Lumina is amazing, I didn't like the rest of Symphobia series myself (never tried Pandora) but some of the stuff found in Lumina is really hard to find elsewhere.
The soloists are insane too, cheesy maybe but when they're the right ones you won't find a better option

I''m a happy amateur and I've bought Symphobia & Symphobia 2 for a good price. I love the sound of your libaries and hope to add Lumina, Swing & Swing More one day. But first I need to make more music myself. That's what can happen when you don't have to make anything for anyone but yourself unfortunately. Still happy to support a Dutch company as a Dutch though. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for sharing your additions. I have most of the products you mentioned in this video, and I’m well-acquainted with Lucie Treacher’s past work with Spitfire; but I was unaware of her Folklorica libraries. I appreciate the introduction. I’m checking them out now.
Also, while I agree that Symphobia 4: Pandora is well-suited for horror music, I also use it in a wide variety of contexts (sports and action music, to name two) for its synced crescendos, drum rolls, and other tonal and percussive elements. Like you said, its sync abilities make it very easy to use; and ProjectSAM consistently makes great sounding products.

Hello and thank you very much for this fascinating review :)
I've come to the same point as you concerning what libraries offer as an instrument. Having at least 5 strings libraries doesn't make me happier. It can be handy at times but I also want more emotive, inspiring textural, felt sounds.
This is how we can create more surprising and personal palettes.
Orchestral Tools has a ton of great instruments to match this quest and I love being able to buy a few instruments out of any of their collections.
You make an excellent point with the topic of synchronization and length control when it comes to aleatoric libraries.
I don't mind unfolding some sounds but at a certain point, it becomes frustrating and very limited.
I'm going to check out your links and watch your video again ; it's a pleasure to listen to you speaking of all these subjects.
Have a beautiful day and stay safe.

Great video Anne. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. Lucie is or was a Spitfire affiliated composer, but I didn’t know she made her own stuff - a fascinating discovery for me and yes, the Spitfire Player is a terrible resource hog. Their Kontakt libraries don’t behave that way. I hardly use their stuff anymore. I use and enjoy 8DIO libraries for specific things but their patches load so slowly (even after batch resaving) that I try to use other alternatives where possible.

Yes about Spitfire. I have too many of their libraries that want to eat up my processor and memory. I need to start looking other places for libraries that do similar things, but don’t beat up my computer. And that’s across the board with Spitfire. The moment I start working with all of the microphone choices, my computer and their software start a power struggle argument. Not fun.

Also not huge on Strezov's Storm Choirs, but Wotan and Freya pretty much get used in place of everything else for myself. Definitely keep experimenting with them, they are very deep, but I struggled at first to "get" them, now they are the first choirs I reach for, if they can't do what I need, its usually because I need something way more outside the norm.
Loved your video, got me interested in the ProjectSam Stuff!

I also have alot of issues with Polaris from Spitfire Audio. My guess is that it has some memory leaks going on, cause it tends to get worse the longer it's loaded for me. I have the same problems with LABS. My DAW is Reaper, and it's very rare that it crashes on me, but LABS shuts down Reaper every single time i load it and change instrument a couple times. No other plugin does that for me, not evern Polaris. It's such a shame, cause there's alot of cool things in both Polaris and LABS that i want to use.

    • @AnneKathrinDernComposer
      @AnneKathrinDernComposer  Před 9 měsíci +1

Native Instruments also has another XY pad-based instrument called Mysteria -- it's just like Thrill (and also made by Galaxy Instruments) but instead of instrument AFX it's based on vocals/choirs. Also, another XY pad instrument I really like is Morphestra 2 by Sample Logic -- MSRP is $299 but keep an eye out for a sale; I got it for ~$99 a couple years ago

I actually tried using Spitfire's engine today, before I saw your video, and to be honest, I felt kind of relieved that you had the same experience. I thought I had some issues with my computer and spent hours of upgrading drivers, tweaking Cubase, tweaking voices, preload size and buffer size until I gave up. I couldn't use more than a few tracks before it clogged up my computer.
Kontakt and the SINE player runs smooth as butter, the cpu meter barely moves.
I've had my eyes on Polaris for a while, but I'm still not sure if I'll invest in it unless Spitfire fixes their engine or converts back to Kontakt.

