How The Umbrella Academy Uses Fun to Hide its Flaws | The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Review

  • The Umbrella Academy is a fun show.
    The Umbrella Academy is centered on a dysfunctional family of estranged super heroes, forced to band together to save the world from the apocalypse. The setting and powers add for a colorful backdrop but the true star of the show are the characters and the ever shifting family dynamic. Season 3 of the Umbrella Academy builds on the show's legacy and uses fun as a means of dispelling any issues that crop up. It is by no means a perfect show, but I have such a good time with it that I find myself overlooking its flaws, just happy to be along for the ride.

    The most unfortunate part of Alison’s character is that her relationship with Ray could’ve perfectly resolved all of her past trauma and issues. When she landed back in the 60’s (or whenever it was I can’t remember), she couldn’t talk and therefore couldn’t use her power to influence anybody. She was trapped in a time period where she was systemically oppressed and kept in a sub-human state, no superpowers to magically make everyone cater to her will and had to actually work and fight to get to the position she was in at that time. She also had to work really hard to get to this stage of her relationship with Ray too, not being able to force other people to love her and having to genuinely reach out and connect with others in order to build those bonds and breach those connections. Everything that Alison achieved in that season was a huge deal that showed what she was capable of doing as a person without using her powers, but having all of that ripped away from her again left a void in her heart that could easily be refilled by using her powers to get whatever she wants without having to take the time and effort to get it herself.

    Okay, looking at the comments I may be in the minority, but Diego caring for and loving Stanley as his own son was one of the most important character developing moments for Diego. He went from a “lone wolf” type, willing to die at any moment and who also cared about his family to a man who was solely focused on protecting the people he loved. Other than Klaus (and maybe Lila) he had the best emotional arc

    Fun fact: Reginald needed a minimum of 7 superpowered individuals to power the machine, and the opening narrative states "Sir Reginald Hargreeves set out to adopt as many children as he can", meaning that he wouldn't mind getting an eighth or ninth child if it means sacrificing just 7. Imagine if he only succeeded in adopting 6 or less children.

    Personally, I liked what they did with Ben. I think their goal was to slowly reveal that he wasn't all that different from their Ben. He is different in some ways, but you have to remember that Umbrella Ben died so young and did most of his growing up as a spirit only able to interact with Klaus. I think his death really humbled him and being tied to Klaus specifically made him more responsible since he had no choice but to be witness to Klaus at his worst. He also is forced to be objective. He can't gain power or prestige as a spirit, so he lacks the motivations that new Ben is completely fixated on.

It was so bad I wondered if they were purposely developing her to be a possible villain or something. Like there no growth in her character or anything, she's so incredibly unlikable, which is not so bad since all shows need villains, but there's no creativity in the writing of her character.
    also since they can share powers ,I wonder will she be the link in giving powers back to Vicktor or the others.

    I may be in the minority but I really dislike seasons 2 & 3. I think season 2 was decent but foreshadowed the issues in season 3; the more grounded, serious topics would be overshadowed by the whacky funny moments.
    Season 3 really didnt give enough time to some of the more darker storylines. For example, The Umbrellas vs. The Sparrows had great potential of confronting the differences between the success and failures of the different teams, especially since Ben was still alive. I feel like his death was not explored enough via the other characters; Luther, Diego, Allison, and Four had not seen their brother for a very long time, and in the case of the first three, he had been dead to them because of their failings as a team and family. But there is barely any emotional moments between them, until the last few episodes, and even then, Ben's interactions with the brellies are played for comedy more than emotional turmoil.
    And the relationships between characters, as well as their relationships with the supporting characters, was either shallow or very rushed. It felt like the showrunners needed the plot to progress as quickly as possible, and so the characters would act in almost unbelievable ways just to make it happen.
    The Umbrella's have gone through 2 seasons of character development with each other, learning how to be closer as a family and team. And suddenly, with almost no effort on the other characters parts, they are back to their petty squabbles from season 1. I would have been fine with them regressing if it was done as a ploy by other characters, or if it was a test to their previous arcs, but its not. Most of it is for plot convenience or for laughs. Its frustrating.
    And then there's the characters individual arcs. Allison is definitely the most egregious, with her becoming incredibly volatile at the drop of a hat, with no emotional build-up. Don't even get me started on her and Luther. Also, her power is... So fucking underutilised. I feel like the writers realised she couldve ended the season in five minutes so they had her character turn hostile and petty. But I digress. Allison in season 1 showed remorse for what she did to Victor, even though Vic slit her throat (accidentally). Allison in season 2 wanted to be apart of something more honourable and greater than her previous life as an Umbrella Hero (which I believe was done both for selfish and selfless reasons but I wont rant about here). Allison in season 3 *checks notes* deliberately provoked the Sparrows despite knowing they were dangerous, sa'd Luther, was incredibly hostile to Victor and killed his situationships lovechild out of misplaced revenge, fought tooth and nail against her siblings, and sided with her abusive dad to end the world. Like... What the fuck is this progression???
    Ben's loss of leadership wouldve been really cool to see. Wouldve given a great arc to how Ben views his family as competition whereas the Umbrellas (with the exception of Klaus) had remembered him as their brother. Just... ugh. Missed potential at its finest.
    Viktors transition was the fucking best. My little queer heart exploded with happiness.
    Luther and Sloane was rushed imo, way to quickly developed I felt nothing for it. Diego needed more. Four was... Actually, he was okay. Klaus needed his immortality to be taken more seriously. The pain of dying and resurecting is an amazing concept, and they played it for laughs. I miss the days of season 1 and 2 where his powers felt grounded and his turbulent relationship with them felt genuine.
    Sparrows were boring, needed way more time and development.
    Ill end my rant here because I can go on and on about how season 3 was not very good (again, my opinion) but this is already very long.

