Respect. It's nice to see a filmmaker who actually looks back on the classics and appreciates them as a foundational building block for modern film-making rather than just disregarding them as relics of the past that hold no relevance or value today. If people actually took the time to truly understand older films, they'd realize that there's so much more to them than what meets the eye. In a lot of ways, writers and directors had to be a lot cheekier and more creative in the 40s, 50s, and 60s in order to get certain points across because of the massive censorship that was dominating the film industry in those days.
Lol if the idiots took their fingers out their asses theyd see the old stuff is a tep by step guidebook on how to make a good movie.
They were far better than the filmmakers today.

sometimes we forget how good Spielberg is . his angles and framing of Jurassic Park alone is the difference between his level.and current film

I love this man. He’s who made me want to direct, as well as Ridley Scott, Stanley Kubrick, Sam Mendes amongst many others.
That's what makes him.. what he is today.. a simply great legend

Spielberg has always personally been my favorite movie director of all time even as a kid...as a filmmaker he's genius, innovative, knows how to create brilliant visual story. But as a person he's also intelligent, happy, and just all around a great guy who loves movies for what they are. I totally agree that to really create a good modern day blockbuster or film, you really should take the time to look at movies made in the past...be it an old black and white movie or something from the eighties. See what makes these movies effective and why people keep coming back to these classics and apply them to your next film!

He is right...something so amazing about old films...I liked every movie of Hitchcock, then Poseidon adventure, million pound note, The Flight of phoenix and so many...there is a depth in dialogues, writing and acting...I wish I had been in Cinema bcas of the creativity it brings and all the crafts working together to make a magic and the director like Spielberg does it like a Master.
That was amazing advice actually. I was debating trying to sell my script but kept hoarding it to make a trailer to get financing (cause I gots no money) but i really enjoy the writing process of movies the most because its ultimately what's everything's founded upon. Also the phone idea is great, been debating just buying an iPhone and making shorts for awhile. Also really cool that he says he has ambition from his predecessors, you can really feel that in his movies that he wants to capture the magic of film. Like that of what you'd imagine people felt like going to the big movies in old time Hollywood, probably imagine that's how he felt and wanted make movies in a way that capture that for other people. Funny because about 3 years ago I was in a really bad place and just wanted to move away to somewhere cheap and put a trailer on it and never talk to anyone again, I read an interview with Steven Spielberg talking about his experience when remastering Lawrence of Arabia and how much he respected David Lean, him talking about his hero was how I felt talking about him or some of my other favorite directors. It was after reading that that I knew I didn't want to give up just yet and it's in that industry where id find my people, not in the middle of the desert or woods.
After watching so many Marvel films, because that's what cinemas are stuffed full of, I went back and watched Raiders of the Lost Ark. The quality of Speilberg's directing just stands out. Then you start watching other older films, Ghandi for example. Or newer ones like the Bourne films. Anything that's not superhero and you realise just how much we're missing from today's story telling. Little wonder the audience has become tired of the cinema experience, we need something exciting to bring us out again. Maverick proved there's still demand to see film on the big screen, if the story is right.

Spielberg is very creative,ambitious,brilliant that's why his better.
I recently compared George Pals "Time Machine" from 1960 with his successor (remake) from 2002. The newer film was made with a lot of effort, quality and production value, no doubt about that, but i cant help myself, i stick much more with the original film. It has a quality, that draws me into the story, his "old-fashioned" style give it a quality of a good old book classic. A special quality i cant find in the newer one.
Red River is an amazing film.

he is right. for me this manifests in that famous, well-known Truffaut-Interview with Hitchcock - all you need to know about film is in this book, buy it and read it carefully, Hitchcock explains his way of doing things there. you will never need another book again.

I like that he says to go back and watch old movies because I just love to go back and watch old movies. I don't know why movies these days gotta try so hard to look new and modern and generic. I just love how older movies are shot. I'm referring to 60s 70s. People might think that newer is better, I beg to differ. I think older movies are better. If I could get into making movies these days I would shoot it more like an old school movie.

I was the baby in my family and by the time I got to college, my sisters had moved away and each had a passel of kids. I couldn’t afford to buy each kid a present, so bought a family present for the holidays. I would buy them, on VHS, movies I thought they should see. At least we could talk about them on my rare visits. I was told that every Christmas they would say, “Ugh…another one of Uncle Jimmy’s black&white movies.” But they would watch them and invite friends over to see them, too. Years later, my nephew David told me that when he set up his first apartment, he went out and bought a DVD player and the first movie he bought was the first VHS I had sent them…SOME LIKE IT HOT. I knew I had done right by them!

I've been struggeling with this for a few years now, since I became an uncle.
I love movies, and I grew up on (among others) the Spielberg directed and/or produced classics of the 80's.
And no matter how much of an AWESOME kids movie I think 'The Goonies' is, I can't imagine that my two nephews, age 6 and 9, that ALREADY live their lives at 100mph on their smart phones, would be able to sit down with me for an hour and 45 minutes and watch it, let alone watch it and enjoy it.
-Even IF I paid them.
Does that make 'The Goonies' a bad movie? -Hell no! 🙂

I'm owed TWO Academy Awards for scripts that have been stolen from me. --"Shakespeare In Love" and "No Country For Old Men". Just Google "Steven Spielberg, Hollywood Plagiarism"--he's a stinking thief and a pig. He's a Hollywood Nazi. Lots of directors are better than Stevie the Thief--Hitchcock, Capra, John Ford, William Wyler, DW Griffith, Abel Gance, Fritz Lang, John Huston, Sergei Eisenstein, etc.

Almost every movie you see the script has been stolen. Script theft goes all the way back to the founding of motion pictures. Up until the 1940's the studios could put any name they wanted on the "screenplay by" credit. The FBI hasn't been given a budget to go after script thieves and the 9th Circuit Court hasn't ruled in the favor of ripped-off writers in decades. Hacks are stealing scripts left and right, since there are no consequences for script theft.
I will never ignore him. He influenced my childhood in so many ways that it's impossible for me to discredit the work he's done.
Lol. Skip. Best directing advice? How about, "Nah, don't remake 'West Side Story.' Or 'Casablanca.' Or 'Lawrence of Arabia.' That would be stupid beyond belief."
