The only time Lelouch ever tells a joke and it causes an attempted genocide.
Lmfao
attempted? lol
and he never tells a joke ever again
Thats in season 1
It was s boast with hyperbole, not a joke:
As messy as Season 2 was, the ending cemented Code Geass as a classic.
Yup.
Yup indeed
I was deciding on what to give s2 but after I watched the ending, it was a 10/10 for me
I remember Nux talking about how brilliant the ending was. I think he said something about its brilliance being in its ambiguity regarding Lelouch's ideology.
Do you guys share the same thoughts?
@@thabokgwele5268 Yeah I agree. The ending works on so many levels. It ties all the themes and plot points in such a profound yet elegant way
"Season 2 was like a car crash that somehow perfectly parallel parked"
This might be one of the best sentences I've heard so far, and it's such an apt way to describe it ^^
reminds me of the scene from incredibles
Couldn't describe R2 any better.
And I loved it for it. 10/10
My issue with R2 was how confusing or poorly explained the Ragnarok Connection was. That shit had me feeling really lost just as the story was at its climax and reaching the conclusion.
Also, why is it called "R2" ?
@@thabokgwele5268 yeah that is one of the points I agree with you, like I don't remember exactly what or how it was explained, I just remember me thinking "this kinda doesn't make any sense, does it?"
And I guess it's called R2 because it's a play with the name? Lelouch of the Rebellion, R2=Rebellion 2? or sth like that maybe ^^

@@NeverLadias thanks bro
@@tablekun5014 we're all about spitting facts here
The Euphie twist was definitely a "oh shit we painted ourselves into a corner" situation, but at least they foreshadowed it in earlier episodes. I'm like 99% sure CC cautions Lelouch that overusing the Geass could result it in permanently staying there.
Yeah I think I remember her warning him about that.
Okay yeah but it’s also pretty bullshit that it randomly activated RIGHT when Lelouch was saying “you know, if Icommanded you to massacre the Japanese you would do it”.
There was no reason for him to specifically say that other than to continue the plot.
@@Doctor4077 I think you're both correct and incorrect here. Like, absolutely it comes across as a plot contrivance hail mary. But this is Euphie, arguably the most innocent person in this entire series who is striving for peace, companionship, and reuniting with the one she thought of as her childhood best friend/brother. Lelouch saying "lol imagine if I ordered you to kill all the Japanese, crazy right" is obviously insane, but he was also making a point (indirectly) about his powers. The idea of wanton murder is so against Euphie's core values that it can work as a joking over-exaggeration of what he could make her do: betray herself so thoroughly and completely that nothing is left. And, in an instance of incredibly cruel irony, that's exactly what happens.
Exactly, she knew the dangers of geass but Lelouch couldn’t stop
@@Doctor4077 the “joke” is a hyperbole, it’s saying the complete opposite to something, like Euphy who is a kind hearted person killing people

Code geass is and has always been my all time favorite anime. But yes season two is perfectly described by garnt here. “A car crash that somehow parallel parked” is too perfect. I don’t care how sloppy and forced the euphemia massacre was or how messy season 2 was as a whole. No anime has brought me as much joy while watching as that show. No matter how open minded I go in. I realized years later that the show colored my taste and I look for what I enjoyed there in all other shows subconsciously.
I respect the honesty 🙃
Well said. It’s my favorite anime I actually first watched it as an adult and watched it another time since then and I can still stick by giving both seasons a 10/10. I can see Garnt’s point about Euphemia, however they foreshadow it and hint at it a lot before it happens, C.C keeps warning Lelouch that he won’t be able to control Geass thus leading to the Euphemia moment
And there is Mao too
> A lot
Lelouch first suffers trouble with his Geass earlier in that episode. Sure, we have Mao to foreshadow the concept, but the actual event of Lelouch losing control happened in one episode, so it comes as the writers suddenly implementing it after ignoring it for several episodes, rather than being a plot point with well-paced development.
And also the part where he gives her the worst possible example.