I frequently use Spitfire libraries in my projects. Notably their more interesting ones, like Solstice, LCO Strings, Iceni, and the Abbey Road Legendary Low strings. Polaris has become my absolute favorite, I've used it on every single project I've done. That said...I've also noticed that the Spitfire Audio player is a massive resource hog. particularly CPU usage. I've not had the dropout problem you face with Polaris...though I don't have a template that size. I tend to create a skeleton template that I customize on a per-project basis, rather than a large template. But I've got that SAME problem with all VSL libraries. Like you, my computer is very powerful, however, I can't use even a single instance of a VSL library without it clipping and dropping out due to CPU spikes.

I'd love to make the switch to Orchestral Tools stuff instead. Maybe one day.

Thank you, Anne Kathrin, for donating your time to us "mere mortals". I will not use any Spitfire product, regardless of sound quality because: 1. Salami business model. The slices get thinner and more expensive all the time, and now they try to sell us the old sausage for almost the price of a fresh one ("vintage" Albions ...) . 2. The Player. Non multitimbral, no purge function, no editing. Resource hog? I managed to get 30 something instances of BBCSO Discover to mimic the overture of Bizet's "Carmen" on a now 13 year old iMac. No hiccups at all. But the library would probably not be demanding on a few AKAI S1100. 3. A marketing hype that does not match the quality of the products.Way too much money spend on bling bling than on their products (debugging, improving). I'm glad Lucie Treacher got out of there. She is a real gem, albeit a real quirky one. I like her approach to composing a lot.

Just finished your video, and saw the comments on Spitfire Audio's Polaris. Maybe it's not their player in general --- I have a project that consists of 18 instances of their BBCSO, and it runs at a range of 9-18%, and every track has a lot of controller data associated with it. Maybe, in your case, it is the effects you mentioned. I don't have Polaris, so I'm not sure. I do have Solar/Mercury, and it does seem to use more than its fair share of CPU. I have another project (part of a test that I am doing) that has 50 tracks, 50 different VIs from all the major players, and my DAW lets me look at (and sort) the CPU usage for each VI. Solar tops the list in CPU, just a touch higher than UVI's player, Omnisphere, and/or Augmented Grand Piano (Arturia).

Some Spitfire instruments DO eat a bit too much CPU. Thanks for the advice

Hi Anne. I guess I might be answering my own question, but these libraries like the horror sounds or these beefy percussion samples. They obviously cannot be notated for live instruments. Do you score the live strings and/or other orchestral instruments and then add the synth textures later? Or are you just using them for gigs that remain in the box? I know you mentioned recently that you were doing more music for games. All quite intriguing.

I do all the midi stuff in Cubase but I’ve definitely used the mic and mix page a lot in the Superior Drummer interface to get the sound I want.

Regard to what you said about Spitfire. I have a laptop with core i7, 256GB and an external drive 1TB. I use mostly BBC SO core, Abbey Road One and a couple of other libraries from Spitfire. I agree with you that it is no fun, due to all time that goes on for just waiting and waiting!!
Do you have an alternative good library for BBS SO core, I would be greatful.

its always the effects that kill the CPU xD
I have all be it a lower end Mac right now but I am not doing any major audio stuff.
but I have a few snap heap presets that that will completely crush the CPU & all I hear is broken glitched distortion...
even the 12900ks rig it can only take one of the snap heaps & I have to freeze the rest or better yet just bounce out what I need a open a new project to use it xD

I have a lot of Spitfire libraries both in Kontakt and their own player. I don't think their own player is all that much of a resource hog. But I don't think it's the most efficient player out there either. I suspect the issues you've had are related mostly to the Polaris library. I have that one as well but just haven't really found that much of a use for it yet, so I haven't tried it a lot. I also don't use big templates for my work, so if I was using it, there is probably a lot less going on in my Nuendo project file than folks like yourself that use large templates for their work. That's not an excuse, just a gut suspicion of why there hasn't been a lot of folks complaining about that. My biggest complaints about the Spitfire player are it's waste of screen space, the big knob interface is often worthless and hard to use and then they duplicate those same controls elsewhere on the screen. It's also worth noting that they only recently moved what they call their eDNA engine (originally in Kontakt) to their player. I wonder if that has something to do with your experience? I find that eDNA engine to be rather convoluted frankly. Too many little damn knobs to suck up huge amounts of time playing with. But to each their own. The other thing that annoys me about their player is that it's not multi-timbral. So you can't put multiple instruments in a single instance or even layer a few different sounds together without mixing multiple instances all together in your DAW. Pain in the butt.
