      Forget about everything you heard here today. Do you want a raise? Ask your bosses what you can do to advance in the company and after a while come back and show them that you did everything they told you to do to advance in the company. Easy.

    How can people say he's sexist? He's genuinely giving girls in his class some of the best advice they will probably EVER hear. And he's doing it because he REALLY WANTS THEM TO DO BETTER FOR THEMSELVES. Not because it's the "right thing to say." What a guy.

      The gender pay gap is created both by a cultural view on what a women should do after having kids, and what women do to take in the role of a mom; why women with the same degrees and background are paid less each year after childbirth, which is why women without kids are paid practically the same as men. It’s not about how confident they are or agreeable, that is demeaning and pushing on misogyny. He is giving bad advice and statistically wrong advice, because if they ever have kids it won’t matter how agreeable they are or not.

In order to hold your viewpoint you therefore have to assert then also that you don't believe in psychology or science. So explain yourself.

      @@zipity2782 you are half right. the pay gap is largely influenced by the fact that women have children. egalitarian cultural views actually have a NEGATIVE association with pay equality, so you're also half wrong. but I also don't see an argument here. the pay gap can be influenced by the biological role of motherhood AND average difference in agreeableness. the only thing I think we disagree on is the cultural association you claim to correlate with the pay gap, which it doesn't, so there's really no argument here. thanks for your opinion!

    The first pay raise. I didnt talked about "money", i talked about functions and authority to exercise these: "Boss, I have duties that belong to a supervisor, yet I am not, so I cannot order people what to do as I cannot hire, fire nor evaluate anyone from the team". No talk about money as it was implied that a supervisor gets more. It was a brilliant move as I was made within 2-3 days.

      Sadly that doesn't work for me, because my pay depends on "complexity of duties" and it's hard to negotiate whether something is complex, very complex or exceptionally complex due to lack of any scale..
      Fortunately I get raises above the regular 2-3% anyways

    I had a job where I was the supervisor and later found out a person that I supervised was making more than me and also had been employed for less time than me. Pointing out the obvious discrepancy, I asked for a raise, but didn't get it. So I found a better job. When I turned in my letter of resignation, the boss immediately offered me a raise and a promotion. I politely declined; I'm not into playing those games.

I did ask for more pay at first, but was told because of my job description that I was maxed out. In a few months I was outta there. Never looked back.

      @@K9River I earn less than a grunt, but I’m either a foreman or supervisor; i assign tasks, train and lead a crew of machinists, while also getting dirty like them on top of overseeing the warehouse. ¿Do you know the pay-scale difference between those three ranks?

    My manager quit so they offered the position to me and showed me all the new extra tasks and responsibilities i would be doing so i asked "does this mean my pay will increase as well?" "no no no" they said so i declined the position and a week goes by and they still havent found a new manager so they bring me into the office and say look we'll increase your pay but if you make a single mistake, your gone" so i looked them dead in the eye and said "to error is human" got up and walked out and have been happier ever since.

    I was in management for 10 years finally got out of it cause I hated the conflict, I couldn't make everyone happy, and wanted my employees to like me even though I knew some of them hated me. I am an agreeable person. Peterson is spot on.

    I use to be agreeable, but when I went into high school I was fed up of being the nice one at my last school, and always saying yes to people and not telling people when I didn't like something. My life was so much less stressful and easy when I was just honest, and learned to say no, and stand up for myself, and now I'm a stronger person for it

      Nicole Girgis I started off with simple things like saying no to people borrowing a pen (without being mean) I also used to not just say I knew what somebody was on about just to not be disagreeable, and to seem "cool" .then I started becoming more assertive with a new found ability to tell people no to things. Then actually started becoming more respected as a person, and believe it or not made more friends

    This is true. I have gotten many raises and promotions simply by acting as if I was going to be walking out the door. The trick is not to "act" at all though. You actually have to be willing to leave if you are not given what you asked for. Same goes for getting the job in the first place. I have always found interviews to be fairly simple. I pretend in my mind that the job is already mine and that this is more of a performance review. You basically have to cultivate a persona lacking in any fear of unemployment and with the mindset that you are valuable. Easier said than done I suppose if you lack meaningful skills. Anyway. always remember that your employer isn't a benevolent entity that gives you money for no reason. They give you money because you are creating value for them, and when you realize that they are probably taking advantage of you to a grotesque degree it becomes easier to walk in the office with your dick swinging around and ask for what you deserve.

      very accurate and well put. the key to being able to walk at any moment and the confidence to do so (for me) is having savings, the financial ability to actually walk my happy ass out and know for damn certain i will be fine for months on end if needed makes it their kryptonite. they cant call me on my bluff, 'cause i ain't bluffing!

