PSA for anyone doing a lipstick declutter: If you have a beloved, expensive lipstick that has a sentimental attachment, you can easily swap in a fresh lipstick to the old bullet. Put both lipsticks in the freezer over night and you can literally just pop one out and pop another in. I've managed to hang onto all my favorite bougie lipstick bullets this way. The other thing is that we've all heard from various youtubers (not Hannah) that they "should" declutter lipstick when it smells like a crayon. When the perfume smell has dissipated from a bullet lipstick, it doesn't mean it's gone off. If it smells like a crayon it is because for all intents and purposes that's what it is: wax + pigment. If your lip product had some kind of oil or fat in it that could go rancid then it will smell like rancid oil, it it's truly off. I get that it changes the experience of using the product but I see a ton of youtubers saying a lipstick has gone off when it smells like a crayon. If you are a normal mortal with a normal makeup collection, then you can hang onto that weird lipstick color you only wear once a year without fear of it being spoiled. Glosses and liiquid lipstick actually do go off readily and have a shorter shelf life, which for me is one of the reasons I own like two glosses and one liquid lipstick.

The issue is that when a product changes smell, something is breaking down inside it which means bacteria is at play. If the smell, texture, or color of a product has changed, regardless of the type of product, you should discontinue use. This is not the same as wax bloom (which typically only occurs in poor quality makeup with unstable ingredients... even if it comes from a bougie brand (I'm looking at you Bobbi Brown)). Wax bloom won't change the color that applies, but make the bullet cloudy in appearance... but if you swatch something on your hand and the color seems off, discontinue use. Unlike with eye makeup, the repercussions likely won't be devastating but who really wants acne on or around their lips from using old lip products that have become contaminated. Bullets kept in a temperature controlled, humidity controlled, and light controlled environment can last YEARS. I have a bullet that still smells like new that's over a decade old. I however have bullets that arrived smelling nasty. 1 huge reason for not ordering makeup in the summer!
Definitely agree with swapping bullets! I've done this with Mac lipsticks where the color is a standard color but the packaging was LTD... so when the bullet is busted/used up... just swap them out and back to mac the basic packaging. I also have bougie bullets that are beautiful works of art but the lip product went off or got busted or used up beyond a point I was willing to put in the effort for so I've just cleaned them out and they're displayed as art in my space.

Thank you! I'm old enough to remember when practically every lipstick, except expensive high end brands, smelled like crayons all the time. I personally think most makeup lasts far longer than any company wants to let on and I've never gotten sick or had a reaction from using my own old makeup. 🤷‍♀️

Have you thought maybe of turning the more attractive/sentimental pieces into wall art? For me, I can feel bad getting rid of something aesthetic and sending it to a land fill, so I've started creating mini shelves or shadow boxes to display those types of things. I've ended up noticing that they have started trending towards memory moments - ie there aren't just shelves with just lipstick, but instead, over time, become more curated items of a memory genre. For example, I might make a shelf from a time when I lived in Alaska and it will have a framed cut out of clothing (like a logo attractive stitching segment) with a shelf of trinkets, nature, jewelry I don't wear anymore, concert subs, that sort of thing. I really enjoy having those memory moments around me, especially in my creative spaces. Also, lolol, disclosure: I have AuDHD and so I attach memories to objects, yet object permanence is a real struggle 🤦🏼‍♀️ FML, for sure, but this is a way that I find both can coexist and bring me joy 😊

Yesss to this! I do the same thing and keep an “archived makeup” section for the same reason of creating something like a time capsule. I know there are other ways to remember and cherish memories without physically keeping the item but I think I am a tactile person and being able to hold them in my hand just hit different lol. Also I was watching videos of vintage makeup collectors and I was inspired at how one could learn so much story/history about that person or time period even with such old items. I even like the idea of passing on some cosmetic items to descendants just as something to be cherished rather than used. It is like a mini museum but a personal one.
I guess it makes sense for people like Hannah to declutter even the more sentimental items because she gets sent products often which can lead to an over abundance that prevents her from enjoying each item. But for the rest of us that are average makeup consumers, I think it’s okay to have a few items here and there that we keep just for the sentimental value regardless of their usability. As long as the collection isn’t excessive and most items get into rotation, I don’t see a problem with it.

I just went through a lipstick declutter and it’s amazing how hard it can be doing it and then how relieving it is afterwards. I got rid of about 10 lipsticks and currently only have 4 left. I had to throw out Chanel / Urban Decay / YLS, I was so mad with myself for paying that much money only to throw it out cause they had gone bad. Now I want to keep it below 5 and only purchase something else once I’ve used something up.

This is a big reason why I watch dupe videos and I've found a close formula dupe for my favorite formula that even dupes my favorite color exactly... $9 rather than nearly $40 for a lipstick. Is another good reason to keep fun colors limited to drugstore brands IMO. My black liquid lip and my bright purple lipstick are both drugstore brand because they only get worn a few times a year. But we've all had that happen so don't feel alone. Also, UD lipsticks go off quickly. Most of mine started smelling rancid in less than a year! and I've got drugstore lipsticks that are over a decade old and still smell new! Unfortunately, lots of brands as they try to greenwash themselves and go "clean" are making less shelf stable products. I won't buy another UD lipstick. It's not worth the money. YSL might get me if the one I have ever goes off and there's one Tom Ford color I've never been able to duplicate so I hoard the mini I have because of course its not one of the boys and girls colors... its one of the colors that costs $54.

