Sister Wendy!!! How wonderful! This is a fascinating documentary. Thanks for posting!
One of the very best documentaries I've seen. Thankyou very much for posting.
ANDREW GRAHAM -- DIXION . SUPER GREAT PRESENTER AS EVER !!!! WASTCHED MANY OF HIS ART PROGRAMMES YEAR'S & YEAR'S AGO ! MANY THANKS INDEED ! FROM, U.K. (2023).
this sister wendy is a true miracle : a living relic...
Treasures of Heaven is a fascinating and poignant documentary! I truly did appreciate it so much. Thanks a lot for sharing! Keep it up!
I cried after watching. Such respect shown to objects and theme.
I love old church because they are beautiful inside 😍😍
I got really excited when the presenter said that Sister Wendy Beckett was going to take him on a walk-through of the exhibition. [I have one of her books, which she inscribed and signed; as well as ALL of her VHS tapes].
That was a very powerful speech by that lady in the end. It doesn't matter what faith you hold, but if you are not in the least touched by it, you have no heart.
gre8 a Catholic church I was involved in started a Peace and Justice group, (thank you Father G) which first excited me. But then we were told that we can't work on any hot button, divisive issues, so not to upset some patrons of the church, to which I understand why. But I don't think I'm here to appease wealthy church patrons. I'm here to shine a light towards the injustices done to the marginalized, stigmatized, oppressed, tortured, and disenfranchised people in society. To perhaps simply deliver a message that God has heard the cry of the poor and hates not prisoners.(Psalm 69). I recently learned that our shared humanity and our brokenness from the traumas life can bring must be healed first, if we wish to attain a more peaceful world. 🌎🌿
Truth be told my heart feels frozen and numb lately. I need to heal my own trauma, so I could revive my soul.
Many times the only healing for deep traumas come from God himself. Look to Him for healing, and be patient. He wants to heal you, but it is not often done immediately.
What an awesome documentary. Good upload.
A big hug for Sister Wendy!
This was an outstanding program. I was moved by the stories of the saints. Inspires me to want to read more on the lives of the saints. They really inspire us spiritually. I thank God for them.
thanks for the upload...love all of Andrews art programs, nice to see sister Wendy again... I used to watch her art programs too.
Thank you Paulus LXXX for this upload, much appreciated
That was absolutely informative on all levels ,. A great watch .. Thnx !
I'm not religious and I don't really believe in god, but I'm obsessed with this stuff. I'm fascinated by the art and detail involved with relics. The history is amazing. I wish people still loved this stuff like they used to.
For every knee shall bow and every tongue confess..... seek ye the Kingdome of God through Christ Jesus. Gain thee thy salvation.
I pray that you come to know God and claim your salvation and all the wonderful gifts God has to give you.
I agree with you, and share your lack of belief; so unlike the other replies, I don't intend to convert you. Interest in the concept does not require faith, interestingly.
This is magnificent. I teared up upon the opening of the amethyst locket that contains a thorn from the Crown of Thorns. Very powerful this documentary. Thank you for sharing knowledge, truth, and light.
alexander..............how does anyone know this is from the real crown of thorns ?
@@daisystanley7103: We don't but that doesn't really matter (for religious believers at least). It's the symbolic meaning of relics that gives them their power. It's highly unlikely that anything remains of the crown placed upon Jesus' head...if Jesus actually existed, that is.
Very moving and powerful.
What a wonderful documentary !
So fascinating, and so powerful. Thank you for this.
So sad what art was lost due to the Reformation. I had no idea mideval works, contain such a special aura all its own.
Reliquaries are fascinating... thank you for a wonderfully made documentary🙏🏼
Fascinating. Thank you for sharing.
gives me a totally new understanding of the art, passion and faith expressed in magnificent to sublimely simple reliquary art!!
These magnificent treasures deserve a place in history (as does sister Wendy). Yet these are just symbols. Never forget that faith and love of God are the greatest treasures of all.
Sister Wendy is AWESOME!
On the contrary, thank you very much for comment. Regards!!
very interesting ! . . . really. thankyou for the video
i found Andrew thru a James Bond documentary..i was taken by his cultured and low key approach..so here i am..great presenter and fascinating topic..
