Ready to give your tastebuds a treat? Try these smoky flavored Plant Based Vegan Puerto Rican Beans! The flavor is good enough to just eat it by itself but you could also eat this over rice. Beans from one of my favorite companies Rancho Gordo was the inspiration for this crazy delicious recipe. If you are a thrill seeker, use fresh jalapeños instead of pickled ones!

As a Puerto Rican chef, you did great. For some unsolicited tips, give the veggies at the beginning time for them to sweat in a higher temp to the point where they start to get color, then add Spanish green Olives and spices then give a a couple of stirs, after that add the liquid to deglaze any flavor in the pot, bring to boil, then add a fresh culantro (Not cilantro), add the rest of the ingredients, then simmer till done. We PRicans add more or less potatoes depending if it's too salty(Cause we cook often with cured salted meats that have different salt contents, like ham hocks, smoked hams, thick bacon in the veggies stage) and we use bell peppers and sweet peppers. Hope you like it guys.
My recommendation would be to cut the vegetables smaller. I'm Puerto Rican and have NEVER had jalapenos in any beans.
Thanks for these tips! What if we want to make beans with a bit more of a broth?
Perfect recipe, we are not going for being like some faction of the population, we are going for what is the healthiest, yet tastiest, not the tastiest-healthiest first...no animal products of flavors in it-that defeats the purpose of being long term healthy preventing cancers...soooo, this is thee perfect recipe for the long term health, yet taste-perfection.....may add 'shrooms though, and'or tofu (pure organic)
My mom made this forever at least once a week, (I personally don't eat any meats) mom cooked pigs feet in the sauce. Now I say yuck, but growing up it was a food staple.. LOL dad was from Puerto Rico, but I swear I never remember there being potatoes in it.. Tia Letty cooked it many times also, never had potatoes either.. Feel like I missed out now.
I lived in NJ for 5 years and was immersed in Puerto Rican cooking. The vegetarian option of the PR beans they prepared were AMAZING. No one ever added jalapenos and it was more of a soupy consistency.
In January 2020 I'm going to transition to vegan vegitarian meals and this is gonna be a staple. Thank you. You just made things feel a lot easier for me.
I am Puerto Rican and our main dish for beans are Habichuelas aka red kidneybeans, also as a Puerto Rican we add sofrito to everything which is a paste mixture of bell peppers, garlic, onions, tomatoes and cilantro that you puree. We also add a can of tomato sauce. But I'm open to change so I will try this recipe lol
I just love all your recipes.
Been plant base 4years and I never cook before so your recipes are so helpful and 😋 delishhhhhh.... Thank you. ❗💙
I made these beans and they were fantastic! I actually used sweet potatoes instead of regular and it came out wonderful. I served it with a side of coleslaw and pickled onions. Yum!

Great idea 👍
@@wholefoodplantbasedcookingshow My favorite addition is diced butternut squash. I love the sweetness it gives the beans/sauce. Thank you for sharing a Puerto Rican dish with your audience!
I made this and it was delicious!!!! Ordered your cookbook last night!!!! Thank you!
The Whole Foods Plant Based universe sent you to me.
YEAH! Boricua! Thank you/gracias!.. so nice to see a Puerto Rican Recipe base plant recipe, saludos/greetings from New York!
Greetings from Puerto Rico! Thanks for the tip on using water instead of oil. 👍🏼
Yadira Laguerre Rest in peace beautiful woman and youtuber! ❤️🙏🏼
Once again, an absolutely fantastic dish. I used 1/2 the amounts and this will make two large meals with some brown rice. I grew up in a town on Long Island that had a large Puerto Rican community. This could easily have slipped in among a number of dishes I have had there. Thanks again for all your help!
Appreciate the length of your videos! So many CZcamsrs vids are to long. Great receipe!
Made this last night for my lunch the rest of the week. OMG!!!! This is now my new favorite. Easy to make and taste amazing. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this with us all.
