"All that matters is the movie" hit the nail on the head.
I couldn't care less about packaging, slip covers, steelbooks, art cards, I just want the film.

    I have a couple of rules :
1- I buy one version, only if I have already watched and Liked (for movies and series) , don't double dip unless it is to get a upgrade from dvd to Blu-ray or 4k.
2-Boutique? Only for my favorite movies, series, books, comics or games, and only If I do not have that said movie/serie/book/omnibus/game already.
I do not get everything, will never do that.

Really appreciate you putting this up, breath of fresh air. I've only seen myself as a collector for the last 6 months when I got drawn into the boutique thing but in reality I've been doing it for a lot of years. I've storage bins in my spare room of dvds, hundreds of them and some still in the shrink wrap. It's nuts! I've even got a cupboard full of VHS from back in the day. Anyway, when I look at the Facebook groups and youtube videos , it's a crazy world regarding the physical media thing. It's very easy to get sucked into the whole collectable thing and I just decided to take a step back and reassess what I've been doing, obviously expense is a large factor. At the end of the day we're all here for the love of movies but somewhere in the mix I feel that's getting lost in all the special edition box set insanity which I've been a guilty participant. Bottom line, I stumbled across this video you put up and really appreciate it, look forward to watching some more content. Cheers.

Thanks so much! it's refreshing seeing the overwhelming positive response to this video I originally didn't know if I was going to release, Sometimes you just have to be honest about your collecting & tell yourself "keeping up with the joneses" isn't healthy, even if I'm just talking to myself in a mirror you know.
I appreciate a good box set & if I had the room & money, I totally would. But I'm old school, my love is the movie 1st. If I'm buying something just for the packaging I have to really love it, or more recently I've been getting big into my VHS collections & I will only buy if it's the artwork I want & the packaging isn't completely trashed haha

Great video, man. I just subscribed. I'm also new to YT. Just started the channel in January. Since starting the channel I've noticed I have increased my purchases with DVD's (had to 😂), physical media.
Since becoming a more serious physical media collector (started in 2019), I've noticed I'm a lot of different traits that you've mentioned in this video, which I definitely have to slow down and check myself. Which can be very difficult, but I appreciate these types of videos. I was thinking about doing the same, as I love getting different perspectives from other physical media collectors.

First let me say that it is a pleasure to watch a video with correct framing and thoughtful lighting. My collecting has changed because of streaming . I only purchase new films that are over 20 years old. Films that are unlikely to be easily accessible on Streaming. I am lucky to live in Burbank California with 3 major sources of used Blu-ray/ 4K at fairly cheap . I own over 100 3D movies that I could not afford to buy at retail. 2024 is the Golden age of buying used with so many people getting rid of their collections.

Nice video. I agree, boutique labels have exploded and it is hard to keep up with them. I, too, am interested in a lot of smaller movies that have never had a bluray release. Finding stuff second hand is key, especially if you don't care about the box it comes in. It is all about the movie itself. I love when a movie gets a 4K release because it means that my chances of finding a bluray or dvd of it at the thrift shop is much higher.

I'm with you on just buying the disc, everything else that comes with special releases are pointless to me but people on CZcams and Instagram will start convincing you otherwise. @DapperManDan Před 9 dny