@@AusSP No you are totally wrong. Don't forget that Lelouch made a contract with CC, a contract that at the time we didn't know. The change in faith and destiny are part o that world from a philosophical standpoint. The contract was that Lelouch had to kill CC. Geass just assured that Lelouche would take that path.
and that makes it more stupid.. why would lelouch says that if he was already warned by CC..
@@hommofroggy5727 None of that makes any sense. The Geass universe doesn't have any fate forcing events. And Lelouch never kills C.C., so that's double bullshit. Triple, actually. It can't be forcing Lelouch to kill C.C. if Lelouch never kills C.C., and C.C. made the same contract in the past, which also never happened.
The cat chasing episode was used largely to ingratiate Suzaku into the student body. This needed to be given a lot of attention and runtime because he was being bullied before this event. Without such a spectacle and surge in popularity, it'd be hard to accept that the bullying and general unease of the students suddenly stopped and we'd have to continue that plot thread.
exactly, like another thing, there is such thing as comic relief. That was the point of the school episodes, there were breathers from the tense rebellion
they don't get that. "TRASH TASTE". they already watch hundred or thousand of anime but still cannot get the character development episode. i wonder what is 10/10 for them.
not only that but also, there's the human side of lelouch not just the fighter and revolutionary
they seem to forget that even if how much lelouch wanted rebellion, he still is a healthy young college man
That's why the cat scene was stupid because that has something to do with the plot and it would been better if they just make it a filler ep not saying the whole thing is bad ok even though that was kinda stupid i still enjoyed that scene.....
I saw the title in a notification . I’m here to throw hands.

I always thought the whole Euphemia thing was a sign that his Geass power was becoming uncontrollable, but then again, we never see him accidentally Geass someone for the rest of the series.
Simple reason(spoiler): well first of all he knew that his geass was permanently active now so he kept wearing his mask as shit hit the fan at that point in the story. Than we saw that Charles used his geass to make lelouch forget everything and we know that geass work on a brain level as it could even keep nunully from seeing and in the end he got contact lenses from C.C. at the beginning of season 2
Like the other dude says, it’s cause he wore a mask and also started wearing contacts
I think the main reason that the moment is dumb is cause he gave her the worst possible example like the video says. “Wouldn’t it be funny if I told you to kill the Japanese?” 😂 he could have said anything else. Still I love this show

Like the whole euphy situation where people forgot that lelouch lost control of geass before he ordered euphy to do anything so people assume it was super convenient when it wasn't. I rewatched it recently and everyone's arguments have a key factor missing from memory
Garnt was actually right
@@Unknownz000 Fanboi
@@Unknownz000 yeah it made sense but it's still cheap writing it just looks like the writers ran out of ideas like Lelouch just joked about killing the Japanese and Euphoria actually killed the Japanese there nothing smart about this scene. Pardon for my shit english.
For the Euphemia scene, it's like people forget about the whole foreshadowing from the Mao arc, you know, the guy who literally goes crazy from using his geass too much, and the warnings C.C. gives Lelouch about losing control of his geass.. and then get a surprise Pikachu face when Lelouch loses control of it leading to that moment.
As for what Lelouch says, it makes complete sense with his character's writing, Lelouch is a very prideful egotistical genius, and we know this by that point - As a sore loser to Euphemia, he makes sure that she knows that he could win if he wanted to at any time by just telling her to "kill all the Japanese" while his geass is active.. which he does whilst losing control.. and the tragedy begins.
what didnt make sense was that the geass malfunctioned in that exact moment just because they wanted to drag the story longer, that my friend is called an asspull.
@@christopherutit8746 1. Actually the geass malfunctioned way before he told Euphemia to massacre the Japanese. There is a moment while Lelouch and Euphemia were talking where Lelouch had fallen to his knees in pain covering his eye. Simultaneously, C.C. had also fallen down in pain because she is part of the geass. She mutters out "No...He has reached that point?!" Implying that Lelouch had lost control of his geass. While Lelouch was able to regain control for the time being, we all knew what was about to come later.
