this lens yesterday. I'm using on my A7RM2 (firmware 4.0) and I'm completely surprised by the fact that the Eye-AF function doesn't work (I get the "Invalid with the lens" warning). Most other reviews (all using A7M3) say that Eye-AF works fine and now I've seen your review using an A7RM2 and still getting Eye-AF... My camera firmware is 4.0, and doubt that is the issue. I've also noticed that the sharpness of all my shots isn't anywhere close to those I'm seeing on various reviews, including yours. I haven't seen any comments about there being bad copies in circulation, and I've been fortunate to never having had a bad version for any of the many other lenses I use. Any thoughts ?

    Nice video. Your videos are always very useful.
    I have a question. Why do you use that intermediate points of focal lenths? I mean, the middle between 100mm and 400mm are 200mm, not 250mm. In focal lenght terms, distances are proportionals, not absolutes.
    Between 10mm and 15mm, it is a huge difference. Between 400mm and 405mm there ist't any (in this case, 600mm would show the same difference that in the 10-15mm example).

    Hi, I just got this lens a week ago and I am noticing that the autofocus when shooting in video mode is veeeery slow compared when shooting photos. I mainly do videos and this seems to be an issue for me. I tried it both on my a7iii and a6600 and had the same experience. Have you had similar issues? I also haven't updated the firmware of the lens from 1.0 to 2.0 since I have to ship the lens for that. Thanks!

    Point of information about the Sigma teleconverters - they are for L-mount only. Perhaps they'll develop E-mount versions in the future, but don't count on it! Right now, the only teleconverters you can buy for Sony E-mount are Sony's own, very expensive models - which are designed for exclusive compatibility with a limited set of (mostly, very expensive) Sony lenses.

      @@mistermadsen if you are thinking 100/2=50 and 400/2=200. 50+200=250mm. Makes sense but in my head it should be 200mm calculated from the max zoom range. How would tou call halfway on a 18-400 lens then ?

    I consider buying this one or the old one to use on my a6600 (old on MC-11) for wildlife. What I care is sharpness at 300-400mm and AF speed and accuracy. Which one would you recommend to me, given that I already own MC-11 and that I can buy the old one used for around 60% of the price of the new version (used but on warranty)?

    i've been using the ef mount version of the sigma 100-400mm c on my M50 and its been brilliant from tubing and converting it down to get 2mm macro on the sensor to stacking converters so 2000mm+ telephoto.
    i'd be really interested in a direct comparison of this and the ef one when it comes out fully.
    maybe this might prompt sigma to make an m-m mount x2 teleconverter for the canon m when they make it for the system.
    i've been looking for an m-m mount x2 for a while.
    very much doubt i'd be changing my ef version for the m mount as i have canon origonal tubes and converters, i found third party ones too weak for the heavier lens.
    not sure how m mount tubes work fair with this one.
    great vid chris, if they come up with the 150-600mm for m mount that would be a delema as i yet to get that one on ef, though the higher price would make me think the ef mount more affordable

      I've been thinking about getting the ef mount version for my M50 mk ii. Only concern I have is taking photos of fast moving subjects, e.g. surfers and fast moving wildlife. Would the combination of the M50 and the 100-400 c be able to deal with that? Thanks

    Thank you for your review Christopher! Your videos are very helpful. Just checking that this lens would pair with the Sony a6000, would i lose image quality? (As this is a full frame lens). I was looking at the 70-350mm Sony lens but I'd like to eventually save up for a full frame body. The Sony lens is also more expensive in my part of the world.
