Janis Putelis In Search of His First Archery Elk, Part 1 | S2E01 | MeatEater Hunts
Vložit
- čas přidán 10. 05. 2021
- In this episode, MeatEater's Janis Putelis is joined by Jason Phelps, owner and operator of @PhelpsGameCalls, for a September elk hunt on a friend's ranch in southeast Colorado. It might be a surprise to some that MeatEater's longtime producer and resident elk guide has never killed a bull with his bow, but after years handling clients and cameras, it's finally Jani's turn to cut his tag.
You may have noticed Jason and Jani blowing on a new Phelps bugle tube in this episode, check out this link for more info on the new Met-Al Bugle Tube. bit.ly/3uHetEc

Two of the most down to earth dudes on an archery elk hunt....nothing could be better!
There's something serene and beautiful about the caller and the elk calling to each other. Doesn't get more primordial and natural than that.
Never hunted a day in my life but this is my favourite show to watch
Get after it!
agreed!
You should start! we’re always looking for new folks.
same here lol, i geuss living in ireland the gun laws and restriction are more strict and make it more diffucult to just go out and do it
@@diarmok1549 move to canada, we got big animals.
I love the production style of this series. No over hyping things, it just lets the content speak for itself
It's always a good day when meat eater has something to say.
Phuck yes
Nothing against him, but I’m own hero when it comes to archery elk. I don’t idolize anyone
This video reminds me of late season spring gobbler hunting. Calling, calling no answer, stumble into birds. Lol
I know I can confidently click like before I've even started watching.
Nice birthday prezzie, thanks guys.
Now we have to wait for part 2 damnit
I’d like to see more of the archery hunting like this
Wow. Great episode. I'd say one of the best. My adrenaline started pumping with this one. Phelps is a beast with those calls. Great job to all of you guys. As usual.
I love that you guys were trouncing around my neck of the woods......that comes in second to seeing you enjoy the banquet beer.......
Awesome content!!!!!!
It gets me so pumped every time I watch one of these exspecially archery elk!
Shout out to them Pe Ell dudes! Great stuff Jay!
Thanks Ronnie.
Never miss the episode
Jason's skills in calling is amazing. Watching that strategy of cutting off their call with his work in real time was *chef's kiss*
I remember hearing Remi recommend doing that in an episode of his podcast. I also remember Remi saying if an elk is really close you can start pissing on the ground and that'll get them real mad lol.
I guess it's kinda off topic but does anybody know a good place to stream new series online ?
@Xzavier Bridger flixportal :D
@Bennett Tobias thanks, I signed up and it seems like a nice service =) I really appreciate it!!
@Xzavier Bridger you are welcome xD
It's nice to see Meateater expanding.
Good to see Jason with the meat eater crew
Part 2 is gonna be good!!
Phelps is a great addition to the team. Love it!!
That was the most intsnse episode yet idk why i just was.
Janis has that Matthews VXR. Nice bow . I have a black VXR 28 and I love that thing.
“Winds Perfect”..
as Phelps uses windicator ,
and it blows strongly up to the Bugling Elk.. hahah
By far the most exciting MeatEater video I have seen!
MINNNNGGGGGUUUUUUSSSSSSSSSS
Awesome video can't wait for part two!!
Jani and Cal are bad ass dudes.. happy hunting all!!
Janis with the discipline and killer narration. Great episode
I wasn't even there and my adrenaline started pumping a bit. Dang, that would be exciting!
13:45 one of the best and quickest ways I've heard it explained. (thermals)
Instant click when I see Janis!
Key hunting accessory..... a Jason
Loved this! Can’t wait for episode 2!!!
That was a lot a fun
Thanks for this
Full pro. Fastest 22 minutes, flew by.
wow what a ep :)
Great show, never heard of Phelps calls, here in Alberta we use a local guys calls Wapiti River Outdoors Travis Oshea, makes great calls too.
I really can't wait till September!
Hunting with bjorn ironside.... great!!!!
Honestly baffles me how you have 5000 views but only 500 likes this is top notch content and should be treated as such
Very good calling for sure. My buddy Darren Kalin in Alberta is probably the best caller I've ever heard and a very successful hunter, especially bow hunting.
Good luck Janis, love me some meat eater episodes
Having elk hunted with Janis, in his mind he is saying "Dude you're calling too much!!" Can't wait to see part 2.
Oh really? Does he not call a lot usually?
@@ZandMb lots of soft cow calls mainly. He called in my 360+ bull I shot at 7 yards. He didn’t bugle one time the entire hunt. Never had or carried a bugle tube.
@@TheBowdoc1 that’s awesome!! Sounds like a great hunt. Thanks for sharing the story.
Great episode as usual 👏
Thanks for another episode
Sweet Kifaru Jason is wearing!
Lovin these!! Plz keep em comin 🙏🙄
Whales are my favorite creatures on this Earth and it's crazy how these vocalizations from land animals sound almost identical. My mind is blown. (that part around 5:00 )
“ hide” he was stood in the open
Hey Janis, I don't know if you will read this, but my first archery bull elk (on my first archery bull hunt) is in my profile picture, and it came 6 weeks after I got the Elk Nut app. Nobody, not even Mr. Phelps, has the elk language down like Paul Medel, the ElkNut. No offense to Jason, he has his own style and kills some bulls. But if you want to call in 90 plus % of the bulls you see or hear, get the app. It is that good. And Paul hunts heavily pressured OTC units in Idaho. Check out the podcasts that he was a guest on. You won't regret the immense amount of knowledge that you will gain. Good luck this year. Great video by the way.

nburlingame, I downloaded it last night. It’s overwhelming so far. I’m going to be using it and practicing now until September. I like Phelps diaphragms the best. They are just narrow enough for me.
