That goo on the heat sinks may actually move the heat to the outside world instead of a trapped dead air space within at best heating the batteries. Rubber on the heat sink fins and batteries is probably intended to sink the heat to the case. Try checking the thermal conductivity of the rubber or rubber foam. It's really quite easy to build a 48v solar charger. All you need is a few solar panels in series and a 48v capable charge controller. Victron makes many charge controllers that go all the way from 12v to 48v. I use one. Right now I'm running 12v, but if my inverter ever burns up, I have enough LiFePo4 cells and the charge controller to switch to 48v.

    • @Kfrankie46
      @Kfrankie46 Před 2 lety +3

      @@ralphbell1786 it helps more than you think, if it was open air it would create a pocket of hot air and because there is no airflow it would stay around the heatsink area with very little transfer to the plastic, I agree, if heat on that heatsink is an issue it would be good to see the heatsink extend to the outside of the box but still be watertight

    • @LiquidTurbo
      @LiquidTurbo Před rokem +1

      @@Kfrankie46 No one wants metal outside of the battery except at the terminals. I agree with your analysis. Heat transfer dynamics, it doesn't look good from the afar, but having this heatsink to distribute heat to a casing (even if plastic), is far superior than air trapped inside. One can do the calculations to figure this out, particularly if the potting material has a high heat transfer C value. There's more than meets the eye here with the heatsink design.

    The rubber on the BMS heatsink in the cheap battery is probably still better at conducting heat to the outside that air would be, i.e. by filling the heatsink fins up with the rubber glue they likely achieve at least a certain amount of thermal coupling to the outside world.
    Of course, being a sealed system, it will always be difficult to get rid of the heat and a heatsind without fins that is directly glued to the outside surface of the battery casing would likely be the better alternative.

    The undocumented "communication" port is possibly an internal quality control test port and not meant for consumer usage.
    Update: In an Amazon image for their 24V 80Ah I see a cable attached to a "whistling" battery monitor to display the SoC, so possibly it's for a similar device that they haven't started marketing yet.

    I bought two of the 12v 100ah Powerus batteries. I charged them with the same Aims 75a charger @ 48-49 amps. It took about 1hr 40 minutes. According to the app they are 100%. I was expecting to need to to use my 10amp power supply to finish the last 10% to balence the cells but the Aims fully charged them. I have not load tested them yet as I am waiting my Victron shunt. The cells are within .004 of one another on both batteries at average voltage of 3.575v on one battery and 3.355 on the second battery.

When monitoring using my Victron 500amp shunt 100ah was observed during charge and discharge with no variation. So I believe at this point the batteries are good and problem is in the app.

    While a quick review can sometimes help when making a purchasing decision they're really not thorough enough to make an informed decision. I bought the Powerurus 12v 100ah battery and for the most part it works fine. However, one behavior of the BMS is troubling. After charging to 100% using a Victron SCC (LifePO4 preset) "full charge protection" is triggered and the chargeMOS turns off. The battery needs to drop to less than 70% (in app) for the chargeMOS to turn on again. While it will probably be OK for my use, there have been good solar days where I prefer it topped off. Here's the response from support: "Because the battery has not yet reached the overcharge recovery stage, it is not allowed to charge. This is designed to avoid repeated charging of the battery. Charging will resume only when the voltage is close to falling below 3.3V. Please charge the battery again when the voltage is close to 3.3V."

    Outside Terminal Heat Sensors without low temp cut off makes sense since the terminals can be cold from the environoment but inside cells are still warm enough.
    Detecting terminal overheating due to poor connection quality with loose screws and maybee overcurrent drawn is realy smart.
    As long as the inside cell Temp Sensors cut of charging below Zero all is good.
    Only one sensor for low temp cutoff is still a bummer. since if this one fails you dont have a spare.
    The Heatsink in the Rubber gives some body heattransfer to the outside. Better as just air arround inside the thight case working as thermal insulation. (Some newer Toolbatterypacks do this with the Plasticasing arround cells. Eliminating Airgaps between cells and outside shell even a poor thermal conductor like plastic is better as just air.
    The "cheap" encasing is nothing to worrie about as long as it matches outside dimentions of standard batteries abd got carring straps.
    As you see on the outborad batterie case the mounting wing take space some might not have in their batterie compartment.
    It would be nice to have a Inside x ray like view of the batterie for the customers or a clue where the bms heatsink is.
    This side is the point where you might put watercooling pipes for the batterie pack or press it against a tankwall or you might put a thicker metal plate (aluminium) onto an encasing as a heatsink.
