- Last year we were looking to buy another VW Camper and went in search of the next big thing. Would the VW Ocean be for us or will we make a huge life-changing dissision? This is a comparison between aftermarket and VW's own homemade model. is the cost worth it?

We went from a professional conversion (a very well designed layout) T4 to a T5.1 California.
Although ages of vehicles are different to your situation, I can highly recommend the switch!
Had our Cali for 3 years and it’s been absolutely brilliant, very clever when you dig deep into the design 👍🏼
I think nobody, including VW, will ever make a better campervan than my 6.1 California Ocean 4MOTION
Its been so long since posting anything and i am sad to say we sold our Van and cancelled the new Ocean to do an extension! i no doubt will get another one down the line. Thanks to everyone for watching.
I know someone with a T6.1 and 'was surprised to hear it doesn't have Bluetooth. The iPhone connects via a USB plug which works fine but the wire is unsightly given the amount of money spent.
Depends which head unit you get in it but the standard does need the cable.
@@tonyclark9392 'Not sure if it's relevant but it's a Shuttle. is the head unit easy to swap for a buetooth enabled one. It suprised me because I know he spent well over £30k on the van and the lead, in a brand new van, makes it look a little cheap.
@@SunshineMix101 they all have bluetooth so you can play music and answer your phone on the standard head unit. If you want to use apple car play or android then you need the cable. The larger multimedia unit is an expensive upgrade unfortunately. Not sure but think its in the £1000's.
@@tonyclark9392 His phone's an iPhone so that would explain it. Seeing him having to attach his phone every time he gets in the van seems more than just a little bit odd, especially given that he paid big money for van (£36+) but at that price I doubt he'll be doing anything about it.
You can add a Bluetooth unit to it for about £35. I don't mind using the wire as it keeps the phone charged
Its a tough call. I have the T6.1 from Needingworth so the slightly newer version of yours. The cockpit is better but I think the California is better quality. Probably worth it but the question as you say is will they hold the money. Hope it goes well.
Mines the old Needingworth version and I agree the interior that Steve does is allot better. It's just some small points that made the difference for us. There another video to come to reveal if we got one or not 😉
You’ll miss your cupboards above your worktop area believe me it’s a pain in butt bending down all the time and stuff in the bottom of the fridge good luck with your choice 😀
I did wonder about this, it's good for in the morning sitting in bed getting a coffee etc. And I wondered about what happens when I put lots of stuff ontop of the fridge and then want to get in to it.
Personally, things like the improved cockpit, the moving seats, the fully integrated control system, heating etc and the better roof bed means way fewer compromises. Way fewer reasons to not go away in it. Warranty on the van conversion, ability to replace/repair and get parts from VW. The number of people making components and add ons for the California means I have complete flexibility and peace of mind. The good thing is that these reasons are also what props up the resale values. The downside is that the van will not be unique and will look and feel like many other vans out there. If you want a machine which you can put your stamp on and design to your spec, then the after market converters are probably better and you'll get better value for money. However, when you start getting to the spec of the Ocean in an after market conversion, you are heading towards that £65k+ price point.
Especially when you start adding drawers and the shower at the back oh and the 18 inch wheels. I was looking at body kits too and lowering it. Heading towards 70K 😳
What’s the update? T6.1 or no 6.1?