So it's kind of funny.... prior to DVD, I had a lot of VHS tapes in my late teens and early 20's, some went back to my childhood days.... I started collecting DVD's probably in 2002, 0r 2003, kind of when they really started to catch on (I know they have been around since like 1996 or 1997 and I had a couple then, but I didn't have my own DVD player and could only watch them at my dads house as he had a DVD player). Once I got my first DVD player around 2002, I started replacing my movies on VHS on DVD as the movies became available... I now regret getting rid of my VHS collection with the exception of a very select few (thankfully my dad still has his VHS collection and there was some overlap).... I started doing the same with Blu-rays and purged a lot of my DVD's with plans to replace them once the blu-ray released, regret some that too. Some of my older DVD's look awful, but I have kept them because Blu-rays for those movies have not become available yet and who knows if they ever will. I have bought some used DVD's in recent years to replace movies on DVD I purged because, again, they have not released on blu-ray yet... or I have bought them through Warner Archive, which will press a DVD (and some blu-ray) upon ordering.... or at least that is what they used to do.... and they are decently priced. As far as boutique labels go, I have always been a fan of Criterion for a long time... and the last few years Kino and Shout Factory have had some great releases.... I have a few Arrow releases, there are more I want, just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I only have one Vinegar Syndrome release, though there are a couple others I want to get. I have not gotten any Second Sight because I do not have an all-region player, I really wanted to get their release of Dawn of the Dead, but my old Anchor Bay DVD set of that has a beautiful transfer and my blu-ray player upconverts the image already and it contains most of the same special features and all the different cuts/edits of the film, so it was not a priority. I also want to get their release of the original version of The Hitcher as it's the first time it will be released on Blu-ray and they have completely gone through and restored the picture for the release. But when it comes to boutique releases, I just weigh it against if I already have the movie or not and if I do, do I feel the need to double dip or replace it. A lot of the times for me it will depend on if the picture transfer has been restored or not. Other times it's if it's one of my favorite movies, if so, I am going to want the best quality version and release of said movie.... And though I have not dipped my toes fully into the 4K realm yet simply because I do not have a 4K Player or TV yet... I have few that I got that have both the 4K and blu-ray discs in them so whenever I do upgrade, I won't have to get those. Lately I have been trying to limit my collecting to buying older movies that are hard to find now or might be out of print or I purged and never replaced or movies I can't live without.

Soon to be closed and no longer accepting new members, Disney Movie Club was the way to get cheap Disney and Marvel blus and 4ks. Just placed a few last orders, blus 10 and under and 4ks mostly 12-15, and when people would first join, and this was a bigger deal before 4k was a thing, you'd get like 6-8 blu rays for $15-20 or less, total.

I think box sets are fine as long they include multiple films or entire series. Wasn't sure if you meant your just not into thick hard box releases for single films, cause I do agree with that, especially if there's no exclusive on-disc content to those limited editions, I'd rather save the $ and space and get a standard, but I do own stuff like the Arrow Tremors 4k limited set but that actually has an additional disc of extras including short films, etc that aren't included in the smaller set. Scream Factory does send rolled posters, not folded. Boutique labels do go back to the DVD era. One could argue Criterion in the VHS/laserdisc era was a boutique. Many boutiques were around since early DVD, including BCI Eclipse, Unearthed Films, Synapse, Blue Underground, Media Blasters/Shriek Show and Anchor Bay, all of those founded in or near the mid 90s (Anchor Bay, Unearthed) to early 2000s (most of the rest I listed).

    • @thelastmoviestanding
      @thelastmoviestanding  Před měsícem

oh yea I should have been more clear on that lol I prefer box sets with multiple films for sure, that's why I got the Conan Chronicles set instead of the individuals. I love second sight films they they put out too, but I just plan to get the standard editions.
I've never got a poster with my scream factory movies, that's good to know though. I always get mine after they've been out awhile.
You're right Criterion does go way back, I have a thick Criterion DVD of Armageddon from back in the day. Criterion (to my knowledge) doesn't go crazy with box sets though that I have seen. I love their selections! I just always wait for the sales cause I don't wanna spend $40+ right away. Except for The Others, I got that 4k day 1.
I'm really not trying to hate on box sets, I think they are cool as hell, & if I had the space & could afford them all I probably would lol. It's just so much coming at once it's sometimes hard to decide where to go when buying. Which in hindsight is a good thing since we have so much coming out.

