- Documentaries like Netflix's Seaspiracy highlight many of the destructive practices of the global fishing industry, but are there sustainable alternatives to the industrial model? In this film, Fishing for the Future, we explore an inspiring new model created by Gravity Fishing in Aotearoa New Zealand that provides a small-scale, replicable, and sustainable alternative to industrial commercial fishing.
In many countries there’s a common belief that small-scale fishing is no longer a financially viable option, but Gravity Fishing is supporting a family and employees while adhering to a deep ethical understanding of how to operate on the seas respectfully and sustainably. And now they’re rolling out a model to enable others to do the same. We’re excited to share this story of the future of fishing and we hope you’ll be as inspired by it as we are!

If you wanna talk sustainability put a bell collar on your cats if they're outdoors, they devastate the native bird and other small animal populations. Putting a bell on them helps warn birds.

@@Yomanchamcru Bird tape. Buy some put it on your windows. Also look up Tom Scott's video on how New Zealand is combating their rat problems. You don't need cats for it.

Great work again! What really struck a chord with me was in the beginning when he said that this new model brings four times the price. The conclusion was "so, we can harvest one fourth" (as opposed to "we can make four times as much money"). That's the new direction right there. A new story spelled downshifting. Beautiful!

This is absolutely amazing work. I am wondering if these people are working with minimum or maximum size limits? I am assuming Maximum size but I'd be interested to know.
Because there is this stupid thing we do as western people where we harvest the big fish and are forced by law to throw the little fish back. The issue is that it isn't taking the full ecological context into account at all.
Fish lay eggs to reproduce. And not just fish but crustaceans, squid and shellfish too. Small fish might only produce a small amount of eggs, but the oldest fish will produce millions upon millions of eggs. Taking out only the big fish is therefore robbing the ecosystem of the 'breeding population'.
Its akin to cutting down a lemontree to harvest your lemons. You can only do that so many times before you start running out of lemons.
It also puts a selection pressure on the species for becoming smaller in size in general. If you get to stay alive and thus breed for longer if you are a small fish, then small fish tend to be more successful in the ecosystem. We are effectively breeding ourselves smaller and smaller fish.

I enjoyed this. It is a great way to stop so much fish waste but I still struggle with eating an animal. I still feel bad about it. I'm not having a go at people who do but it's just how I feel.

There is no such thing as sustainable fishing with billions of humans eating fish.
If you love the environment ,please try not to use machine boat and oil driven vehicles. That can damage to clean water. Learn how to fish with traditional ways from Maoi.