@@latorgator23 there is a lot to learn, but study it everyday. I have a 40 minute commute to work, and I listen to my Bible in the morning and Elk nut podcasts in the evening. He uses stories and sometimes gives some helpful tidbits that are not on the app. It's also more entertaining:-) I also started using Phelps gray amp last year and it is really easy to use. The most important takeaways I can tell you, is to use a proper setup so the elk cannot see you until they are in shooting range. Obviously this works best in timbered country. Once you understand what they are saying, you will know how to respond. The nervous grunt is the best sound you can use to stop an elk in your shooting Lane, without spooking them. They will stop on a dime. I have yet to see a CZcams video where anyone uses a nervous going to stop an elk. I Did It For My Buddy last year on a five-point in about a 3-foot opening window. He nailed him. And then a tip that I think is in the app, but I picked up from a podcast is to give a nervous grunt followed by a harsh Roundup bugle right after you shoot when they are running away, which is kind of calling them out to step up and settle the dispute. It will get them to stop. I did it on my bull that I shot and he stopped at a hundred yards and laid down and died in about a half an hour. My buddies bull ran 50 yards, stopped and lay down and died in 2 minutes
Wow! Nice hunt! Thanks!
Bucket list hunt for me for sure.
Awesome love the meat eater videos...
Amazing! Thank you MeatEater team!
Camping out on a hunt sounds so cool. Can’t do it on public land where I live.
Just got his book today
Good thing that spike couldn't hear the banjo music!!
that statement of have 2 hours to kill 1 in the morning an 1 in the evening is a great saying
Good show
You need to check their drink zone probably.
Saludos desde Atlanta mui bonitos paisajes hermoso ejemplar
Ol phelps there grew up chasing rosies he can probaly make hunting rocky mt elk look like a joke dude haha
Man...when that bull came strutting in...I stopped breathing lol.
Spoiler
I wonder if like two hunters ever call each other with their calls and think it's an elk and end up face-to-face
Welcome to the club Janis. Beautiful. Your old boss was wrong. I've also recently takes my first red deer, and took one at midday and one at 3pm in high NZ summer. Get after it (quietly) thankyou for this. Keep it up and stay the f*@$% outta dem USA cities for a while. Buy a few more shafts Me a string or three... Cheers for the whacking day stick action, will try it one roar.last walk with the bow I had maybe a dozen hinds barking in a circle around me in dense bush, back n forth as the movies around the hill and me. So many good bits of info, the crispness of dry bark, love that craft
This guy could be a body double for Bjorn Ironsides.
Saw the tiktok about this so you know i had to check it out
I didn’t know bjorn ironside knew the MeatEater boys!
HAHA
That looks great ty & your spot on about racism all the best
It's Long tong Janis!
I hope to meet this Crew someday. Steve Rinella influenced my entire life when he came out with MeatEater & Wild Within. I hope to hunt with him someday- Id give my duck decoys to just have a beer with him and BS for a few Hours😂❤️
In bear country you might pack a portable electric bear fence. A compact 2.4 lbs for huge peace of mind.
Your budy is like to BJORN of vikings😀
Bruh I want a Mathews bow so bad
You need to come to Yakutia to find out what real hunting and fishing is
there is no better call than the maverick. Don't @ me
In the mountains there’s a thing called thermals lol, thermals are everywhere bud
Just out of curiosity how many acres is the ranch??
i watch the netflix siries called meat eater and its awesome
The other guy looks like bjorn from Vikings lol
hahaha. I get that quite a bit.
The Latvian Lover rides again...
Are you guys using the new aluminum bugle tube on this hunt?
We are
According to Meat Eater's page THIS IS NOT Season 2 EP 1
Whoever said there's only 2 hours of the day to kill elk is a salty, old-school guide that has NO IDEA how to call. Lol
You just can't bet meat of the land
".. or busy as a producer of Meateater.." aka Steve hogging the hunting time.
That was a terrible fence repair at the beginning! My dad would have killed me if I did that to a wire fence!
Good stuff fellas. Jason made Janis put that pink AMP in his mouth, nice try. I’m looking forward to part 2. 🤘🏼
He just knows how to pick a good call
I think I saw a red call (likely Maverick) in his mouth in episode 2 after calling in a bull for you, Jason. Are you thinking the bull would have taken the extra step with the pink?
🇧🇷👍
♡✌
Robert from Lunkers tv tried bow hunting elk in Colorado and Rioduso New Mexico, but no luck. I think sniping elk is more easier for him, because he is a sniper.
Exactly why he went bow hunting. He knows he can shoot one from 500 yards away. 😂
@@JustinDragonClaw Oh yeah, that's right! I just wish him better luck for 2021 and 2022 elk season
@@johnsalazar245 Oh yea, for sure. I’m striking out on my first elk hunt this year hopefully. I put it for Colorado elk second rifle. Hopefully I draw that tag. Coming from Louisiana there will definitely be a learning curve. 😂
Ever since his high fence BS with Outlaw, I haven't watched any of those dudes. No respect for any those clown ass, wannabe hunters. 👎
@@TaCtiCaL323 when was this? I’ve watched a few of those hunts.
Always wondered how to get a flat iron steak out of the shoulder of an elk. Hope you show the whole process!! Sry youtube get over it....
No range, just standing there! Seems like a bad set up for that first elk maybe I'm wrong
Hunting with Bjorn Ironside.
Oberyn Martel hunting
HE SAID “PRODUCING METEOR” SHUT IT DOWN
hows an outfitter call antlers horns?
THIS . . . all of this . . . is EXACTLY what The Creator intends. Life!
