Honda TRX250X 250EX Upgrade Project for the Trail

  • The most essential modifications for Honda’s venerable 250X or 250EX
    Honda’s TRX250X, formerly known as the TRX250EX, is a t nimble handling, peppy running, sporty looking machine that’s great at getting new riders hooked on the fun ATVing. It’s reliability allows it to be handed down in families again and again adding a lot to its value. One of the best things about it is that iIt’’s a machine that younger riders can afford to save up for and purchase.
    Like any other sport, new riders tend to improve at the fastest rate in the beginning. In motor sports, even recreational ones, this often results in a desire for upgrades and performance parts. Based on our review of the 2016 250X and our time spent riding the machine since, we put together an upgraded version of the 250X and 250EX looking to improve it in every way while covering some absolute essentials.
    With a few hours of installation time and a modest amount of money, we made our 250X a tougher, safer, and more stable ATV with peppier power and, in our overall opinion, increased its overall appeal. This combination of upgrades work well as a whole or you could pick and choose the upgrades that fit your needs best. This ATV is all about having fun, and we think our hopped up 250X delivers more of it.

    everyone is so distracted now a days with big numbers that they forget how much fun you can have a little, almost forgotten, 250X....i am 100% sure that most of the trail riders (wannabe racers) with 650, 800 and 1000cc bike would be having a lot more fun in one of these...i say that by personal experience...after falling into this black-hole of HP and displacement increase in the ATV Industrie, riding again a TRX400X just opened my mind to "go back to the roots"...i can only imagine how much fun this little tuned up 250 is...it must be a blast to ride!

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  Před 6 lety +13

      Pe Peroni it is a lot of fun. And we couldn't agree more. A 1000cc ATV maybe four times the displacement but it's not nearly twice as much fun. A couple of buddies on 250X could have a lot more fun than one guy by himself on a 1000. Mini enthusiasts and the industry have both forgotten how much fun basic affordable ATVs can be

      Pe Peroni I couldn't agree more. I sold my 2001 Honda 250EX some years back. Wanted the money to pay for some work on a project car with my dad and wanted to get something faster eventually. I later purchased a 1985 Honda CR500R last year. My step dad still has the 2004 250EX he bought years ago for my step brother to ride with us when I still had my 250EX and my step dad was regularly riding his 300EX. In the past few weeks we got the 250EX going again and I forgot how much fun that machine was. The short gears mean I can click through 5th gear in my driveway. It's so light and easy to toss around. It makes me miss mine. However, I am glad to have something with more power. If I ever bought another 250EX/X I'd probably go with the newer X model so I could have the sport clutch and do some mods.

    These upgrades are awesome! And those 250s are incredible, I got a brand new 2012 250trxex and I was 7 at the time I got it, that thing is still going, never rebuilt, completely stock except a new bumper we made because the other one was trashed and so we could mount a led light on and some tires. That bike has brought me through Tennessee mountains, Utah deserts, and Indiana’s stripper pits. When I’m talking mountains, I mean brimstone, windrock, royal blue, interlake, north Cumberland, and Hatfield McCoy, and more. The only thing I ever broke was the bumper and a ball joint fell out, a couple brake lights, and obviously replacing the bearings and brakes periodically. Can’t say enough about this thing, it’s invincible, it’s agile, it’s a beast.

      @@Brian-nu6wg This past October, my brother and I with some friends went to the Hetfield McCoy Trails in W.V. The 250 I speak of is my sister-in-law's. My brother and his friends were riding Razor turbo 4 seaters, and a Yz1000 utv or what ever it was. Now those were hard to hang with because there suspension is way better than a quads. I did hang with them though. One time I passed all 3 and stayed in the lead just messing around on a slight incline and some curves. It was a sneak attack so I already had the top end on them for that moment. We were mudding, climb black diamond hills which isn't allowed with 2 wheel drive, but what a thrill. I did feel beat up pretty goo by the second day because I was riding at 80% effort to hang with them. I never have to ride that hard with other quads. It's just a fun nimble ATV. Most quads have a faster top end speed. Acceleration is average to above average. Wheel base is shorter so the chances of whacking trees in the wooded trails is smaller. I have a banshee, cr125r, had a crf450r, rode raptors, and ds650's, but every time my brother unloads the 250 from the enclosed trailer, everyone laughs and asks if I'm really riding that. The Ricochet skid plates will bolt up fine to your machine although you will have to do some minor trimming of the chassis skid plate were it wraps up behind the front bumper. It took us about 5 minutes with a rotary saw to trim the edges off a bit. Their skin plates are stout. We'd say it would be worth it. Yeah feel free to hit us back with any questions.

