Pioneers are detroit techno and chicago house. Terms of what got electronic music to be popular are really various, and I`m sure that it`s not only trance but the hype around whole culture, plus that euro dance stuff that was banging in the radios in the 90`s (of course epic trance tunes were included, but fortunately not usually, so the actual experience was reserved for those who went to the festivals)

you`re right, but that`s not trance by definition. 60`s and 70`s is still something called musique concrete, and it`s Jean Michelle Jarr who started putting some rythms in that music, together with for example Kraftwerk guys, and many more of them. it wasn`t trance, it was just melodic, rythmic, atmospheric music.
for example, Gatecrasher in 90's (mid to late as I remember, plus Cream etc) and not the first of many in the UK. When did it happen in US?
