THIS could've been TAG Heuer's Moonswatch moment 🚀 Formula 1 KITH re-issue

  • TAG Heuer has just re-issued the original Moonswatch - its classic Formula One design from 1986, which went on to become an affordable icon of the watch world.
But with its partnership with KITH and a questionable pricing strategy, has TAG Heuer missed out on the chance of some Moonswatch-sized sales?

The first time I ever heard of 'Kith' was the other day when CZcams showed me a thumbnail of Hodinkee talking watches with the founder. He was wearing sunglasses inside and looked like a typical Brooklyn trust fund 'entrepreneur' who was probably 40 but dressed like he was 17, so I didn't watch it.

as a fan of streetwear and watches I love this collab. This isn't for everyone and I understand the older crowd who doesn't understand Ronnie or Kith but for the world of watches this is great because this exposes other people into watches that wouldn't normally be interested. Ronnie worked his way up from the bottom and regardless of his knowledge of watches, it's a great story and you should appreciate his love for collecting items and his way of life. Not everyone who is into watches will have the same background or the same love for watches as others and that's okay. It's a new day, new money and a new generation. Nothing wrong with that imo

Some Watch brands seem to think it’s still 2021 and that people are stupid enough to pay silly money for absolutely anything. The Party is well and truly over. In the 2 to four thousand and a bit beyond price range it’s going to be very hard, certainly in England you will have to offer substantial discounts to temp customers. @Escapement24  Před měsícem +1

Starting with your second point Chris, I completely agree that value - like beauty - is in the eye of the beholder. If you love this and can afford one, then why not?
Your first point is really the one I'm making in the vid - with the original F1 TH are perhaps one of the only brands to have a ready-made product to rival the success of the MoonSwatch and make non-enthusiasts aspire to higher tier products from the brand. It's colorful, fun, a design with mass market appeal and TH is a brand with as wide a global reach as Omega, if not more.
But at £1,350 it's too much of a considered purchase to sell in MoonSwatch quantities.

    • @Escapement24
      @Escapement24  Před měsícem +1

It won't be hard for them to sell the limited quantities they've produced, even at the £1,350 price level. The comment about them blowing it is twofold:
      1. The reinterpretation of the design doesn't live up to my hopes for it (subjective, I know) nor does the price.
      2. I think they had the opportunity to make this a non-limited release and sell similar volumes to the Moonswatch, if they'd only made it more affordable or priced at a level that's less of a considered purchase. I appreciate it might not be their strategy here, but LVMH Group exists to make profit and I think they've missed an opportunity to sell significantly higher volumes by making it limited and too expensive for most people to justify. I can only assume they've priced it at this level to a) build in a retail margin for KITH and b) to avoid making their other F1 models look like they're overpriced

    A few things.
    1. It's not realistic to quote an 'after inflation' price. My 1993 Seamaster was £500 new. The latest model is 1000% more. My 2015 Submariner is up 55% in 8.5 years. Also, by the 90s the F1 was over £200 RRP.
    2. UK buyers can only get the TAG exclusives for £1350. For the others you're looking at £1600 from the Kith EU store.
    3. This release is not about making money by mass production. There are less than 5000 of these worldwide, and guaranteed to be an instant sell out. This is generating hype for TAG, which will hopefully lead to a TAG-only release. However, you'll be looking at £800-1000.
    4. The Moonwatch is completely different. TAG have taken their original model and reproduced it with enhanced materials. Swatch took a steel icon with a mechanical movement and made a plastic quartz pos. Bringing the Omega brand down to their level. This is not what has happened with the F1.

Don't disagree with your points, aside from the first one - maybe it didn't translate well but I was giving a comparison allowing for inflation. How watch RRPs have risen above inflation is a whole different discussion for another day.
Also agree that TAG will undoubtedly sell out of the limited quantities being made, and that their strategy is most likely not to attempt to be another MoonSwatch.
The point I'm trying to make is that they had the potential to release something that could have been as successful as the MoonSwatch, but IMO they've either deliberately or inadvertently passed up this opportunity.

@@Escapement24 I think because the release is being driven by Kith (there's a back story here) it's deliberate. Most Kith collabs are highly limited with a price premium (case in point the 2021 G-Shock, $400 for a $150 watch). I hope TAG see the popularity of this and do a 'vanilla' reissue. Although as previously mentioned I don't see it being less than £800ish. With decent vintage pieces costing upwards of £600, getting a brand new limited edition watch with full warranty for £1350 seems reasonable (assuming you can actually get one of the TAG exclusives).

@FieldDE I think you're spot on with the pricing - if they do a non-limited release it won't be less than £800

…the TH or KH is analogous with MoonSwatch, bringing Tag to the masses who care nothing about watches but are driven by TV and perceived exclusivity…Kith ? What, is that a Star Trek spin-off alien spieces ? Neither F1 nor Tag need the diluting effect of the Kith co-branding…

Not an overstatement to say I feel genuinely let down by TH with this release so it's back to searching on eBay!

Could've been better with an auto movement without the Kith or Tag branding...Just the " Heuer " branding on it .