Most times cdi boxes are a waste but for some reason onthe 250x they are suppose to get some decent gains especially up top. • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  Před 5 lety +6

      Typically we pick out modifications based upon need. We didn't really have an issue with the level of traction the stock tires provided. Frankly, we would be concerned that an aftermarket Tire could increase traction making the machine harder to break loose and slide. Secondly, some tires might increase rotating Mass. Not a big deal on a larger displacement machine but we were looking to increase acceleration not potentially further tax the engine. We're not saying there's no reason to switch out the tires or that you couldn't benefit from doing it with the Right Tires. For us, the stock tires just didn't present a real issue. We hope this helps satisfy your curiosity. Ask away if you have any further questions.

      @@ATVonDemand Thanks for the response. I was more referring about going to a 20 inch instead of a 22 stock size to gain stability and maybe a lil bit more acceleration. @ATVonDemand  Před 2 lety

      Pardon me, we don't have the machine in front of us right now to measure. Is that going to make your front end wider than your back end? Adding wheel spacers at all will increase steering effort somewhat. Is the wider wheel spacer or more offset wheel you use the more it will increase steering effort. Having the front end front end wider than the back will further further increase steering effort. We hope this helps. Please set us back if you have any further questions.

    • @ATVonDemand

      We work with Renthal on a number of projects. They make great products. We used the Flexx bars on the 250X to help make up for the suspensions lack of plushness although finding a bend of handlebar that's comfortable will improve your performance as a rider. Finding the correct bend will be a bigger deal than the brand you buy, especially on a recreation machine like the 250X/EX. I personally like a straighter bar as it gets my elbows up but its personal preference.

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  Před 6 lety +2

      Jason Cas absolutely. When we ordered the wheel spacers for this project, durablue asked us if we wanted to go with 1.5 inch wheel spacers front and 2.5 inch wheel spacers rear. We opted to go with 1.5 inch wheel spacers all the way around for two reasons. First, we wanted to maintain the same difference in width front and rear as stock, with the machine being 3in wider overall. The other reason we did not go with 2.5 inch wheel spacers in the rear is because we were concerned about the additional Leverage making the stock axial easier to bend. Two and a half inch wheel spacers would provide increase leverage over 1.5 inch wheel spacers and having the rear wheel sticking out further in the front made us a little concerned about snagging trees. If we wanted the back in more than 3 in wider we would consider going with durablue Eliminator axle for the 250X EX which is both wider and stronger than stock. If you have anymore questions feel free to have us back. Thanks for watching.

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  Před 5 lety

      Duncan Racing has a jet kit for the Honda 250X that has a new pilot and Main Jet that they developed for their exhaust. Our bet is that it would work very well with any aftermarket exhaust and have the proper pilot jet. We believe that Honda has gone to a leaner pilot jet over the years. We went up the number of sizes that Duncan Racing used to go up when they originally developed there kit a long time ago. On newer model machines like ours, we're pretty sure you have to go up a couple more sizes from stock, since stock is now apparently leaner. Rocky Mountain ATV is the main distributor for Tusk products. We would contact them and see if they will sell you a set of nets for your nerf bars. We do not sell products. We only do reviews. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to head us back.

One of the best choices might be a Honda 400EX vs Suzuki Z400 if you can find one at a reasonable price. Try to find something with a stock engine. We will have the full list of parts prices and manufacturer links on our website tomorrow morning. the exhaust system will give you more mid to top-end acceleration but you won't gain much in the way of overall top speed you'll just reach it more quickly. the only way you will gain top speed on the 250EX or X is to add taller tires although it will detract from handling.