Great video! It's nice to see a makeup reviewer be candid about their purchases and thoughts post-first impressions/reviews.
A note on de-cluttering: Don't do it just to do it. Do it if you truly think you would benefit from less items/donating and giving stuff away. If you're happy with the size, items, and use of your makeup collection, that's fine! It's normal to keep things for sentimental value or special occasions? Everyone doesn't need to be a minimalist. Don't toss things that you enjoy and are perfectly fine just to say you did it. As Hannah said: "It's okay to keep things!"

I bought maybelline raw chocolate because I saw you lip swatch it last year, and it’s by far my most worn Lippie, even taking precedence over lipsticks that cost more than 10x as much (I snagged it for $4)! I’m considering popping it and a nicer lipstick component in the freezer and swapping them because I hate the lightweight/cheaper plastic packaging but that’s my only gripe. And for $4 I tolerate it lol because the shade is absolutely divine.

  • @Chaotic_Pixie
    @Chaotic_Pixie Před rokem +9

I try to avoid fancy packaging that makes it hard to toss in a hand bag. I think that's why you haven't used the dragon lipsticks. I also don't think a person can keep too many nourishing balms/tinted but nourishing balms. I keep one in my bag all the time, one bedside, one at my desk, and one with my project bag. I don't even count balms in my lippies because for me, they serve an entirely different purpose than a gloss even. I need to go through my lippies again. I got my full size products down to a reasonable amount this year (I declutter beginning of the year) but I still have too many minis. In theory, I love minis because they're the right amount of product but often the bullet is so thin they're hard to use. I'd love for a company to come out with a lipstick that's just as thick bullet wise but half the length with half as much needing to be shoved into the component... So in theory, you'd actually use more product because most people don't finish a lipstick before it goes bad unless its one of two or three that they own or they're specifically trying to pan it and therefore reapplying consistently and perhaps more than needed.

  • @suzannev.514

It's part of the process of making your relationship with your makeup collection a real thing with attachement to accept the fact that a product cannot be used anymore but can be still be part of your life, to consider them as old soldiers that are now in peace. I've kept products that were my precious back in highschool that i would never wear today and i've kept my mom's old eyeshadow palette when its gone bad because it's a real part of her for me, her habit of everyday. This product are not functionnal so they don't really belongs in the tool box that is a makeup drawer but that's also the good part of it. Having them as a decoration can be a great way to cherish thoose product and feel everyday this old attachement to them.
That's a bit to emotional maybe but my point is don't force yourself to keep only video clips of products you have deep connection with, you'll might regret it later i know that the feeling of objects are something that speaks to you

You’re right, I will never have the amount of makeup an influencer does. and so therefore following along and decluttering to the extreme that they do for me had created the opposite of positive feelings. This was a fantastic declutter, I myself had to do a really hard declutter last month and sit down with myself and understand that fantasy me that wears full makeup and bold lipsticks everyday is definitely not reality me that loves light coverage foundation with a bit of powder and mascara and really only use tinted lip balms and barely there color lip gloss and lip oil. Lol kept like 10 balm/gloss/oils one nude lipstick one red lipstick and I kept one red liquid lipstick to play with when I feel like being extra 😄

Omg, I remember stumbling upon Finding Ferdinand I think during the brands early start! I think I was a senior in high school or fresh out of high school, and making two mini custom lipsticks. It was such a fun experience and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone on here talk about them!

Question for u! Have you ever taken a “panning” position to your declutters. Some products I noticed u liked but had maybe one thing that wasn’t your favourite but u still liked and have used! Maybe like putting those in front and centre to use it up instead of getting rid?

Hannah - be kind to yourself! I want the color of the Summer Friday’s tube that you put in the declutter. 😭 It stays out of stock on Sephora. By the way, the please smell all the Tower 28 products or the ‘clean’ products. They seem to go bad REALLY quick for me. I think it’s because they don’t have preservatives.

the dosas sport in clear is genuinely my favorite lip balm ever, it was my first "big girl" purchase in the sense of allowing myself to buy a pricer lip balm (aka not Burts bees) and only allowed to buy more things after knowing id not lost the tube. I never let go of it. I will say its a bit minty though, which you did say you didnt love so I do warn that. Genuinely my favorite balm ever though.

They are so worth it! I did a declutter recently and I got rid of alllll of my lip color products except the merit lipsticks and lip oils and tower 28 glosses. I had quite a few products- including ones I coveted for years and they became disposable to me once I purchased the Merit ones. That’s how good they are.

I finally did a major declutter this year. I'd been putting it off for a couple years. But I'm really glad I did! I don't miss a single product and now I can love on the items I actually want to use. I still have more than I need, but I'm going to just use them and get rid of them when they expire.

If you ever find a dupe for Gone Greige, would you consider to make a video about it because I can’t find it where I live for the life of me and I am always trying to find a color like this ( it’s like brands are allergic to this type of color 🥲). I swear (without cheking so i might be horribly wrong) last year you had almost no lipsticks, just gloss and now you have 4 xD. Also i swear (also with no back up) that those revlon lipsticks are from 2019 so pre pandini. I think i was having a lil staycation before they were a necessity and watched that drugstore haul while eating falafel alone at my hotel room. So mink was old.

I like hearing your reasoning about products. One thing though, I'm almost all the way through and you've decluttered all of the drugstore lippies. Would you consider in the future adding some new drugstore products to your collection? That way there is a chance you would keep one of those instead of a merit or a gucci.

I've watched her for a while and, in my opinion, she has a bias toward high end over drugstore. 🤷‍♀️ Some of the products she enjoys and recommends are worth it, but some are just meh. I go through too many lip products to spend high end $$ on them.