      Exactly, most of them just say “we are getting paid less and this is wrong” and I agree, but what they’re not concerned with is WHY these women are being paid less, because it’s literally illegal to pay someone less for the same work, so maybe they’re not doing the same amount of work, or maybe they are and aren’t making it clear to the boss that they are doing a lot of work, because a boss has to manage a whole lot of people, you can’t expect him to keep personal diaries of everyone

      That's always been the case. Much of what he talks about is based on his clinical practice. Specifically his practice dealing with women and career and pay. Women came to him to help their careers. And he's been overwhelmingly successful with them.

    Along these same lines, if your boss gives you a raise without being asked, do what you can to remain in good standing. Bosses that value their subordinates and don't view them as replaceable are incredibly rare and worth holding onto.

    - Be disagreeable, don’t agree with your boss when he tries to come up with reasons you shouldn’t get a raise
    -Present the Value you bring ,
    - Don’t underestimate your own value or let your boss underestimate your value
    - Point out if your boss is underestimating your value and how
    - Give your boss a reason and incentive to give you a raise that in some way offers benefits to them
    - Be willing to take on more responsibility
    - Don’t be mouthy or your boss will think you’re a son of a Bitch and not give you anything
    -Don’t be too agreeable or you won’t prioritize or achieve your own interests
    - Show a negative effect of you not getting a pay raise , without being mouthy or making threats .
    Example: I have worked as hard as I can and I need to see that that work wasn’t for nothing or it will kill my incentive to work hard. If I’m going to be a successful asset to this company I need to know that I’m in a company where I can grow and succeed , just as you want me to grow and succeed as an employee so the company can grow and succeed.

      “How can I be part of the Future of this company?”
      It will make them want to promote you already and even if they don’t they will see you as having higher value immediately because you are asking that kind of question.

    Around 2010, As a 19yo kid working at a chick fil a for about a year, I used this exact process and didn't even realize it. At first my boss thought I was quitting, and flat out asked me if that was the case. I said "no, I was actually going the other way. I'd like a raise." I was making $8 when minimum was $7.25.. I got a $2 raise on the spot, retroactive for the current paycheck (about a week and a half). Thats a 25% raise. The thing you need to think about before you ask for more money, is whether or not you're ACTUALLY doing a good job and not just going through the motions. Make sure you go above and beyond like it's your own business.

    I got a 30% increase in my full time pay offer as a software engineer and I used his exact method to do it. I didnt watch this video at the time but still did exactly what he discussed (spoke about what I have done and continue to do and other offers that i have received)

Is there any way we can match this?” They wont ask for proof but if they do you can say “its still a verbal offer and they will give me the written one if i choose to accept”

      @@nakukohee1858 It's kind of exaggerated, but Japanese are known to be extremely polite and respectful to their seniors including bosses. Kneeling is something you do when you're desperate in trying to convince someone to do you a favor.
      This is the general idea I used for the joke. I'm not Japanese so any Japanese out there feel free to correct me

    The best way to get a pay raise is to give your two weeks notice. Take a raise. Work for 1 more year. Then leave. That last year, will be the most liberating year you have ever had working. You will not care about reviews. Your boss will know that you have the will to leave and he will want to keep you. And you know it is a short term gig till your better job comes along.
    Quitting and/or getting fired can be the most liberating things in the professional world. I've had both happen to me and I've been better for it each time.

    My experience with jobs and working is to prove yourself without question and work hard. Keep everything totally unemotional and even robotic after you’ve proved yourself. Never break or snap but plant a seed that you aren’t content without saying it after directly mentioning you “require” a raise. Throw the ball into your bosses lap and move on. You have to be proactive and if the person isn’t going to accommodate you, keep outperforming people and make advancement happen. Never settle or allow the boss to think they are actually anything. Works every time for me.

    Schools and universities should offer negotiation classes and the comprehensive psychology that drives it. Everyone is different and the territory between agreeableness/disagreeableness is very nuanced from person to person and it's not a one-size-fits-all formula. Students/people may lack self knowledge and don't practice negotiation on an individual level. It's similar to learning an instrument but with the skills of debate. Trial and error is ok when you're learning but dangerous to attempt when your trying to survive in the real world.

Worse case scenario you are in a bad spot for a little there is a lot colleges should be doing that they are not doing. For instance getting someone six figures in debt for a career that doesn’t pay better than a HS diploma shouldn’t be legal. Especially in the manner they do it ie lying etc

      If a persons enters work with this attitude, the boss will kept looking for their in-aptitude and fire them when they can no longer keep up to the task.