  • @perryfan49

15:30 it made perfect sense for me. I have a couple Eureka video releases like that but it’s harder to deal with because the poster slides into the slip case next to the case of the blu ray. If that makes sense. They stopped doing that quickly though

In 2020 was when i had my big boutique discovery. I knew about Criterion and i think i had a couple Kinos without knowing they were Kinos. I used to shop at Borders before they went under and just started buying because the movies looked interesting. But then in 2020 i discovered all the others and really got into the technical aspects of 4k restoration. But still in 2024 im just following my interests across the boutiques. I’m new to the physical media collecting game and it is very interesting the game we play as collectors of almost a guessing game of seeing if boutique labels will put out a 4K of a beloved blu ray only available movie or if a movie will go down in price or juggling whether to get a movie you enjoy in a standard edition for cheap or a beautiful box set (of mostly useless items) for $$$. So I appreciate this video! That’s okay if it wasn’t streamlined on one particular topic.
I decided early on that my collection will only include movies I have seen and WANT to watch again. I have saved myself plenty of money making sure I watch a movie first before buying it😂

(Sorry if this is long but the vid was 26mins so this should be fine 😊) Cereal at Midnight spoke to one of the guys from a boutique label & he too was worried about consumer burn out. He was worried about people running out of space/money for new physical media & how it could lead to collecting being niche & pricing out new collectors. New collectors see these boutique label prices & can get intimidated, then give up. I think this video could help them realize they don’t need every new release.
I focus on getting the movies I love in the best quality & sometimes I’m ok with the dvd. For example Running With Scissors is ok, I’m not going out of my way to get the Blu-ray. I upgraded my Cloverfield dvd to 4K & if I’m being honest the graininess of the dvd kinda worked for the movie. I could’ve kept it & just gotten the digital in 4K. However I LOVE True Romance so I got the steelcase AND the boxset from Arrow. So what you collect & how you collect is gonna be different for everyone.
On boutique labels, I wait for a sale or for when they eventually release a standard edition (non boxset) of the film. I appreciate all the work they do but I’m not paying $50 for a crappy B film.
At one point I too bought movies & didn’t watched them. I bought a dvd of Narc in 2006 didn’t watch it until 10yrs later. (The 4k is coming out soon will I get it, maybe lol) Yeah. I’m not proud of it or the fact that it wasn’t the first time. It happens, judge us kindly.
I’d love to see a video of films you’re trying to upgrade, how you decide which movies you’re going to upgrade, do you check them to see how good/bad they look before deciding. Maybe it might introduce films you have to others that may not have seen them. (Btw try Thriftbooks dot com for used physical media)
Good luck. Keep filming, your editing is chef’s kiss, you’ll get used to talking to the “camera” (it’s us!) lol

Thanks! Im getting more use to talking to the camera as I go. I'm a video editor in my day job which sometimes makes it hard to put much effect into polishing edits for this channel.
I love Cereal At Midnights videos. He's 1 of the few physical media CZcamsrs I feel is the most authentic. Pricing is definitely becoming an issue the more "in style" it gets again to collect movies.
I'm trying to be okay with just the DVD lol which I am 99% of the time. But im starting to see how easy DVDs are to get where Blu-Ray are getting harder & harder to find for certain movies (that $60 Blu-Ray I was talking about in the video, I just bought it haha, The Ringer from 2005) lol it's a 20th Century Fox movie that I honestly don't see Disney re-relasing anytime soon given it's subject matter haha.
10 years before you watched a DVD? DAMN! hahaha I have a few DVDs I bought and haven't watched yet but maybe only 2years old. I just bought Basketball Diaries on Blu-Ray a few months ago & haven't watched it yet, honestly don't know when I'll watch it, Its was kinda a fomo buy cause it was only $35 & it's really hard to find on bluray so I just grabbed it. but I do have a few DVDs I bought like 2 years ago I haven't watched yet too.
I only buy Boutiques when there is a sale or I see their stock is super low. There's so many criterion 4k's im just waiting for a sale. I will definitely try Thriftbooks.com, ive never heard of them before.

I have every doctor who DVD and blu ray a bunch of Hong Kong blu ray films. I have John Woos blu ray Hard Boiled that was released by Dragon Dynasty and is now Out of print. I am so happy I have it and will never sell it.

