I was only 12 in 1974 and didn't get to see this when it was current. My folks would have had to take me and my five siblings. It was up to them. I think the film was a pg rated one. An older cousin who lived with us then told me about the film and the SENSURROUND thing. Eventually I saw the film on tv, but didn't see it uncut until about 10 years ago via a dvd rental. As a disaster film it holds up well stylistically and the story isn't as melodramatic as I recall it. It looks quite realistic for its time considering the limited resources they had to work with. My folks did take me,a few of my siblings and a friend to see THE TOWERING INFERNO I think a year later. It too has held up rather well for its time.

Saw this movie at the Loma Theatre in Point Loma, (closed in 1988 and converted into a large bookstore) San Diego in Sensurround late 1974. This movie cinched my interest in special effects in film making, model making and at my first visit to Universal Studios in 1977 I was amazed at some of the special effects used in the movie, like the bending of plexiglass mirrors to make the buildings look like they were contorting, and the matte paintings! In 1984 I was going to San Diego State and I was so HONORED and lucky, to pick up a couple of people at the airport to come speak at our class. One of them was Albert Whitlock who did the matte paintings, I forgot who the other guy was - but during the talk he got really reflective and emotional. During the summer of 1985 I interned on a local motion picture (Sour grapes/Happy Hour) and unfortunately I hated it so much I changed my major to theater.

The amazing Academy Award-winning visual effects still holdup today; they were accomplished by Albert Whitlock, Glen Robinson, and Frank Brendel. Those three guys were aided and abetted by Clifford Stine, Roswell A. Hoffman, and Cleo E. Baker. EARTHQUAKE also snared an Oscar for Best Sound (Ronald Pierce and Melvin M. Metcalfe Sr.), and racked up Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography (Philip Lathrop), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Alexander Golitzen, Preston Ames, and Frank McKelvy), and Best Film Editing (Dorothy Spencer). There you have it.

The movie also has a good feel quality, even if it was directed by a man a lot of people didn't like.

Monica Lewis died in June 2015 at age 93. A shame because she was so bright and healthy. I was sure she would live past 100.

By the early 70's are we really considering it still "vintage" Los Angeles?