    You tell your boss that they offered you more money to switch companies
    If they want to keep you, they will match it, if not well at least you know your value to them.. better start fresh in a new environment..

No body wants an employee that's worked at places an average of less than half a year... On paper it seems like the best and easiest way to get more money but you're just avoiding proper responsibility and eventually it will catch up with you.

      I round 15 months to 2 years, If I need to explain time , I just write " self employed" or "consulting"... or that I worked with a friend of mine who owns a company abroad..
      There are various ways around it, trust me... If you know how to do your job and have charisma during an interview.. its easy to get jobs..
      Only a small minority of employers actually bother checking, if they do check, they usually only check the last one...

    Its quite interesting, on the other hand in my company they have premade windows how much they are allowed and when they can give you a payraise. However does not matter your skill or how long you work for the company they prefer to let you go and hire someone new eventhough it means they loose money in the overall.

    I don't remember who but a CEO of a huge company said a tactic to also use when asking for a raise (if salary) is to ask for a weird number. If you make 68k for instance, and ask for 74k, they'll drop that to 70k in an instant, whereas let's say you instead ask for $74,437, for whatever reason dropping that down to 70k seems like too much, so they may drop it down 74k due to that. maybe 73 if reaching, but in the majority of cases they won't drop it down to 70k.

    I moved up in my company from a medical assistant to a registered nurse. The plan was to train me but my boss refused giving me a raise. On the day before I was to start training I emailed her with the pay range for RN’s in my area and asked
    For a raise. I got it. I had been told many times by my boss and hers that I was an asset to the company and a great employee but they were unwilling to show it with pay. I showed them that a fair wage was expected and I would have undoubtedly quit if it hadn’t been granted.

    I used these tips today, as well as tips from Chris Voss. Negotiated 10% higher than the offer, and I’ll tell you it was like pulling teeth. If they tell you it’s the max they’ll offer, don’t even acknowledge it, give more reasons of why you deserve more. If they keep coming back with the same amount, tell them you’ll think on it, and reiterate that it’s too low. I went back and forth 4 times before they finally bumped it to an acceptable amount (but still not what I asked)

    Most of the big organizations have a que system for the promotion ! Does not matter how much you write in yearly personal review, a good employee and an average/bad employee gets same raise averagely!

    Describing a problem is a good first step. Finding a solution to a problem properly identified is the tricky part. The truth about pay raises is that we are all competing for scarce resources. Best way to get a raise in pay is to go make more money. If you bring in $10 million dollars to a company that only earns $2 million dollars you have a really good chance of getting a nice raise.

    I've had 6 managers in 15 years after college (corporate environment):
    3 of them made uninformed decisions and biased judgements, as well as showed little interest in hearing the details of the effort made that would otherwise prove and justify a merit increase.
    1 actually listened and provided feedback---but ultimately only focused on their own progression.
    1 was somewhere in the middle.
    Regardless, with each new manager, it seemed like starting all over again in terms of proving yourself. Because most of them weren't really listening nor cared, it truly was starting over. Despite their level of consideration and concern for their employees (well, at least for me and what I could perceive over time around me), somehow every manager was still promoted to the next level of management within the standard 2-3 year timeframe. Any additional time and effort made by a good manager was not met with additional reward. I've found this to be the norm, not the rare exception. It is a terrible reality that feels impossible to change without a top-down approach from the very top, and it isn't magically incentivised from anywhere in the middle. It certainly isn't incentivised organically via bottom-up through human integrity and good concience.
    Upper management dolts, identify better employees for the development and management tracks. Yes I said it. You're a bunch of dolts, who might actually benefit your companies through regular doses of undercover bossing, and an accompanying spine, to obtain actual truth, rather than making decisions based on the bullshit you're fed by your direct reports, who you've ignorantly incentivised and groomed to become good at spinning failures as victores in your progress update sessions. Well, I suppose you weren't an originating founder and see retirement approaching before long, so who gives a damn, right?

    The key to making decent money is to work for a decent employer to start with. If you work for an employer that's unwilling to pay a decent wage don't beat your head against the wall explaining why you deserve a raise. Use that energy to look for a different job. Im tellin you. Inless you have no other option get out of there as soon as possible.

    powerfully and resolutely. NEVER accept a counter offer. Many employers will wait and then let the employee go. Employers have fragile self images and want to show others how much control they have. You take an offer, accept, and give your notice. Your current employer says No, no, no... here is another $20,000/year and an extra week of vacation (too good to be true) because they know in three to six months they are going to sack you. People do not leave companies they leave managers. Ask yourself if you like your employer but not your boss. Transfer to another department - that will one day look good to another company. If it really is your boss AND your company, move on.