That art is amazing, and the stained glass.
Very good, thanks for posting this.
Interesting and beautifully amazing!!!
Fantastic documentary
Our Shared History is sooo important for all nations ........ And for all peoples
Graham-Dixon achieves a real tour de force in this magnificent documentary. Approaching the subject of relics and reliquaries not only from the artistic standpoint but also the historical, cultural and religious contexts is no easy task. Less so when you are presenting it all in a 60 minute documentary. The subject in itself may not be very appealing, perhaps outright dated even for many practicing Catholics like myself. Having enjoyed this video, my interest and feeling for the "Treasures of Heaven" are now renewed to say the least. And yes, contemplation of death may evoke life and vice versa. Both christian and oriental traditions of wisdom have been aware of this for over two thousand years. Dr. Carl Jung would be pleased, I dare say. Thanks Paulus, AGD, BBC and why not, CZcams.
I know it is kinda off topic but do anyone know a good website to stream new series online ?
@Abdiel Yosef thanks, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I really appreciate it!
thank you so much for uploading this!
Fascinating thanj you for this
fascinating doc, loved it
Wonderful
Oscar Romero aught to be a saint/canonized under saint of courage and equality fairness to his fellowman in El Salvador he qualified under so.many standards that the Catholic Church fails to recognize, He stood up for someone other than himself he wasn't a pharisee, went out on a limb and died/littetally martyred while in service doing the work of God what else do you need. He's a martyr for the people of El Salvador and his story should be told all over the world 🌎 to speak up for injustice when one is being oppressed.
ROB Jus Me Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez was canonized October 14, 2018.
The man who did this video 8s so good I have never watched a more powerful video
Great documentary. It thels a noumerous people about the meaning of reliques from the beginning of christianity until today. Jezus said; I am with you all the days of your life. He, Christ, is the Way, the Truth and Eternal Life. Thanks.
What a wonderful presentation , these relics are so powerful, especially from Jerusalem ,holy oil ,amd holy water, heals skin problems.!!
@@csmcmillion I think it is called 'The Placebo effect!' Lol Auto suggestion. Witchdoctors have been doing it for thousands of years. 'Wear this mummified chicken's toe around your neck, or eat 3 spiders webs a day and you will be cured! Touch a dubious bone encased in a reliquary and you will be cured! Lots of money to be made. Rather like Big Pharma now! Lol
Very interesting! Thank you.
God bless y’all that approached this work with an open mind and felt the energy in its transmission to us and yourselves!
I have just finished watching the Treaures of Heaven it's moving to see and to hear of what saints or matters went throw in the name of the Lord our God. I actually didn't know much about relics nor reliquaries. Thank you Carl.
What a beautiful thing to go see the Sacred Treasures
Soli Deo Gloria. Glória somente a Deus.
Thankyou very muxh for uploading this I have been looking for over 2 years to get this. I would do anything to get a copy of this. Kind regards Dermot
.....I found myself touching the screen to touch the relic. I suppose we all would wish to touch the Divine so to become one with them and they with us. It’s like a trance, a self induced hypnotism to render us Heavenly on Earth.
....I can go to bed now and say goodnight in safety.
Sad. You Are the divine, you are part of the Great Mystery. As is every living thing, no greater or no lesser. The very planet. It is that recognition that will give you 'safety' A bone or a thorn, that could be from a chicken or any bush, will not do that for you. You nave to recognise it in yourself. it is there.
@@hogwashmcturnip8930 The Word of God (the Bible) doesn't say we are divine. Just the opposite. It says we are are all sinners and, until we are saved, we are children of the Devil. (John 8:44). There is no mystery. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. Don't believe and spend eternity in Hell.
@@johnbrowne3950 Dear oh dear. I didn't say that the 'Bible' did. That is one belief system amongst many others. But I don't believe in a 'Devil' and I don't believe we are all ' sinners' I don't believe in a Heaven and I certainly dont believe in a Hell! How very Medieval! But as neither of us can prove anything one way or the other, you go your way and I will go mine
@@hogwashmcturnip8930 Just a few notes: Heaven and hell go back to the beginning of time. Idols and relics do not impress me. The Roman Catholic Church is a cult. Saints are living believers in Jesus Christ. You will go your way and I will go mine. I prefer where I am going to spend eternity. Adios.
