  • In this video I will unbox my new microphone stand. This video is 100% unedited so you can get a real first impression at how this stand is. I should mention since the making of this video I have discovered the stand is much better than I thought! You can extend it and it has little clips for the wires. This is the Gator Frameworks Short Weighted Base Microphone Stand with Soft Grip Twist Clutch.

This is the less expensive GFW-MIC-0821 model (about $42), where the base is HOLLOWED-OUT and only weighs 5 lbs (which is still pretty substantial). This GFW-MIC-0821 model also has very little counter-weight on the boom arm and the whole stand/assembly only weighs 7 lbs (again, pretty hefty). However, the more expensive model (GFW-MIC-0822) sells for about $60, but has a SOLID base that weighs 10 lbs by itself and comes with a 2.5 lb counter-weight on the boom arm, for a total weight of 14.5 lbs for the whole stand/assembly. Both are great stands, but the extra $18 for the GFW-MIC-0822 model is well worth it IMHO, especially for heavier mics and/or if you need more extension on the boom without sacrificing stability. The GFW-MIC-0822 is an absolute BRUTE of a mic stand! Like most things, the decision between the two models really comes down to application and budget. Great video BTW; very informative!

I have the Gator GFW-MIC-0822 Desktop Podcasting Telescoping Boom Mic Stand and it appears to be a bit longer and heavier, and I can't see mine to ever fall. Built like a rock.

You made me realise there is way more to know about mic stands than i realised. This is a bit painful to watch but thanks for the video i wanted to see how it looks. Don't turn anything on it and don't adjust the boom angle without loosen it first because it will damage it over time.

You need to use the boom arm end as a counter balance...making it shorter will give less strain..you can buy screw-on counter balancing weighted handles/end's for the boom arm, might work if the boom end screws off...they are good stands but got to get the balance right, the weight of the mic x boom arm length & handle/end weight ...if the boom handle/end screws off you can buy 2kg -10kg metal screw on counter balance handle's/end's....seen them on A***** & E***....👍

I think the model with the counterweight would be better...or a Rode PSA1+

They also make a counter weighted version…or you could hand a bag of salt from it 😂

Still using it! I used it yesterday and the day before to make some videos for my other youtube channels. I think it works great. You do have to have it a certain way otherwise the Shure mic I use falls a little because it's so heavy, but honestly it works GREAT. I think it's better than the kind you clamp to your desk. I have a much thicker desk now and so a clamp would not be as easy(plus it's a hassle to clamp and unclamp). But yea, so far so good! I love it;)

I just started recording vo in my car. This would be great to sit between my two front seats while I sit in the back. Could I fit my shotgun mic with a shockmount on this ? Or a rode nt1a ? Thanks.
