  • Here is a lecture/masterclass on developing a stream of income as a studio session drummer/percussionist while working strictly online. I do many of these types of projects annually and they normally supplement my performing and teaching income. In this time of pandemic shutdown these gigs are a true blessing since the music is recorded in a solitary fashion to be assembled at a later date. The projects consist of composers, arrangers, singer/songwriters and television/movie composers who are looking to put live drums and percussion on their recording projects. In many ways this is less expensive for them since they are not paying for studio time but are getting a studio sound as well as expert musicians to perform on their projects.
As a drummer you are usually the first musician to lay down your tracks on a developing project.
Many times all you get is a bare bones arrangement with a click and basic drum chart if that.
Therefore you have to take on much of the creative responsibility.
In this video I demonstrate one such recent project. I show you two contrasting big band tunes and explain how the project works as well as talking you through the charts. I also explain how I work with the artists and develop long term musical relationships with them.
The equipment I am using for this video consists of:
Doc Sweeney Stave Drums in African Olivewood
    20"x 16" Bass Drum
    Toms: 8"x 8", 10"x 8", 14"x 14 flloor tom"
    14"x 6.5" Snare Drum
    Cymbals are:
Paiste 22" Taditional light ride for King of the Road
Sabian Jack DeJohnette 20" Ride for the latin tune
paiste 22" Traditional swish for King of the Road
Wuhan 20" Lion Cymbal for the latin tune
Paiste Traditional 16" and 17" thin crashes
    Sabian HH 13" Regular Hi-Hats
    Sabian 12" AA Mini Hats
Heads on toms are Remo Pinstripes on toms
Bass drum is an Aquarian Power stroke 1 head.
Snare is a Aquarian coated head
Microphones are a AKG C24 stereo overhead and an Shure Beta 52 on the Bass drum

In my opinion, musically, technically and sound/gearwise, this is a mixture between a traditional jazz drummer and Vinnie Colaiuta. Very satisfying to watch!

Excellent, Rick! Loved King of the Road- the superimposition of the sheet music along with your playing on the drum-set, commentaries after.
    The best on the web.

This is incredible info, thanks for putting it out there. It would be amazing if the arranger would allow you to share the drumless tunes and charts for us to play with. Keep posting your playing and approach, absolutely brilliant :)
