  • Hell is real, but it might not look the way you think.
An eternally burning fire where wicked nonbelievers are tormented forever-this is the image of hell that has long been attached to the Christian religion. But the Bible describes nothing of the sort.
Gary Black explains why hell is not a place of eternal torment and how the Christian world came to that mistaken idea.

Jesus called him by name, Lazarus. It wasn't a parable, people are in hell now. The Bible says that he'll will give up the dead to be judged, meaning that there are people burning there now. A soul does not naturally die like flesh man dies. A soul has to be destroyed. That happens at the second death.

@@peterjennen99 Here are some verses showing the soul sleeps.
"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun." Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 from the King James Version (KJV).
"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest." Ecclesiastes 9:10 (KJV).
"His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish." Psalms 146:4 (KJV).
      Here are your verses.
"And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose," Matthew 27:52 (KJV).
There's nothing wrong with that verse. The saints had died and their souls were sleeping and unaware of anything. Their bodies were resurrected with their then awake soul just like what will happen when Christ comes the second time. One of the meanings of "soul" is man's mental processes. God keeps a memory of a person's mental processes when the person dies in a sleeping state and restores it to a new body in an awake state at the resurrection.
"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water." 1 Peter 3:18-20 (KJV).
There is no problem with that passage. Jesus was put to death in a flesh and blood body. At His resurrection he was quickened (brought to life) by the Spirit (Holy Spirit) and it was "by" the Holy Spirit that he had preached to the "spirits" (you could also say souls because in this context "spirit" means mental processes) of wicked people who had died in the flood.
"For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit." 1 Peter 4:6 (KJV).
Once again, no problem. There are MANY people whose bodies are dead but whose spirits (mental processes) are sleeping who were preached to while their bodies were alive and their spirit (or soul) was awake. God keeps a memory of each person's mental processes and restores those processes to a body in an awake state at the resurrection.
Here's one more text for you.
"And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;" 2 Petter 2:5 (KJV).
Noah was a preacher of righteousness and the Holy Spirit preached through him to the wicked people who had died in the flood. It was through the Holy Spirit that Christ spoke to them through Noah.

He's not a JW even though JWs also teach soul sleep.
Here is what you need to do.
      1. Use the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible.
      2. Get an English dictionary like Noah Webster's 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language.
      3. Get a concordance. If you make a search containing the words "king james pure bible search" you will find an app that's extremely useful that I've downloaded on a variety of Macs and Windows machines and, last I looked, it's FREE!
In order to understand Hell you also need to understand death first. Here are some things to understand.
      1. "Soul" and "spirit" in the KJV have different meanings depending on the context. One of their meanings is the intangible element of a human being we would call mental processes or intelligence. When the body does, God keeps a memory of all that constituted a persons mental process in a SLEEPING state until the resurrection. Depending on the context in which it's used, a "soul" can also mean a person.
      2. The word "hell" can mean the grave or the hot place depending on the context in which the word is used. Only God can destroy the soul, meaning the record of a person's conscious thoughts, in the hot place after the resurrection of the wicked and their final judgment.
      3. After the resurrection of the wicked, they are judged and then destroyed forever in hell or as it's also called the lake of fire. They don't burn forever.

@waynechason5585 it's not a "place" at all; therefore certainly not literal. In the gospels where Jesus is alleged to speak of it....he never does! He says "hades" and sometimes He says "Gehenna"... however according to the kjv translators and you; He says "hell". When the book of James says "hell" once.. James actually said "Gehenna". When Peter spoke of false "Tartarus"; the translators said "hell". Referring it to what they believe to be a a "true" place while translating a false (place) word. You are supposed to know better! Hell is indeed false doctrine. Hell belief...is an insult and and a dishonor to God and conflicts with the gospel. Jesus death on the cross was sufficient for thr forgiveness of all sin. "Belief" plays no role in our sin being forgiven. Beief only plays a role....in that we belief our sins have been forgiven..... forgiveness is a done deal happened before we believed. Our belief gives us assistance

The concept of a soul being cast into some place to burn for eternity because they didn't accept Jesus ass their messiah was invented by the early church as a means to scare people into accepting their new pagan religion. This concept can not be found anywhere in the original Hebrew Tanach (Bible) or Judaism. The concept of a soul existing for eternity in some heaven is a pagan idea and can not be found in the Hebrew Tanach or Judaism. I was a very devote Christian growing up but when I started reaching adulthood and started questioning what I was taught to believe, I started looking for believable answers. Like if everyone who lived before Jesus, including Avraham, Isaac, Moses and the Hebrew Prophets, had their souls cast into an eternal hell because he hadn't been born yet. Also if someone born after Jesus but never heard of him also had their souls cast into hell. Most of the ministers and priest said yes. Others said they didn't know. I was told most of my questions were a matter of faith and could not be proven. The more I studied Christianity the more unanswerable questions I had. Such as what kind of a loving god could cast one of his creation's souls into some eternal hell? To me a god like that is evil and should not be loved or worshipped. By the time I was twenty I had completely rejected Christianity and its Dogma. But I could not accept there is no Creator. A few years later I stumbled upon what the original Hebrew Bible and Judaism taught. It was quite an awakening for me. The more I studied Judaism the more things made sense. When I reached 28 I decided to convert and went through an Orthodox conversion. So coming from my background I know move about Christianity and Judaism than the average Christian. What Heaven and hell really look like czcams.com/video/krZjoGM1iSM/video.html The soul and the afterlife czcams.com/video/YzFUXKk2B4I/video.html Are Christians going to Hell? czcams.com/video/-sCcuwE1gy0/video.html Most people accept what they are taught because it is all they have been exposed to in their cultures. Who should understand who and what G-d is, the original Hebrew Scriptures, or anything concerning the Jewish Moshiach and Judaism than the People G-d revealed himself to in person gathered together in one place and taught who and what he wanted in his own voice and through his Prophets?
