An in depth look at the differences between the XCF-W ‘dirt bike’ and the EXC-F street legal bike.
We’re not as impressed with its promises as we thought we’d be.

Great info helping us to understand the difference between the 2 bikes!
one of my fav dirt bike channel!
Think I'll be keeping my 2014. Great informative video! Thanks!
Nice info. I bought the 19 exc and turned it into more of a Dirtbike. Works for me.
Awesome video Mike! Can't wait for your break down of the 2024.... very keen to get one up here in Vancouver
Keep information coming Tks
Best review of the '20 model on CZcams right now. Keep it coming. Buddy of mine had white powder in his tank (demoulding powder?) that completely plugged his fuel filter. Keep an eye out for that.
Drugs are Bad M Kay
@@johnfryman4428 coke and gas. Its the new deal
Thanks for the info 👍
Great video. Thanks
On my '19 FE450, the vacuum hose was too close to the exhaust and had a hole burned in it. The solenoid was constantly pulling vapors, so much so that fuel was actually pouring from the outlet hose connected to the front of the frame. Did not have any idea what was causing that until I did the emissions delete. Crazy stuff
Nice detailed review but I think if you count the teeth on that front sprocket you'll find it's a 14 tooth. I specifically remember counting the teeth on the 2020 500excf model and it was 14:48. The previous generation 17-19 models came 14:45. The first generation 12-16 came 15:45. With the continental street oriented tires, which are quiet, the need for ultra high gearing to pass the drive by test was eliminated. And you're right that most people would be hard pressed to need anymore power than stock. Especially for what these bikes, both excf and xcfw, are designed for. They are not desert race bikes. Single and two track trails is what they were designated for. If you're looking for an off road race bike you want the xc-f.
Awesome overview and very detailed. For me you nailed a key point. My 19' 500 EXC-F in stock form has way way way more power than my skills can handle. With that said, the fueling on the FI is so so in stock form. Rideable but not perfect. A few little niggles in certain gears, flameouts, hard starts and inconsistent throttle response is not what a 45+HP FI bike should be so i upgraded the ECU to fix that.
Well said. An ECU is the premium option for sure, a Dobeck EJK / JD tuner also is a great option for a guy wanting to correct the fueling for less benjamins
@@TACOMOTOCO I would love to see actual dyno comparisons between all of the ECUs including stock XCF-W. Oh, and the TPS hack, lol. So many units are sold but so little hard evidence...it makes me just want to stay stock. If I'm forced to be an uninformed customer then I don't want anything. I want hard data and I know some guys test bikes on the dyno so why all of the secrecy? I keep coming back to, it must be a way to sell more expensive ECUs, why else would there be such a lack of data/comparisons?
great review....
I got the 2020 500xcf-w for 8800 plus tax was under 11k so went with it try to make a race bike out of it with the new pipe and vortex ecu and race tech suspension upgrade. I like the xcw for the racing I do around here.
Mike, did you remove the coned screen inside of the stock pipe?
The main reason to remove evap emissions components is the engine vents and cools better. It might not be a measurable difference on a dyno, but there is more air flow around the motor and intake.
Good point - take those performance robbing items off and unleash the Beast !
*KTM #1*
Does this bike have catalict converter on the mid pipe thanks for the post happy trails
Great video 👍 exc-f way to go then
Dynojet has a O2 sensor in their efi tool
On a 2020 KTM 500 XCF-W, if I wanted to add a Fastway spark arrestor endcap to stock muffler, remove the intake reed assembly and charcoal canister setup, what would you recommend for minimum fuel management system setup, to make the bike run correct fuel wise without extra bells and whistles? Be bullet-proof out in the wild.
I’m trying to decide on the 350 or the 690R. Anything I should be thinking about?
For those of us that reside in states where it is simple to make the XCW street legal, the only choice is the XCW. With the EXC, not only is it $400 additional over the XCW, one has to change tires out immediately if they want to ride in sand as the stock TKC80's on the EXC are terrible in loose sand. Not only that, the EXC is 5 pounds heavier. All I have to do in my state to make the XCW street legal is add a Hi/Lo headlight switch, brake light switch, a double-take mirror, and a bicycle horn, easy peasy, license plate on the back, go anywhere I want with the license plate and ORV sticker. However, my question is this; if I were to take my plated 500 XCW out west to ride in UTAH or California, would they issue me a riding permit or not???????????????/
Shouldn’t be a problem. Just have a spark arrester in and ride safe here
Very Nice! You have nice Bikes! I've got the VORTEX on my 18 500 and it takes the bike to another level. Glad you don't have to take all that garbage off like you used to. An Orange frame would have been nice. Suspension is WAY Too soft but some Factory WP front and rear fixes that. Can't wait to see your final build.
i know I am kinda off topic but do anyone know a good place to watch new tv shows online ?