Your channel is so calming and I love your positivity! Thanks for the recipe 🧡
Down here in Oz it’s almost Winter and this meal just warmed our hearts! Thanks for another great recipe!👍
Made this yesterday. It's very flavorful and filling. I used a fresh serrano pepper just because I prefer it over jalapeno and added fresh cilantro after cooking. Great recipe. Thanks again.
I would add green olives stuffed with pimento, cilantro and a dash of liquid smoke to substitute for the ham. Puerto Ricans like pink beans but pinto is a good substitute.
Looks good! 🌞 Thank you. 🌷
Olives, pimento, and cilantro is a MUST, take it from a Puertorriqueña! 😊
Check the video. There is no ham in this version. It's vegan.
metamud I meant for the ham that the Puerto Ricans usually add to bean in the non vegan recipes
Margarite Olmos has
Do you have your on rice?? We always did and used Kidney beans
Sooooooooooooooooo, good, making it again tonight........
Love this recipe. Thanks.
Made this tpday! Added spinach and topped with some salsa. SO GOOD!!!!
I’m looking forward to trying this. It looks good and inexpensive as well as healthy.
This was great I would suggest using sofrito too ! I use it almost on everything!!!
Sofrito is definitely an acquired taste.
That just looks plain delicious!! Thanks!!
Yummy! I’m going to try this but in my slow cooker! Thank you 😊
Hard to find but culantro also called recao is what takes it to a whole other level it's similar to cilantro but way stronger and fragile like basil but it's everything..if you look up how to make sofrito the recipes will come up on how to use the recao in your sofrito which would be the base for your beans and a ton of more recipes. Oh and your kitchen will smell amazing
Uma Hasan
Thank you for the tip 🤗
Going to make this for Easter!

Just gave it a try and I love it thank you! Also decided to learn how to make homemade tomato paste (in the process) for this recipe what a win, win! And I shared the video with my sister can't wait til she gives it a whim!!!!
This looks delicious! I'll be making it soon. Thank you!
I love all of your recipes. I thank you for taking the time to put them together. I think the new intro song is nice, but I absolutely LOVED the old intro. It always got me pepped up for cooking and trying new things. Lol
This looks amazing!! 100% making this asap!!
And, once again, making this tonight....great anytime, but really nice in cooler weather..........love doing an Organic potato, to leave the peel on it........I add shrooms and carrots........
Yummy! Excellent recipe.
Wow....that looks so delish!
Just made it!:):) thank you!!
Looks so yummy, thanks for sharing your recipe!
Looks yummy 😍
great cuisine :)
Awesome
Oh goodie! I was just wondering when I would see a new 'Whole Food Plant Based Cooking Show' recipe!!! Definitely trying this one for myself and my "almost-vegan-husband"! :)
Looks so delicious!! Thank you for sharing! This would be good served over cauliflower "rice"😊
I like your new little title song and of course as always beautiful recipe! Thank you
Wow, that'll feed everybody.
I made these beans yesterday and they were very good. I took them to work today and my non-vegan coworkers all liked them and some even asked for the recipe.
That's great! =)
Great video
Well, today I made this recipe along with your Oatmeal raisin cookies. Both turned out fantastic. I'm thinking a big pan of vegan cornbread would go perfect with this. Or, a nice salad with vegan ranch dressing. Thank you.
I love your videos
Hi Jill,
I love your cooking demos and I, too, been following Dr Joel Fuhrman long time. Guess what, I just went to Rancho Gordo beans in Napa yesterday ( my sons first day spring break here in Santa Rosa, Ca). Curious to know, what are your top 2 or 3 favorite beans from them?
Please keep up your wonderful attitude and joy on these cooking episodes. You’re adorable and easy to do cooking I love to watch, then make.
Ann Peters. Ps. I love North Carolina, too!
Looking forward to trying this. How did you precook the beans? Did you soak them before cooking? Also, one of your earlier recipes used pickled jalapeños, I couldn’t find them anywhere. Thanks for this one skillet meal idea.