2. "they wanted to drag the story longer". Lelouch's entire goal was to overthrow his father, the king of Britannia, out of revenge for not saving his mother. He purposely started a revolt in Japan not because he wanted to get rid of Britannia's invasion on Japan, but because he wanted to overthrow the king. He merely used the Japanese as tools. Euphemia would make it so that Lelouch and Japan would no longer have a reason to keep rebelling, thus he would lose. If the story had Lelouch accept the peace treaty, I would be questioning why I stuck around 22 episodes rooting for Lelouch.
@@realwatermelon6486 still, even if it happened before, why did it happen again at that exact moment? plus who lets royalty be alone in the same room with a terrorist with a fucking gun? they probably just thought code geass was too popular so they wanted another season but they wrote themselves into a corner. I get that you like code geass, hell i like it as well but its just too flawed to be called a masterpiece in my opinion.
@@christopherutit8746 "why did it happen again at that exact moment?" Idk. Why did Juliet have to wake up right after Romeo killed himself? I can see why you would be angry about the geass activation timing because it just seems too convenient and out of place. However, Code Geass was a story that prided itself on implausibility, so Euphemia's massacre is not any different. In season 1, they had a whole episode dedicated to a cat running around with Lelouch's mask. Though it is a "wtf" moment, it does show you how far down the rabbit hole of implausibility this anime will go. And much similar to how Shakespeare talks about fate in Romeo and Juliet, Code Geass often talks about miracles. The implausible story + the amount of foreshadowing that occurred made it seem to me that Euphemia's massacre was something set in stone rather than something done on a whim to keep the story going. However, I do understand why the geass activation just seems too convenient.
"plus who lets royalty be alone in the same room with a terrorist with a fucking gun?"
1. CONCEALED gun
2. Euphemia herself also asked to be alone with Lelouch or Zero, despite protests from Suzaku. Reasons being that Euphemia and Lelouch are childhood friends and obviously have great trust in each other.
"its just too flawed to be called a masterpiece in my opinion."
I agree, story is flawed in some points. In season 2, I hated how Lelouch's character never seemed to change, especially after Euphemia's death. Like, bro, you just killed your childhood friend. I also never understood what was going on with Charles and Marianne in C.C.'s world and what they were trying to do, all I remember is seeing a bunch of flashing images about....something. Also the episodes where the anime pretended to be a comedy, slice-of-life highschool anime, why? Code Geass is definitely far from a masterpiece.
@@realwatermelon6486 on the concealed gun thing dont the guards check what lelouch has or sumn? other than that though, your analysis is surprisingly spot on
I would say that season 2 at times was not as well crafted as season 1 but it still delivers and the ending was what made it a masterpiece

Doesn't make it less convenient and implausible
@@cunny_is_my_kryptonite "convenient" for who? foreshadowing and changing character relationships requires a lot of extra work on the part of writers. the only people the change is "convient" for are a few fictional Britannians.
@@rumfordcConvenient for the show, duh.
@@laststrike4411 shows aren't alive, they don't feel convenience. i think what you're _trying_ to say is that its convenient for the _staff_ of the show, which I already explained is false.
The episode dedicated to the cat literally shows that anyone and anything can expose Lelouch as Zero. It makes him realise that he can be caught by anyone or anything in the most dumbest of ways, it's meant to be comedic.. It's also so that Suzaku and Lelouch's friendship can be known to the rest of the school so not everyone is viewing the Japanese as sub-humans.
Lelouch is confident, he brags, he doesn't care nor did he expect it. He was bragging to Euphie about his new power that could allow him to do anything, and he said the one thing that he could order her to do that was against her own morals without realising his geass had went out of control, ignoring what C.C warned him of.
Season 2 was pretty good.. Idk wym, Schneizel proved to be a really worthy enemy, and showed that he could break Zero down quickly and how Lelouch fights off Charles and claims himself as the new emperor is good. Rolo proved to be a good character, misunderstood, not loved, not wanted.. He'd do anything to stay close to Lelouch
I don't understand how they didn't like the whole of season 2 but yet consider finale the best ending ever, because when you think about it, everything that happened in season 2 that was planned by lelouch was what build up to the finale. The finale was so good it was supposed to make you appreciate everything that happened in the season before hand and make you realise why lelouch took those actions. The finale filled up all the holes that we all had in season 2 as everything that happened was connected from the very start all the way to the finale.

