How to remove grass or sod effectively without renting a sod cutting machine or special tools.DIY

  • I tried a few hacks for removing grass. Here is what I found out and what worked best for me.
    I tried removing grass with a homemade sod cutting setup, I tried to remove grass with a saw, I tried to remove grass with a chainsaw. What worked best was removing grass with a yard fork. There is a lesson about removing grass, if you are looking for a shortcut to clear grass for a patio, there isn't one. Harsh reality, it's hard work no matter how you look at it.

    Been using a shovel for years, and been cutting with a saw as well. This does it easier than any way Ive found so far. You have to do a little work after the removal because this does not leave it as neat as other methods but good lord, the time you save with this method. Thanks Anthony

      Rent a sod cutting machine, not a sod "ripper", I never heard of that before. You can adjust how deep you want your sod cutter to cut, cut the sod, then go back and roll it up. It will look just like rolls of sod you buy from the store. Be forewarned, the roll of sod you cut will be heavy. It also leaves the soil below nice and flat.

    I’ve done this, but after a few years it becomes more of a time/efficiency thing more than a strong back/hard work kinda thing. Work smarter not harder is the idea when you know seeds have to get into the ground. This’ll be my first year renting a sod cutter machine so I’ll get to compare in the next few weeks.

    I had a few questions. I'm looking to remove some grass in my patio area (small area), but I know nothing about landscaping. Would I just remove the top grass (sod) like this, then tamp it down, put landscaping fabric over it, put landscaping staples into it, and then cover the top of that with gravel? I keep looking for answers, but no one has been very helpful yet in their responses to me. Also, sometimes when it rains it kind of floods a couple inches, so is it okay to use the landscaping fabric then? Thanks for any help.

    To rent a sod cutter is only $95 in my area. You could do all the grass in that camera shot in an hour or two at the most! You’d save yourself from possible back injury and dehydration, you’d cleanly cut the grass away from the soil too which is much better for the grass if transplanting. And how important is your time you’d get back with friends family or making money on other jobs? There is no reason to do a large area like this manually.

    • @heatheresteubing-fisher9729
      @heatheresteubing-fisher9729 Před 8 měsíci +3

      He clearly said unless you have a strong back, the sod cutter isn't worth it. I've watched several videos on how to use one and it looks like a fight. Even the people demonstrating them say they're not easy to use.

    • @fastone371
      @fastone371 Před měsícem

      @@heatheresteubing-fisher9729 Then they don't understand how to use the sod cutter. The cutting is done by the machine, the machine is self propelled. The hardest job is picking up all of the rolls of sod you cut because they are heavy unless you roll them very small. Using a sod cutter is equivalent to using a snowblower. I have used shovels, pitchforks, grub axes, etc and sod cutters are by far the easiest.

      It doesn't work well, at least not the edger I have. You can use it to cut and something else to lift but edgers are meant for cleaning up the edges of garden beds that already exist and doesn't get deep enough. It doesn't work anywhere near as well or as fast as a nice sharp spade with a long handle for cutting and a pitch fork for getting under the grass and lifting.
