This is the best aging in place video that I have seen, so far ! My husband and I are only in our 60's. We are planning on moving, however, and I think it would be wise to be pro-active and get these features in place for our new home.
Thanks, this house as designed is particularly great for what I call first phase of retirement BUT the planning supports modifications down the road. There are so many ranches on the same block that still have narrow doors and hallways as an example.
Absolutely wonderful and thoughtful design(s)! LOVE the bathroom design especially with grab bar towel rack combo and toilet paper holder along with the shower hardware. You thought of most every possibility! I wish I had that home. The only not so good thing is the microwave. I know it is so popular with everyone to have it above the stove but it is impractical and even dangerous for disabled/short persons. Stoves should be models that have knobs on the front so as not to have to lean over burners. The stove model you have is good too..
Love. If I could I would build a community of homes like this for aging. I have incorporated a lot of these ideas in my home already.

The microwave over the range is problematic. I know it's kinda traditional, but something at counter level would be safer and more useable.
Wonderful design and insightful innovations! Would be great for me but alas I am living in solitary confinement since my son moved his girlfriend in.

What Type of Mattresses
are Used on the Bed ?
Why not just put drawers in the kitchen cabinet, instead of having to open the doors and pull out the shelf?
You could, however this is a wide cabinet for deep pull outs. They hold more weight.
What about the areas in rooms where you might need oxygen, or set up for a nurse or Dr to plug in IV or other medical machines? And, do you come to Bostin area? Also, Security alarms, vidro cametas. People wont be safe from those who will try to take advantage, sadly. Help Alert systems? Wish builders would build these types of homes across America. Ranch style or one level living with plenty of storage, and assistive devices built in. Microwaves should not be over the stove. Lots of folks too short to reach. Stove I like, but worry that you could set something on fire, or burn yourself, should the flat top not be cooled fast enough or there is an element issue. Isnt there something better? Hand railings to grab in hallways?
Yes, could be burned trying to get something down from microwave.
The induction cooktop doesn't have elements. It uses magnetism. So it's much less likely you'll get burned or cause a fire.
Think there is a need for shade on the porch
No way do I want that much window in my door! Very unsafe.
What carpet tile do you recommend? We are redoing our parents home and are torn between wood and carpet or both like you have here!
Leila - I am so sorry I missed your post from a year ago. But I thought there might be others looking for an answer to the same question. A few manufacturers that make great carpet tile are Interface Flooring, Flor (the residential line of Interface), Mannington Commercial and Shaw "Floorigami" are a few.
The only thing I see that is missing is some place to eat. Some great ideas to make it easier from people to age in place.