@Royal Onyx flixportal
@Kye Terrance thanks, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I appreciate it!!
@Royal Onyx no problem :)
Does the does the XCF-W have a wider transmission? Is that what the W stands for?
Didn't hear that mentioned in the video
Mike I have a 2020 EXC. You recommend removing the O2 sensor. Can you elaborate on the advantage of doing so. Also shud know I have a Vortex ECU.
The vortex doesn’t use the o2 sensor . Only advantage is looks and save some weight
Nice.
I didn't see a thermostat on that one, I thought with FI they would have one even if offroad only. Don't see any reason to remove the O2 sensor or reeds if not changing the ecu to GET or Vortex.
Nice
I have a new 500 that got unplugged.. my JD jetting is working but very interested in your experiments with GET &Vortex systems. Please let us know. I put in a velocity stack tube in the intake after pulling the reeds, Q4 pipe and block off kit. Thanks
He's got a super detailed video on this debunking myths about these bikes and what actually works. Id check it out if you plan on modding your bike, it'll save you alot of time and money in the end. Theres alot of stuff on the market for these bikes that aren't necessarily bad, but just not the most effective or useful way (like the velocity tube) and he goes into that.
Taco bud,do you guys have a top knotch set up recipe for forks hard riding enduro pilot on a ktm1090r this things shit on high speed compression hits Yea it's being revised but it ant taking what I serve it
I bought the 2020 Six Days EXC bike and I have been patiently waiting for FMF to release their new slip on. I think the new bike is much too quiet though I also don't want to be so loud it's annoying.
The stock fueling is better on the XCF W: good enough to enjoy without modification. The exhaust can is quiet but flows well with no outlet screen. The suspension is firmer but not too harsh. This is basically KTM’s best trail bike. It comes with both a radiator fan and a skid plate, finally. The engine is not a revver, like the 350 and 450, but tuned for strong low and mid range. Most guys will be really happy with this bike with only a change of tires to suit local conditions and springs to suit. Racers will look elsewhere, this is a deluxe play bike. I love mine.
I got 2 of the '21 500 XCF-Ws for my son and I and they are really nice. Re-sprung for our weight, added some protection here and there are away we go. We aren't racing every weekend and these have plenty of power for what we do and where we go.
It does not have the SAS or the total exhaust restrictions of the EXC.
Just sold my 2013 XCW and bought a 2021 XCW. Map 2 feels just like my 2013 and it ripped. Plus sicass min light kit and I tagged it right from dealer, so not sure where you coming from
The black throttle cam plate that came in KTM goodie bag with map 2 rips, stock. No hiccups, no flameouts, no noise, no gearing problems, killer tires. You guys selling parts need to get a night job, cause I ain’t buying it.
Wonder if you can get the Lexx for a 2022 350 EXC,,,???
Slavens said to remove the reed cage. What do you think?
Weird, here In Portugal that's the exact same bike but with a light switch and horn on the handlebars. No reeds on the airbus though. I rode a 17 and it ripped!!!!
Thanks for the video, but the kikstarter? : )
The vapor smog is ridiculous I spill more gas filling up my truck! 😂
My question is can I get an EXC and then add the map switch and TC? I think that is my main sticking point for a 350.
No. And believe me the factory TC system isn’t impressive and the map differences are not worth the effort. We have GET ECU’s with fantastic maps and real data-driven traction control. So much better than the factory set up
I have a 2020 xcf-w 500 with FMF on it ! And the mapping is richer and produces better power than the excf
@ktmkev I started the bike and let it run at idle for 5 minutes then shut it off for 5 minutes and when I restarted the bike I gave it a few high rev's . This process was so the ECM could learn the new air flow and adjust the fueling . My bike has not popped or crackled at all from cold to operating temp or through the RPM range on Accel or deceleration . Hope this helps and you have the same success as I did !
@ktmkev I feel the same way about not wanting to damage a 10k+ bike I will be adding a new ECM from vortex to my bike and removing all the emissions because this is not going to be a street bike it's going to be a fire breathing trail straightener !! Lol
Motor idamann.....😍😍😍😍
I have not taken my JD tuner out of the box yet. Did it work.
Did it work? Not sure I follow
Internet rumour was that the 2020-21 XCF-W's were going to be setup like the old ones without all the emissions crap but California said no go. So now we are stuck with this version. Sucks!!