'Thou shalt not kill! No soldier is obliged to obey an order against the Law of God' - Archbishop Oscar Romero. The world needs more good people like him.
Thank you so much for your commentary. I'm glad you enjoy this magnificent documentary. Best regards Pablo
Superbly done.
Well written and narrated documentary but the filming is so annoying in that when talking about an object they show the face of the presenter instead of focusing purely on the object discussed. These documentary makers, camera operators and editors need to learn from the David Attenborough wildlife documentaries where they concentrate entirely on the subject matter instead of the presenter.
Very, very interesting.
It would be interesting if they carbon dated and dna tested many of these relics, such a very small sample is required to do this and it would be easy to do. For skeptics it would add another dimension to possibilities and would bring them closer to middle ground. Although belief is beyond objects and these items seem more like christian idolatry, however, they are beautiful treasures.
Thank you!!!!
Thank you so much for uploading, I've been looking for this for ages!
I love jesus
Revelation 1:13-15 KJV
And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
I am simply spellbound.
Relics belong in the Catholic Church NOT a museum. That’s sacrilege and a devastating disrespect for the needs of faithful people 💟✝️💟🇦🇺
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!!!
In Jesus words...."the gates of hell will hold no dominion over it (Church)". So in the history of the RCC's persecution and attempt to completely obliterate it, they may seemed to have succeeded in the beginning, but because Christ promised to protect it, the Church remained standing.
SO MUCH MORE TO LIFE THAN JUST TO BREATHE....IT IS WHAT WE BREATHE INTO LIFE THAT MATTERS..........
Jesus love us
21:23 - I was wondering more if it is sacrilegious to open the bundles.
Wonderful documentary. I'm supprised that there was no mention of the relics of the Orthodox Church.
I actually find them more interesting/moving, as a non Christian. As someone brought up in a Protestant country now living in a Catholic one, whilst I get 'it' I find some of the stuff way OTT. Holy Week drives me nuts. Endless processions of painted Christ statues in ever increasing torture and pain, to be finally carried past, dead in a crystal coffin, that always makes me think of Snow White! Churches with High altars that remind me of fairground organs. I expect them to strike up 'Under the Double Eagle and the Virgin Mary figure to start playing the cymbals! From what I have seen of Orthodox art, it is much more humble and 'human' yet still stunning. I really would like to learn more about it
Why would you pray to anyone other than God almighty? Why would you ask somebody else to pray to God for you? The Bible says you can boldly go to the throne of grace. You don't need a priest you don't need other "saints" to pray for you you can pray for yourself directly to God. That's why the veil of the holy of holies was torn in two when Christ died on the cross, so that we could all have access to God directly. If I have a really big problem in a store, I want to go to the boss not the cashier. I will say however that this is a beautiful documentary.
The Bible is so full of contradictions and errors that you can find support for almost any position.
How many more times do we need to see that eyeball relic?! I had to look away after the 5th time.
There is something very gruesome within the Roman Catholic Church. A few years ago the church toured St. Francis Xavier's arm and silly Catholics went to see it.
glad to see they used my birthstone amethyst....
I live in a small Spanish town, but we have the most important relic in the world, and our cathedral is even better ( or tied ) than the Sainte Chapelle . :D Sure,
Who cares! The Catholic church is a ghastly insitution, the world's biggest and best organised cult. But all religions are human-made lies, Judaism, Islam, Protestantism, Buddism, etc....you name it. They all promise enlightenment and better lives, when in fact they are simply means of controlling the population and offer only ignorance, darkness and bigotry.
Humanity will finally make a giant leap forward in evolution when all religious idealogies are once and for all eliminated.
@@sandrinecozic7214 Yes, it´s true. The relic is the most famous in the world . And the cathedral was built from 1.222 and it´s the most perfect gothic you can see. Trus me.
The relics are mostly fakes, especially the Crown of Thorns. However the power of faith inspired is very real an amazing documentary 👍
it's amazing that the relic of Saint John The Evangelist is hair , because according to Saint Robert Bellarmine ( Doctor Of The Holy Roman Catholic Church ) Saint John is in Heaven , body and soul ! so there's no flesh and blood relics of him ! but hair , YES !