Hi there love your show what is that cooker (top) you are using, sorry you have prob told us but have to ask I like that vs using the stove all the time! Thank you so very much!
Hi Jill,I love your show! I’m wondering what is the electric stove topBurner you are using and if you would recommend it. We are movingto a small studio apartment that doesn’t have a stove top.I would appreciate any information you could give me.Thanks, Patty
Veganism is great but hunger.. I am getting into feeding others too. 45 mill Americans, 13 mill kids are food insecure. Veganism, studies say, fights hunger. Encouraging everyone on channels to look into ways of taking part. ❤️
What induction burner are you using? Thanks!
Wow! Looks Delicious🤤 I am in my 1st week of my Vegan Journey and seeing this is really a big help so Thank you for this Amazing Recipe🌱 btw i wanna ask how long it will take on cooking the beans?
I've got pinto beans in my pressure cooker now so I can make this tonight. It looks delish!
Monica Walker
Fantastic 🤗
I have to report back- it was awesome! I was out of coriander and bay leaves but followed the rest. All my kids liked it and my 7 year old son said he could eat 10 bowls! That's a big win! Thanks for the great recipe!
I’m just getting home from work & thinking...hmm what should I make for dinner 🤔 So glad I came on here & saw your video!! Making this tonight, thanks!
Yadi’s Journey
That’s great 😃
It looks very flavorful but here in Puerto Rico we do not use jalapeno and you need more water, recao not bay leaf the onions and peppers are more like a pure and it blends with the water and for color we like it really red and we use Sazon.
Yadi’s Journey how to lose weight on the starch solution
I love your show, this is definitely not a hate comment but that doesn't look like any Puerto rican beans I've ever had. My dad's family are Puerto Rican and we are from south Jersey. But they do look yummy and Ima give them a try
Shared ya on Facebook!

Thank you 👍
Mmmmmm! Does your husband and family know how lucky they are?? If not... Call me!! Lol - Definitely will male this!!
What do you serve it with? Over rice? over salad? With tortillas? or do you eat it like a stew?
Ooooo I So want to try this! How long should you cook the beans before you add them to the pot?
If they are canned then you can just add them to the pot but if they are dry beans then they need to be fully cooked.
😋 YUM
These look wonderful. I'm wondering what you pair them with? Is this the entire meal in a bowl, or do you put something with it?
We usually have a side salad or some cooked greens with it 👍
@@wholefoodplantbasedcookingshow Thank you!
For me a little heat goes a long way. I cooked some rice and beans about a month ago using some chipotle powder I purchased from eBay. It was so hot I finally had to ditch the beans. They were some Rancho Gordo beans, and it broke my heart to have to throw them out, but they were ridiculously hot. Last week I used Sate spice from Penzey's in my beans (delicious). I will have to try your version. It seemed like a nice round of spice. I love smoked paprika!!!
sometimes when i make something to spicy i will add lime or lemon which cuts the spicyness, add more grains (ex plain white rice or more beans) to level out the spicyness, or if it's a soup try adding coconut milk or peanut butter :)
You could've cooked more beans and mixed them. Not too long ago I made noodles & veggies with green curry that turned out way too hot so I just made more noodles and added more coconut milk and mixed them in.
do you have the recipe for puerto rican rice with gandules? ❤🌱🌱🌱
I don’t
Were the beans pre-cooked, or soaked overnight? 20 minutes seems like a short time to cook beans.
Use a can of beans already cooked
Did you cook the beans before hand?
Yes
What is the healthiest rice for vegan recipes?
Sindy Frischman
my personal favorite is black rice but if you can’t find that, then wild rice 🤗
You need to put more water in them they seem very dry Puerto Rican beans are saucy...
I can’t see the link to the full recipe..