    I got it by simply saying to my self enough is enough and prepared to leave if i was refused a pay raise. I took into account what i do for the company and the companies margins and if they cant afford a small $2 raise only $80 more a week than i wouldn’t have a future there anyways because if $80 is going to kill them they arnt doing so well. Also it was way over due.

    I've been on the same exact salary for 2 years with no cost of living or annual increase. They force us to sign Annexures to our contracts which have us sign up for longer hours & more responsibilities but no increase in pay. I only have 5 days of leave a year with the other 16 days being automatically deducted for the December holidays. We are also expected to work weekends and be ready for work 7 days a week (meaning, we aren't allowed to have any alcohol or drugs in case they call us for last-minute plans for events/shows). No pay on weekends. They said they cannot afford to give us raises yet they've created 6 new job openings for graphics designers, a Producer and a few interns. My supervisor has fought for a raise and the only thing they could give me was Fuel claim at a rate of 3.61. So now I just drive a lot more during each month (outside the radius of 25km) just to claim fuel money (you always get a few extra cash with each claim) just to use that as an increase.

    Here's how I did it. I'm putting in my 2 weeks notice. I found an opportunity I have to take. I make this much, the new opportunity pays this much plus a sign on bonus. Took them 2 weeks to offer to match. Due to circumstances, it's best and more responsible to stay where I'm at. But I regret not leaving when I had the chance. It was a 25% raise. And I kill it with overtime pay.

      @James Hunt I regret staying where I am because it's a toxic environment to be in. We were a family owned business. The family sold to a Venture Capitalist firm. They ran us hard into the ground for 4 years. Then after tripling our value, they sold us to an even bigger VC firm. Then after the last 2 years of being run into the ground even more, they merged us with another company they owned.
      The merger happened 2 months after I decided to stay. I stayed because they matched the offer that I got from the other company. I have 3 weeks vacation. It's a 15 minute commute to work. And I work in the industrial waste disposal industry. Which is pretty safe in terms of recession, depression or manufactured crisis, like Covid. I'm not sure, but I don't think many knew the merger was happening. Except the CEO. Who was more of a traditional do nohing but send what he perceives as inspirational emails and fleece the company for money and take all the credit CEO's. Because he left the day of the merger. The COO, left 2 months after the merger. The hiring manager left 2 weeks ago. The CFO left last week.
      Nothing really changed in the 6 years except the massive employee turnover and more work and the frequency and quality of raises. Although we have slowed down considerably, which could be a company policy/philosophy change, or it could be that since the CEO is gone, the of pushing sales to the breaking point of man, machine and the facilities is no longer the emphasis. Or we may be changing our pricing model to the reflect current market, as we've been at break even or low profit margins due to family owned handshake deals from when we were family owned. Or people are skeptical to work with us due to the merger and a new name. Or maybe the market has stabilized after the Rollercoaster ebb and flow of Normal, Covid, Rebound, Burnout.
      But since the merger, new supervisor's are being brought in from outside or other holdings, instead of promoting from within. Changes to payroll and other things. It totally fits within the scope of Josh's corporate cringe videos.
      So, I have a few plans to take care of, but look to get out by the end of 2021.
      The company I was leaving for, is still hiring, at a slightly higher pay rate. It's in a pretty safe industry as well.
      But I regret the decision to stay more and more every day, and I let everyone around me know it. Lol. Because I'm kind of hard to replace. I am replaceable, but it would be hard for them. Easier to keep me and pay more and put up with my horrible attitude, as I show up every day and do everything asked, stay late etc. It's all over time pay, so I'm compensated pretty well.
      So I get away with saying things like:
      That's extra, and my policy is that I don't do extra.
      I'm not here to work, I'm here to get paid.
      Everyday I'm here is the worst day of my life.
      I'm not here to sweat or get wet
      This place is a destitutional shit hole of doom from which there is no escape.
      Etc.
      Good times.

    This is kinda what I did naturally when I was asked to stay permanently for a contract job. I negotiated for $2 more per hour and ended up getting $1.50 instead.
    I knew to aim high and not mind a scale back in my request. It's interesting because despite being new and under qualified, I ended up making more than the woman who trained me. She's been there longer than me AND has the college degree for the job while I didn't. This woman in particular was very agreeable and I just don't see her seeming confident enough to ask for a pay raise even though imho think she deserves way more than what she's getting.
    Another thing is that I wasn't very good at the job at the beginning, I made a ton of mistakes, but me being there despite the mistakes was more valuable than me not being there at all. Especially when I DID end up getting better at the job, partly thanks to being more motivated thanks to the pay raise, even if for a little while. I was too valuable to not appease.