The thing about the Euphemia twist is that it’s tragic has lelouch didn’t intend to use his geass on her. It was foreshadowed that lelouch wouldn’t be able to control his Geass the more powerful it got.
or maybe this is lelouch's true intent in his heart.

Are there anymore resources after code geass 2 and the movie?
His point on Euphemia, I noticed that during Season 2 when Season 2 had all sorts of random nonsense plot twists "just to keep the show going" that it made reevaluate how the show got to where it was.
Code Geass is a good show but it has MANY huge flaws in it. Season 2 is definitely a mess.
In Code Geass' defense, the fact that Geass can grow beyond their users' control was already hinted at with Mao, so it's not like the malfunction with Euphemia came out of nowhere.
Foreshadowed but poor executioned
0:38 that cat episode in season 1 was great
i think euphemia massacre twist is what serves as a pre climatic war trigger, its like the situation is gone out of controll and nothing can be done, you cannot turn back from this point leading to the war and ending of season 1, it was important for the plot but mind i also feel its heartbreaking and really tragic.
Code Geass and its ending is just so memorable that it fcking reminds me of my young passion for anime when I was 9
Season 2 was a mess for the most part but I found nothing wrong with lelouch accidentally ordering Euphemia to massacre everyone. They foreshadowed it happening and lelouch is definitely arrogant enough to ignore CCs warnings. Not to mention the statement “I could order you to kill the Japanese right now” or whatever he said, was also very in character.
I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I feel like the ending of R2 is overrated. It felt pretty contrived.
"I don't want to make a world of lies" also lelouch:creates a new world based on a lie 😂
Sophie asks Lelouch if he thought she would seriously shoot him just because he was trying to intimidate her.
Lelouch being a guy who tries to always makes his genius the forefront in front of people just tried to explain to Eupie the power of his Geass, without actually explaining it.
Decides that scene was foreshadowed.
Code Geass is my favorite anime but I watched it back when I first started watching anime about 5 years ago. It seems that each year I tell my friends more and more that it is my favorite anime. It'll hold up, trust. People tend to blow stuff out of proportion when talking about the negatives with code geass. While there are objectively some flaws in the show with regards to plot convenience and some cop out writing, the enjoyment and thrill you get from experiencing that crazy ride is still the same as when you first watch it. Even the ending hits almost as hard as the first watch since you spend 49 episodes with lelouch and everyone else before getting there again.

Lelouch's geass going rogue at that point is definitely convenient but what he said isn't that weird.
It's perfectly normal to make a completely absurd statement to prove to someone about something. "I can even make you do "
And as for the timing, I always assumed with V.V. giving a sly smile at the island when Lelouch's geass activated that he somehow made it reach its limit way sooner than normal. Even C.C. was surprised that Lelouch's geass was already at the limit even though she was with him all the time and more or less knew how much he was using it.
Tbf Code Geass encapsulates exactly why I think rating by number is an altogether stupid concept. Who cares if Code Geass has a few flaws. That's the product of ambition and a tight production schedule. What they managed to create by the end was a masterpiece regardless. Why watch a "perfect" 10/10 show if it just isn't as interesting, unique or enjoyable as Code Geass. The characters and arcs it nails, are phenomenal and as they said themselves, it is EASILY the best ending in anime history. The only one close to it is Devilman Crybaby or maybe Monster but still far away from the perfection of Code Geass by its end. Thematically everything comes to a close that most writers wish they could construct, so who cares about the few flaws along the way???
U spitting
Bruh a perfect 10/10 show would obviously be more interesting than code geas if code geass is not 10/10. Also I agree , the cat episode was unnecessary but I didn't care much and wouldn't call it a flaw , it was just a filler episode. I personally thought code geass was alright but I can see why people like it and call it a masterpiece
@@mimijeet9921 It's the characterization mostly. All the major characters are incredibly sympathetic, even at their most diabolical, so at a certain point you yourself start questioning who really is noble or just and who is the villain, you end up in the mind of Lelouch and Schneizel where morality has been cast aside and all that is left is the chessboard. It's both seductive and traumatizing, and the ending is a perfect crystallization of this conflict. That's how I see it anyways, plenty of people take away different things from art, everyone will have a different answer.