Making it right now! This looks absolutely amazing. My whole kitchen smells so good as well. Will report back on the taste! :D
Edit: Hmm, it took a bit longer to boil the potatoes until they were tender (about 35 minutes) and I'm definitely gonna up the spices way more in the future. Great smell but a relatively mild taste!
Did you pre-soak the beans?
I usually soak them overnight, pour off the water, refill with fresh water and cook till soft.
Thank you, that is what I figured but you did not say that you had done that.
Although I'm sure your recipe probably tastes good, I have to tell you that this is definitely not a Puerto Rican dish. Puerto Ricans never use jalapeno peppers in their cuisine. What we frequently add is pique which is made with habanero peppers and vinegar and is used as a condiment to the meal. Another important ingredient that we use is an herb called recao. This herb is very flavorful it's a type of culantro. Typically the peppers, onions and recao among other ingredients are made into what we call sofrito and is used as the base of the beans. when I started to transition to a plant-based lifestyle I began omitting the meat products that typically go into Puerto Rican dishes such as tocino which is back fat and other oils.
Could you make this in an Instant Pot?
Liz Nigh
I haven’t tried it, sorry but I think it would work. The potatoes might stick to the bottom a bit.
@@wholefoodplantbasedcookingshow Thanks
Are the potatoes raw or pre-cooked?
Raw
Good day. Jill. Not sure what the best way to contact you to ask what Instant Pot are you using. I think I want to buy the same you. by the way you are the most important person in my life even more important than my doctor who can only point me in the right direction. You go the last step further and sit me down to teach me how to make it. Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Laird
That is so sweet 😊
Thus is the Instant Pot that I have

You might want to add the part where you throw the bay leaf away when everything is cooked to the website.
salt?
No need for salt when you use variety of spices.
Why are the skins only good on organic potatoes and not non-organic? I eat the skins on my non-organic potatoes.
SupSarahxx
Here is an article about it🤗
www.google.com/amp/s/livingmaxwell.com/health-risks-conventional-potatoes/amp
Pinto beans instead of black beans, yummy for the tummy.
Puertorricans we use pink beans instead.
I don't know any Puerto Ricans that use jalapenos for their beans including myself 😂😂
Ummm...... Garlic?
Lifecare Counseling The garlic went in with the onions at the beginning. I think she said three chopped cloves.
Ahh, okay I didn't catch that.
not organic, i would suggest not using it at all, ha ha
no but actually yes
and just a thot on water too
i add bits at a time keep good attention to the dish on the stove and add as needed. instead of keeping excess water in at all. reason being the nutrients go to the water and out of the food
therefore less water makes the nutrients reabsorb in food as water diffuses into the food. unless the goal is making congee to drink after or along side supper. just a thought as i was watching your presentation. more of a did you know or fyi thing
not judging how much water you used. did you think of garam masala in this one i think i would choose that over cumin. i really like youre ideas. be well
Dd
You need sofrito!! Vinegar, olives and pumpkin etc
Puerto Rican beans? I don’t think so!
No VEGETABLE broth?? In a vegan household? Got to be kidding. 😔🧐🤨😛
Gerald Brienza
Right?😳😬
The Whole Food Plant Based Cooking Show : haha, you’re great. Keep up the good work!!
Sorry that is NOT Puerto Rican. Might be good but definitely not a Puerto Rican recipe. Change the name
lulu turull stfu. There are Puerto Rican's that say this is very close especially since it's vegan.
lulu turull also how entitled do you have to feel to demand that someone changes the title of their own video? TBH you seem like a douche.
You're only insulting yourself.
lulu turull clearly you're a moron too
Not sure why you titled this "Puerto Rican Beans lol?" Your ingredients were more definitely more Mexican. I am Puerto Rican and have never seen Puerto Rican beans made this way vegan or not. . . it is not even sautéed. Where's the liquid? The main point of the Puerto Rican beans is the "juice" which your recipe or at least final results show none. Again, why call this Puerto Rican Beans? Perhaps Spanish bean recipe would be more suited.
A vegan kitchen with no vegetable broth...,,?