In California, Go with the EXC. You will have an infinite number of more riding areas than if you do not have a street legal bike. In a state which is constantly trying to restrict off roading and OHV area's you'll understand what I mean once they are gone.
From my understanding, this is a legal green sticker bike from the factory? Legal for use on public lands? Am I wrong here? It’s a little confusing.
If so, then the main reason would be that it isn’t going to be registered for highway use.
Idk about most states but here, it’s less hastle to register an OHV and a little cheaper. And you don’t have to maintain a MC endorsement on your drivers license.
I’m looking to get one of these over the New 450 XCF-W or a 500 EXC.
Why?
It’s easy to put a plate on this in Michigan and we do not need blinkers.
And for a dual purpose bike to connect trails I don’t want a bunch of junk on it.
Id rather have a stroked engine with a little more torque for forgiveness over the 450.
This is a nice looking bike. They should have sold a non green sticker uncorked version of it with full power so we don’t have to spend money on getting the motor to run correctly. That’s the only issue with it.
Their a good bike dirt or other wise boys
Doesn’t the XCW have different transmission gears? I thought the W stood for wide ratio trans
Same exact tranny as the EXCF
@@TACOMOTOCO Thanks for the reply!
2020 XCF-W is $1500 cheaper at this point and I'll be replacing both the headlight and taillight even if I got the EXC-F, that's why I went with it.
Does it come with road legal title 🤔
@@CumminsTurbo4 Dirt bikes can be registered for street use in Texas as long as it passes inspection, which includes requirements for various lights, mirror and horn. It's pretty lax in practice.
👌👍👍
Is there a difference in suspension between the XCF-W and the EXC?
Yes. exc is slightly softer.
that's one awful looking muffler 🤮
Offset I’d get it because it’s the best one for staying quiet in the trails with a quick change of the tip for an off-road only race exhaust
Are they any good or just ugly as F - even with end cap, I'm calling red headed step kid on that muff.
I thinks it's a draw. Buy the XCF and build it up, assuming that a tag matters to you, and you're in a state where you are able to due that, or get the EXC and strip it down. EXC will be easier to sell once you're done with it, and it's 50 state legal. That bikes wiring sure is nice compared to my 2018 500 EXC.
Well said

Emissions on a dirt bike is beyond stupid!!!
Not if you want it street legal !!!!!!!!!!
@@mixalis6168 that's part of the point!! the fact that you have to have emissions at all, to be street legal or otherwise. On a one cylinder engine, what a joke!
@@12thman99 -- Yup. Dirtbikes -- both offroad and street legal combined -- put out about 0.0000000000000000001% of the engine exhaust in the U.S., and the EPA and CalEPA both act like we're going to destroy the planet if our bikes aren't leaned-out and choked-up beyond all reason. It's frigging stupid. It's the extremist, absolutist, pseudo-environmentalist mentality at work.
Nice bike. Check out bestbualsportbikes.com he’s got a fantastic kit to make these bikes run significantly better!
Thanks. You mean a Dobeck EJK and an end cap? We’re looking at a GET ECU and a Pro Moto Billet end cap to put this bike at to top of power mountian
HoboMoped
Nope on my 2020 500 xcf-w I put his get ecu fuel programmer on and high flow 90 tank fitting, fuel rail, fuel filter, intake tubes, exhaust manifold and fmf exhaust etc to take the power to the top of the mountain 😂
Nice mods. Yes, with that BDSB kit you have the Dobeck EJK fuel tuner and an open flow end cap, and that’s a nice little piggy back fuel tuner for sure . That same device is also sold by JD Jetting as the Power Surge, FMF Power Programmer, Polaris Big Box Tuner and a ton of others.
Adding fuel to a bike w a piggy back will def up the performance. Adding fuel AND ignition w an ECU is game changing.
Glad you’re happy w your bike. The braaaaaap is the goal!
HoboMoped thanks I love the new xcf-w. Yes everyone is familiar with the dobeck EJK tuner and we didn’t use it for this build. For this bike we wanted to get the best performance results and real traction control so we choose to run the GET ECU! It’s like a different bike from stoke now. Incredible performance difference. Enjoy you videos, keep it up.
Intake reeds are for Chicks
That is a ugly exhaust can, leave the OEM on, it hurts my eyes looking a brand new bike then mess about cans, use oem until it bends, then mend!
Hey man, it‘s AKRAPOVIC and not AKROPOVIC! 😂 And btw it‘s spelled AKRAPOVITCH...
That's one ugly silencer
One ugly pipe.
Thanks for the info 👍