@@mimijeet9921 I guess so but my main example for this is FMB. That show is absolutely a perfect series. Literally nothing wrong with it. I'd rate it a couple of points lower than Code Geass personally because I just found it somewhat uninspired and its themes not really being that exciting or relevant. But man that cat episode and the two festival episodes really fucked the show
@@dfkfgjfg I don't get it , what's wrong with a few filler episodes here and there. Honestly I didn't have a problem with tha cat episode , you don't like slice of life anime I guess? Also fmab definitely had a few boring episodes but the endgame is fucking beautiful.
I mean it wasn’t a hot mess at all, it just seemed like that until the last episode which brought everything together. It didn’t make sense how suzaku followed lelouchs ideology without much explanation, but the ending tied everything together.
suzaku can work with lelouch pretty early on.
Yet it wasn't until lelouch apologized for euphie's death and let suzaku stepped on him(😏),
that he managed to switch side.
lmao the spoiler timestamp is different than the full episode. Great work.
A lot of Code Geass I experienced was alongside Gundam 00, and man what I can describe Code Geass is something that likened to a chess game between Lelouch and a nation.
I personally enjoys both seasons but when I finished Season 2 I loved the ending but in my opinion The Chinese Federation arc was extremely slow but it's still my number 1 anime I love it❤🔥
These titles are gonna get the "Me read title only" group so offended lmao.
Well then maybe the title shouldn't be clickbait
@@vishalasthana8998 clickbait = more views
the worst thing about the whole Euphemia thing is that is happened about the same time that Gurren Lagann was airing and you know who died so if you were into both shows you were just devastated
Seeing the shirts you wear and most of the figures at the background explains why you simply understand the story
"Code Geass season 2 is a HOT MESS"
Me intellectually : oh, you mean Sunrise second season curse? Ok fine
But their Gundam series with season 2 was dope
in fairness to the euphemia moment, they actually spent quite a lot of time setting that up. Was it an incredibly convenient moment for Lelouche to finally lose control? Yes, absolutely, but the entire Mao arc was to set that up, and we also see hints of it happening to lelouche several times before that, and it's also woven in intimately with CC's backstory. If you just watch that one moment out of context, it is completely absurd, but within the context of the entire show, it's at least believable for what the universe had set up.
Garnt forgot that code geass is a mecha and supernatural anime.
2:00 personally I believe that the fact that lelouch is so prideful (and honest enough to euphy) that he would say that in the spur of the moment because that's his thought
Ok, hold up. The cat episode resolved some of the racism with Suzaku. There was very much a reason with having that episode there.
God I don’t wanna rant about this show but I love it too muc
Alright so when Lelouch told the joke: it weakened his hopes of solving the 11 problem with no bloodshed when he realized he can’t backstab his dad if he joined Euphy(RIP) but after when Lelouch told the joke he realized I can’t be a vigilante who can solve this peacefully, oath of the Geass basically forced him to not betray his own oath. The scene was crucial to Lelouch’s diversity with his mind. He already killed so many people to the point where he can never look back, the geass forced him to not look back
Ok not this is me being biased but I love Rolo
I get why Garnt disliked the Euphemia-thing, because it was just the most unfortunate coincidence possible, but that's exactly how tragedies have worked since ancient greece. Just look at Oedipus, for example. Same thing - The most unlucky greek hero, who unknowingly kills his father and marrys his mother. Of course, in the modern Storytelling-Landscape, using randomness is considered weak writing, but it has been an effective tool for most of humanitys literary history.
Oedipus actually works so much better as we know what happens before the play starts
I had to work the morning I watched Episode 22, the classic Euphemia scene, and was uncomfortable and uneasy the entire rest of the day. What's incredible to me about it, was that it wasn't a random plot twist or BS that the writers pulled out of their ass, it was referenced and foreshadowed by C.C. and Mao's character arc. Will never forget it, on par with the Eclipse for sure.
I'm glad someone else shares my vitriol about that Euphemia scene.
