    I have preached for fifty years, and always used just a postcard to have the outline, main points, and the Bible references. There is only so much you can fit on a small card!

    As a preacher - this was encouraging. Began preaching without notes only a couple weeks ago.

    You know this thought just came to me, as this is a channel for "practical church planting". Where does the Lord instruct his disciples to plant churches that mainly focus on a Sunday morning gathering with a sermon? Aren't we called to make disciples and is preaching on a Sunday morning gathering really biblical and is it also an effictive tool to make disciples? When it comes to preaching I only see the Apostles preach the gospel to unbelievers and they would do it always outside the church.
    What we do in modern churches today is religious entertainment for 2 hours on a Sunday morning, where we have a worship concert followed by a lecture. I think the church our Lord Jesus had in mind looked rather different, and also the first believers gathered in a very different setting on a more daily basis with focus on relationships instead of formal meetings. It took me over 30 years to realize this.
    I now have left the Sunday morning system, and the Lord is leading me into a much more intimate relationship with him and with other fellow believers that he is placing beside me. I now love the church more than ever. I'm so excited and I can't wait to see what else the Lord has planned for me on this journey, but I can tell already that I don't want to exchange what I have now with the religious Sunday morning system where I was concerned about how to deliver a sermon and to perform a program.
    I hope and pray that this would be helpful for someone. If that is you and if you're in despair over the present status, give it some serious prayer. Maybe the Lord is calling you to a new chapter on your journey with him. If that's the case you'll be surprised how the Lord will put other believers around you and how the church comes alive. I won't tell you exactely what it looks like for me these days because the Lord might have something totally different in mind for you. And what I want to share is not an other new formula for church planting. But what I can tell you is that we as fellow believers share life together on an almost daily basis, where we encourage each other, pray for each other, celebrate communion, and also minister to people around us.

    Why would you want to preach without notes, what is the appeal?

  • @5Solas1Truth

    I think it depends on HOW you preach.
    I use many cross references.I go verse by verse line by line. It is more tedious
    I do think bing thought preaching can do be without notes

      Thanks for those thoughts! It definitely can vary depending on your style.

    Thanks a lot for this. It was very helpful. I did have a question though: what is "putting in the work" mean? I know some of that entails studying and reading commentaries but how is "putting in the work" for no notes sermon preparation different than "putting in the work" for a manuscript sermon?

    • @PracticalChurch
      @PracticalChurch  Před 5 lety

      Hey Matthew! No doubt, both no notes and using a manuscript take a lot of work and effort. However, in my (Dylan) experience, it takes more effort and time to internalize and give a message with no notes than a manuscript, as you can simply read a manuscript once the manuscript is written and edited. To preach without (or minimal notes) you often have to review it more and spend more time working through the material so you can give it with no or minimal notes.

      @@PracticalChurch When you say material are you talking about a manuscript you write up but then take no notes to preach? Also do you have anything pre-scripted to say in your mind before you go up? Thanks for the reply!