Nice!!! Yea I have the Dragon Dynasty Hard Boiled 2 disc DVD with the slipcover, the OOP Blu-ray is way to expensive for me to upgrade to lol. Hoping for a release or a 4K from Eureka or something.

@thelastmoviestanding So John Woo mentioned that he doesn't own the rights to Hard Boiled and The killer. Chances of a 4k release are looking very low, sadly. I only once paid good money for an OOP Dawn of the Dead . Got in an eBay bidding war. The bid started at 10 dollars, and someone kept over bidding me, lol. So I was like ok F it! 50 dollars 😆 🤣 😂. After that, it was mine. It was worth the money.

@@Dredd2042 I spent almost $80 recently on a German Blu-ray of Dangerous Beauty from 1998 lol dumb, I know. But it never came out on Blu-ray in the states & is almost impossible to find anywhere, I found 1 copy & said F it lol.
Hard Boiled is owned by somebody, I know Criterion did a DVD back in 1998 of it. The film is too iconic (I think) for it never to get a release. fingers crossed

Everybody's saying they should buy these shows Disney are putting out on physical to send a message.
I'm not spending $40 on one season of a show. Ill wait for
Standard editions or a complete series.
Some of these shows only have 10 episodes.
And they're charging $40 or $50 per season.
At some point people gotta choose not to be raped in their wallet.
Supply and demand will bring the price down if people stop paying it.
Unless it's an old movie I've been waiting for release we're already a decent price 14 to 20. I don't buy new releases till a price drop. And some movies I'll wait till Black Friday.

Dude... totally agree lol 1st of most of them are thrash! lol I bought Mandelorian S1 & S2 on 4k.. kinda of wish I got the Blu, the HDR makes them so dark, I don't remember them this dark on Disney plus, but maybe its also cause I don't have an OLED tv or it just modern cinematography is dark & shit now lol
they are stupid expensive too, the only other 1 I may get is the Hawkeye show but it was just mediocre. sadly Disney does't go down in price. Im still waiting on Avatar 1 & 2 4k to go on sale which has never happened.

I'm a film nerd so naturally I love physical media and boutique companies. Why not enjoy the deluxe treatment these films get if you're able?
I agree with what everyone else says...the movie matters the most. But part of the fun is the fanfare.
I think there is a difference to highlight between FILM collectors and PHYSICAL MEDIA collectors. There a lot of people in this space that are more into the aesthetic of collecting for the sake of collecting over the art itself.
I don't collect boutique for the sake of it. I collect boutique because of the care put into them.
It's all about personal responsibility with your collecting. Having a guideline you follow makes collecting sooooo much easier.

I 100% agree & think that's a great way to put it, the part about some people in this space that are more into the aesthetic, I love how you worded the. & yea I don't think there is anything wrong with that at all. I buy stuff just for display too (more on the VHS side) but it's still in the asme ball field.

I jumped on it too haha Arrow had a flash sale 2 weeks ago too & I got some titles for like $10. I think I bough like 5 from VS before they went out of print.

Dude I just got on vinegar syndrome and bought a few titles cuz I have extra money. I spent $100.
I had to get the standard edition of invasion USA. Because it's one of the best Chuck Norris movies and I only have the DVD and it's on 4K with tons of features.
I got lady reporter without the slip since I'm trying to get all of Cynthia rothrocks Hong Kong movies.
I'm a big fan of her.
I took a chance on the instructor.
The trailer made it look hilarious.
Just because it's right up my alley.
A so bad it's good martial arts movie.
I tried not to buy anything because it's mainstream. A few titles Im waiting for a Standard. I think the only ones they don't release are the VSAs.
One of my secrets is I take a screenshot or a photo of all new releases and then I wait for Black Friday unless I find them cheap used. Unless it's one of my favorite actors in the Blu-ray/DVDs 15.
Is the movie is in a genre I like and I know I'm going to dig it I'll just go ahead and buy it and take a chance.
I try to stream first using the rocku app or reelgood app. So I don't get dupped by hype or packaging. Especially boutique labels. The main place I discover new movies and stream now is tubi. Mostly indi movies. And its free.