I mean code geass is my favourite anime of all time and I know there’s a lot of plot holes and that r2 isn’t as good but I still fucking love this show
Could someone elaborate on "Season 2 is a hot mess" thing? I finished it yesterday and maybe I'm blinded by the ending so I could forgive everything leads up to it
Same
Remember back and see if S2 was as good as S1. You will get your answer. Don't get blinded by the ending
for me it was just wondering what the fuck they were doing for 20 episodes. The knights of the round just seemed like a monumental waste of time. As they mentioned, it felt like some of the plot twists were so forced to just keep the plot going.
@@JaretVincent Guess I'm one of those who were blinded by the ending..
May I ask for examples, please? (I'm 100% serious and genuinely curious, others got my tone confused for being defensive.)
don't expect an explanation. the only people who call it a mess are the ones who lost track and are too embarrassed to admit it. they'll always use a joke or broad dismissal like "train wreck", "car crash", "mess" because they don't actually remember any of the details. if they tried to bring up any details, they'd instantly get an explanation and be proven wrong.
I have one thing to say, Rolo is the homie, like the Duke in resident evil 8, I love him. Our bestie T^T
I dont really care what score it is but it got me hook till the end and thats way more important
just finished season 2 and holy shit. I’m so grateful that i didn’t get the ending spoiled. I had really high expectations and it still blew me away 😭😭
Don't call it a mess if you just weren't able to understand it.
Redditor take:
breaking bad had that one episode where they were trying to kill a fly
There is also an old Batman comic were during the entire issue Alfred, together with the third Robin Tim Drake, is chasing a Fox who somehow got into the bat-cave.
Mind you Alfred was wielding a shotgun during this escapade and he activly used it.
Lmao his first critique was actually foreshadowed earlier in the season with an entire episode.
Code Geass isn't perfect , it has some flaws, but it has one of the best concepts, ending, and the theme which is also the ideals/philosophical thoughts are amazing. I apprecieate a main character dying with a great purpose that not everyone knows his greatness as he was viewed in everyone's eyes as the ultimate villain. but with those greatness comes with also some failure in his plots which makes this show and Lelouch Humane. in addition to this, the POV isn't just focus on Lelouch and showing his path as good, but also shows other's POV along with their Ideal.
Code Geass is one of my favorite things in the world but it's a messy masterpiece, between the Persona 5 levels of "I guess we're killing FUCKING GOD FOR NO REASON WHY IS HE EVEN HERE" and the characters that are given a ton of screentime but have no narrative importance, it's hard not to cringe until you get to another good part and forget all about its flaws again. Tbf it's kind of a miracle Code Geass exists in the first place with the production hell it went through, especially leading up to season 2, come yet that it's as good as it is.
OMG. Thank you. I though I was the only one who didn't like how Persona 5 ended. Where the story was so tight before with the palaces and fighting the corruption of society, the ending took a nosedive into pseudo intellectual nonsense, just elevating stakes cuz they felt like it.
This is making me want to rewatch code geass as I remember it as a great show. I wonder if my opinion would change now.
Why didn't CC simply relay to Lelouch how Marianne died? Then Lelouch doesn't need to bother waging war on everybody.
I thought I was the only one who only thinks Code Geass isn't a masterpiece that everyone says it is.
the slaughter near the end of season 1 was hilarous
After rewatching it, I kinda wish they have dive in more on Geass origin & history.
I feel like their saying whole princess massacre was stupid in the same sense that you miss your flight cause you forgot your passport when you go to the airport. Yea both are dumb consequences from really avoidable things but I don’t think it takes away from the plot. Because thats just how life goes and shit happens sometimes.
It's not even that bad. I wouldn't call it a "hot mess". People just don't like to think about things, and some things will happen seemingly out of coincidence.
The more you think about code geass the more everything falls apart.
@@icecp6532 I don't listen to these people anymore, anyway. Not after they said that Ghibli movies aren't anime and are "overrated". So now I don't think any of their opinions are valid.
@@BigFry9591 I mean they’re clearly biased against ghibli because Miyazaki is a complete asshole. They’ve talked about this on the podcast, but the movies are ruined for them when they think about the people that made them.

Can somone explain to me why the ending was perfect? I just don't see it that way