      I get some people really enjoy Umbrella Academy for the comedy, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. My issue comes from when the other enjoyable aspects of the show - like the serious darker narratives and nuanced character arcs - are lost just so the humour and wackiness can be elevated.

    I love how you included so much information about the show. I definitely agree with the points you made in this video and I wish we could've learned more about the Sparrows Academy's past and powers because it felt like they were used as more of a distraction from the Kugelblitz than anything. I still enjoyed seeing the relationship between them and the Umbrella and their appearance was an awesome twist at the end of season 2. I've never seen a film pull off so many twists and turns and I feel like they did a great job at adding in a lot of wacky moments. Another thing I love about the Umbrella Academy is how no matter the amount of trauma and bad news that's added into the show, there's always enough humour and heartfelt moments that make it so much more enjoyable! This is literally my favorite show of all time. It's fun, quirky, and has a great story. I've heard a lot of people say season 3 wasn't good, but that's crazy talk to me. It's just a complicated story. and its linear, compared to the other seasons. Each character didn't really have their own major sub-plot like before, but I don't mind that. More time to focus on the main story. I honestly thought it was funny how complicated the plot can be. I remembered two times me and my brother actually laughed at what a mind fuck some of it was. That being when it was revealed five founded the commission and the grandfather paradox scene. Whenever you're watching a show about time travel, you gotta suspend your disbelief. I'm already watching a show that has characters with crazy super powers, so I've suspended my disbelief already. Sure, there are a few plot holes here and there, but nothing major and story breaking. Also, I love the relationship he had with Klaus. No one can tell me that they didn’t sleep together at the wedding. It also raises questions about Ben and Klaus’ relationship in the original timeline.

    It’s kind of perfect for this show that half of the characters plot lines are about forgiving and reconnecting with their father so they can move on and become more mature adults (Diego, Luther and Klaus) and it’s all for nothing as Reggie betrays or murders all of his kids proving they were right to begin with for hold that grudge

Because she’s been the worst but like with always sunny, none of the characters come off as amazing people),showing a character can have a layer or two of shit (,. Sometimes being the worst at times gives the plot more interest. Glad she didn’t go true with the r word/.

    Also, I have a question:
    If Klaus couldn't stop David from enrolling in the army, therefore he died, why couldn't he summon his spirit?
    I meaan, it makes sense that doesn't happen in season 3, since Klaus formed a bond with the David from the first timeline not the second... BUT
    I don't get it why he didn't do it in season 1, when he was still in the first timeline.

    feeling cognitively dissonant with this review, I think a lot of people may be letting their personal relatability to Allison cloud the comic book creator and show writers' intention for the character. it's not an objectively flawed decision to make a good character bad from a mental break; in fact I'd go so far to say that she's one of the most believable antagonists on the show. we saw allison at her peak and greatest in season 1, but since then *everything* she's worked for from before the show when she was a child to all the way through seasons 1-3 was ripped away from her. This *doesn't* justify her actions in any sense, but we've personally watched her slowly reach her breaking point over the course of the show. This to me, is *good* writing, and a *good* character, even if her character is antagonistic and morally horrific.

  • @Red-pk8lh
    @Red-pk8lh Před 9 dny

    Its funny how you consider each character with such depth and acknowledge their flaws and weaknesses in light of their complexity until we get to Allison. Then, you just start slagging her off.
    I agree the switch from little miss sunshine in season 2 to the cynical character she becomes in season 3 isnt brilliantly executed, but who she is in season 3 does not make her a terrible person, i'd argue. She is doing bad things because of her greif and loss, and she undeniably lost more than her siblings throughout the series- i mean, her CHILD, for crying out loud- and none of them appear to show any sympathy. We witness the power going to her head as a result of her loss of control over her life, after losing Ray and Claire, and never is this portrayed as a good thing. Broken people can do terrible things. What she did to Luther was horrific, but i dont believe it consigns her to being the 2 dimensional "baddie" of the season. He deserves an apology and she needs to regain his trust.
    You skip over the fact that she does not in fact make a deal with Reggie just because of her own selfish and evil reasons- she makes him promise no harm would come to her siblinhs, and when she sees he is hurting them, she tries to stop him. This reminds us that she is good at heart, but was blinded by her greif in that moment of making the deal.
    Well done on the rest of the video, it was very perceptive- i just wish you would have extended some of that to Allisoms character. I find people can be quick to label female, black characters as evil or annoying. I doubt this was concious of you and i understand your arguments entirely, you still have the right to your opinions and no personal beef for holding them, i was just offering another perspective.

    Alison's character assassination is probably the worst part of the show so far, and the main reason I won't be watching season 4. It's just lazy, lazy writing. Also the other ridiculous thing about the Diego/Stanley plotline is that Diego and Lila are both brown people??? There's no way an ethnic person is going to look at that pale child and not be completely suspicious. I rolled my eyes and knew that kid wasn't going to be his the second he entered the scene.
    Great video btw! I always appreciate people who are able to look critically at the shows they love and I feel like I was taking crazy pills when I saw how many people were loving on this season uncritically. Hope you get many more views and subs

    • @imsomething4432
      @imsomething4432 Před 4 měsíci +5

      I think it's like this, that version of Pogo and the old timeline is always the same and love the kids and the reg. As you can see at season 1, Pogo always try to protect them with the secrets, give them reassurance that their dad give them purpose. Another thing he did was whenever they were fighting, he stopped it or the last episode he was sorry for Vanya. The difference here is Regg went soft because he found a new love, Grace. This is probably why he changed and actually for his kids and killed himself. But the problem is, during Diego's obsession with protecting JFK, he made Grace suspicious of Reg and made her left him instead of loving him. This cause Reg to get to his original plan to revives his wife instead of moving on