The real miracle is that the cathedral survived the two world wars.
you see objects of veneration, I see the beginings of Idolatry.
And they say pagans are idol worshipers.
The Roman Catholic Church adopted pagan worship during Constantine's era. They took pagan gods and idols and turned them into Catholic saints with new names. Every living person who believes in Jesus for their salvation is a saint. Look up every reference to saints in the New Testament for proof.
It's not that I haven't enjoyed this fabulous documentary with these beautiful pieces of art, I am very confused. In the bible we are told empathetically to NOT worship objects; idols. Worshiping relics seems too much like idolatry to me, hence my confusion. Can anyone help with this problem? Explain to me why this happens? I just want to know for personal reasons.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful documentary!
Just pay attention, it's the Catholic Church, the centuries old evil side of it. It's where the church would only consecrate places of worship that had "relics" and for a certain "donation" we can give you your own relic..... do you understand where this is going? Now be realistic, people have never changed, greed inhabited churches as much as kings and thieves.
47:44 -- A. W. N. Pugin is the name of the architect.
Relics aren'tworshipped....they're venerated, respected in the honorof the person who owns the relic.Interesting how they just handle that amulet that encased the crown of thorns with barehands.
The synonym for venerating is actually worshiping. So essentially it's the same thing and this act is strictly prohibited in the bible.
If you understand the word of God, you would see they are forbidden. No graven image, no idols, therefore no "objects" to redirect one's veneration, worship and reflection of and for God The Father and God the Son from that which it should be.
@ Scottie Stell You are very mistaken sir and St. John of Damascus, a very early, well renowned Catholic Church Father would strongly disagree with you.
It's one thing to believe in God and another thing to believe medieval Roman Catholic bullshit.
GIBBERISH
Werrkkkkkk sister Wendy 📿💍💫
What a beautiful church... very sad the murder happened.
"main altar" ... actually called the "high altar".
I am not catholic. But I have a question in the bible it says do not worship idols. So why in Catholicism is it done ...God have mercy
I've often wondered about this myself. Along with saying prayers to Mary, and Catholic saints.
@@missylowe2181 that's what I mean . The only way to the father is threw the son..
Good question.. the relics aren’t worshiped but are venerated.. because we believe they can heal. The early Christians believed the same thing.. and i just remembered this interesting scripture..
Luke 8:43-48 English
43 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians,[a] she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. 45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter[b] said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.”
@@jesusmagana2458 That was Jesus Christ, the Son of God, not a person the pope turned into a saint or a Catholic idol or relic.
Lol
I can’t believe these relics are examined with bare hands.. should it be not with gloves so it will not be contaminated?
There's no need for gloves when handling most stone or gold objects. Gold isn't going to tarnish or be damaged by human contact. It's also thought that the handling of old or rare books should no be conducted with gloves either. They can do more harm than good.
Its easier to be careful and delicate with bare hands.. it is surprising the ancient objects they prefer to handle with bare hands..
The only thing valuable in religions: The art they produce.
I would greatly have to disagree with you. After doing some research you may find that statement utterly false and pretty disrespectful. How about the Big Bang Theory, the establishment of some of the first modern hospitals, the establishment of universities and preservation of knowledge, Genetics (as Gregor Mendell was a Catholic priest), the Church's influence of Western law as we know it( if you don't believe that look at the Declaration of Independence) and so many other things. Also how about the charity the Catholic Church gives every year(it's one of the leading givers of the whole world).
@@brandonbayangos6261 There's room for faith...and you booked the entire Hotel.
Idk what you mean brother but one only has to look at his story to see it. God bless.
Thank you brother
We still have them in the Orthodox Church.
RIP Sister Wendy.
I'm not one , That believes in relics , I put My Faith in Yahweh or Jesus Christ , It was alot Different when Yahweh or Jesus Christ choose his Disciples , These Men were True Believers of Yahweh being Promised By GOD to His People , These relics are just that things that are long gone , And need to be left in the earth
Yahweh was the god of the ancient Israelites. Jesus was a first century rabbi. Get it right.
