Stupid question prolly, but do you not have to use guards on the blade?

No it’s much easier to use the size blade you want for the job than to use attachable combs or guards. For face feet and tail that can be a 40-10 blade, for body often a 3, 5, or 7 (great for summer and pet cuts)
